The 2026 Bendigo Cup brings together established stayers, Melbourne Cup hopefuls and a few runners looking to rescue their spring campaigns. Wednesday’s $500,000 Group 3 over 2400m has attracted 15 acceptors, with Kings Valley heading the betting after two strong runs against elite company.
With the track rated Soft 7 at the time of writing, and an improving forecast, the final surface could have a major say.

Bendigo Cup form guide and leading contenders
Kings Valley – $2.60 win / $1.33 place
The Ciaron Maher-trained stayer has the strongest recent form in the race. He was fifth in the Caulfield Cup, only about two and a half lengths from the winner, before charging home for second behind Juja Kibo in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup, run at Flemington on Cox Plate Day. Both efforts were against stronger opposition than he faces here. The concerns are the quick four-day turnaround and barrier 12, which could leave Ethan Brown settling well back. At 57kg, however, Kings Valley looks the runner to beat if he has recovered from Saturday’s exertions.
So You Are – $5.50 win / $2.05 place
So You Are has been one of the season’s most progressive stayers, winning three consecutive races before her recent step into stronger company. Her Geelong Cup run was below her best, but she gets an excellent chance to find a position from barrier one with Rachel King aboard. The 58.5kg is no gift, and she needs to bounce back quickly, but she has the tactical versatility to make the favourite work.
Suntora – $14.00 win / $3.50 place
Nick Ryan’s mare nearly stole the Herbert Power Stakes, finishing a close second over 2400m. That gives her a relevant staying reference and 55kg is manageable. The challenge is barrier 13: Daniel Stackhouse may have to spend energy crossing or settle farther back than ideal. She is one of the better each-way alternatives if the track retains some give.
See That Storm – $12.00 win / $3.10 place
The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained gelding was third in the JRA Cup at his latest start and is weighted on 54.5kg. Craig Williams takes the ride from barrier eight, providing a reasonable opportunity to find cover. He has fewer questions around a rapid back-up than some rivals and deserves consideration at double-figure odds.
Soulcombe – $13.00 win / $3.30 place
The former Melbourne Cup placegetter has an added incentive to run well: a top-three finish could help him satisfy the ballot conditions for another crack at the Cup. His recent sixth in the Geelong Cup was better than the bare finishing position suggests, but he is an older horse returning from injury and still needs to prove he can finish his races off. Nash Rawiller rides from barrier four.
Litzdeel – $7.50 win / $2.30 place
Litzdeel is now prominent in the market after her fifth in the Geelong Cup. With just 54.5kg, Damian Lane booked and barrier nine, she has the profile to improve at this distance and is our preferred value inclusion behind the leading pair.
The Euphrates and Berkeley Square
The Euphrates was well supported in the Geelong Cup but faded to tenth and now carries 60kg. He could improve if allowed to dictate, although that weight makes him difficult to trust. Berkeley Square finished fourth at Geelong and can run into the placings if Declan Bates negotiates the outside gate, but barrier 15 makes his task harder.
Likely speed and race shape
The Euphrates is a natural candidate to go forward, with So You Are ideally placed to save ground from the inside draw. Starford and several wide-drawn runners face early decisions. Kings Valley is likely to be ridden patiently from barrier 12, hoping the leaders maintain a genuine tempo. If the race becomes a sprint from the 600m, the favourite may have plenty of ground to make up; a truly run 2400m would suit his strong closing style.
Bendigo Cup betting tips
Best bet: (6) Kings Valley – $2.60 win / $1.33 place. The clear favourite has strong recent staying form, but the quick back-up and barrier 12 remain risks at this short quote.
Main danger: (4) So You Are – $5.50 win / $2.05 place. Barrier one and a favourable tactical position make her the principal danger.
Value chance: (8) Litzdeel – $7.50 win / $2.30 place. A light weight and Damian Lane are positives, and her market position has strengthened compared with our initial assessment.
Next best: (10) See That Storm – $12.00 win / $3.10 place. Competitive recent form and Craig Williams aboard give him each-way claims.
