2026 King Charles III Stakes Tips, Odds & Betting Preview

2026 King Charles III Stakes tips and betting preview for Saturday 17 October at Royal Randwick. Full field, barriers, form analysis and our leading selections for the Group 1 mile.

Randwick Racing

The $5 million Group 1 King Charles III Stakes at Royal Randwick on Saturday, October 17, shapes as one of the most compelling races of the spring. Chris Waller’s brilliant Autumn Glow faces a very different challenge from her recent assignments, with Pride Of Jenni’s aggressive front-running style and two-time defending champion Ceolwulf adding intrigue to the 1609-metre contest.

King Charles III Stakes preview

Autumn Glow deserves favouritism, but this is not a race to assess on winning streaks alone. Pride Of Jenni can turn a mile into a sustained test of speed and stamina, while Ceolwulf has already won this event twice. The tactical battle is likely to determine whether the favourite can extend her outstanding record.

Autumn Glow

Autumn Glow has won 13 of her 14 starts, with her only defeat a third placing. She resumed with victory in the Group 1 Winx Stakes over 1400m before beating stablemate Aeliana in the 1600m 7 Stakes at Randwick on September 19. Ceolwulf finished behind her that day.

Waller’s stable opted for a racecourse gallop rather than another trial ahead of Saturday, reporting that she had come through the work well. She has the turn of foot to put away elite rivals, but her challenge will be to reproduce it after potentially having to chase a searching tempo.

Pride Of Jenni

The Ciaron Maher-trained mare brings the most obvious tactical wildcard. She completed a third successive Feehan Stakes victory at Caulfield on September 27, defeating Treasurethe Moment by one and a half lengths after dictating terms from the front.

Her spectacular six-length Queen Elizabeth Stakes win at Randwick in 2024 remains a reminder of how dangerous she can be when allowed to establish a break. Declan Bates knows her racing style intimately. The question is whether she can open a sufficient advantage before Autumn Glow begins her run.

Ceolwulf

Ceolwulf is bidding for a third straight King Charles III Stakes win. Joe Pride’s runner was second in the Epsom Handicap earlier this month and has shown he can compete at the top level over a mile. He finished behind Autumn Glow in the 7 Stakes, so he needs to find something extra to turn that form around, but his record in this particular race is impossible to ignore.

God’s Window, Just Folk and Militarize

God’s Window ($31.00) backs up from his Epsom Handicap success but faces a different test at weight-for-age. Just Folk ($61.00) and Militarize ($61.00) complete the six-runner field. Both would need to produce significant improvement to upset the market leaders.

How the King Charles III Stakes could unfold

Pride Of Jenni is the key to the speed map. Her connections rarely try to restrain her natural front-running style, and she can stretch the field well before the home turn. The others must decide whether to stay close enough to challenge without burning too much energy early.

Autumn Glow has shown she can quicken sharply, but she will need to be within striking distance at the right time. If the favourite gets a clear run and the leader begins to tire, her acceleration should be decisive. If Pride Of Jenni steals several lengths cheaply, the finish could become much more interesting.

Ceolwulf is well suited to a genuine test over the mile and could benefit if the two headline mares put pressure on one another. The confirmed barriers give Ceolwulf the inside gate (1), God’s Window barrier 2, Just Folk 3, Autumn Glow 4, Pride Of Jenni 5 and Militarize 6. Pride Of Jenni should be able to push forward from five, while Autumn Glow and James McDonald will need to time their challenge carefully.

King Charles III Stakes tips

Top selection: Autumn Glow – $1.45 win / $1.05 place. The brilliant mare is clearly the most likely winner on exposed form. James McDonald rides from barrier four, and her acceleration should be a major weapon in the small field. The question is value: $1.45 leaves little margin for an interrupted run or an exceptional performance from a rival.

Main danger: Ceolwulf – $3.50 win / $1.30 place. The two-time defending champion has barrier one and Chad Schofield aboard. His excellent record in this race and recent Epsom second give him a legitimate chance if he can stay close enough to the favourite. He is the obvious alternative at a bigger win price.

Value watch: Pride Of Jenni – $8.00 win / $2.30 place. Declan Bates rides from barrier five. Her bold front-running style could turn the race into a tactical contest, particularly if she establishes a sizeable lead without excessive pressure. At $8, she is a more speculative proposition but has a clear winning scenario.

Next best: God’s Window – $31.00 win / $8.25 place. The Epsom winner draws barrier two but meets stronger weight-for-age opposition. A place or exotic inclusion is easier to support than a confident win selection.

Top selections

  1. (5) Autumn Glow – $1.45 win / $1.05 place

Selections are provisional pending the final track rating and scratchings. At $1.45, Autumn Glow can be the most likely winner without necessarily being the best value bet.
