Belmont Racing Tips: Wednesday, August 25th

A four horse 3YO race over 1700m to kick off the day.

(2) Via Monte hasn’t won a race yet but brings good form to the race through the likes of Trix Of The Trade and The Front Bar. That would be enough to be very competitive in this.

(1) Celevacci won on debut following some promising trials. Big query is the form out of the race he won though – there wasn’t a great deal behind him.

(4) Feuding interestingly steps straight up to 1700m after contesting two 1200m races to kick off his career. Not unusual for this stable to do something like that.

(3) Dented Romance would need to improve sharply.

Competitive little field here but you can definitely find worse $61 bets than (5) My Laina here. This is a mare that has a great second up record and defeated Weaponson second up last preparation. That form is well and truly good enough for this race and if she improves off her first up run, she can run a cheeky race at enormous odds. The firm ground will help.

(6) Sassy Trader drops in grade and is the well-backed favourite but hasn’t won since he was a two-year-old so that’s the knock.

(2) Prince Devoutly gets the nose roll off and the blinkers back on, with a break since his last run. The stable are in flying form so he has to be a chance here.

(8) Agent Kensington has won her past two and now steps up in grade, but it’s hard to knock her winning form.

No surprise to see there has been a flip in the market here.

Happy to be with the well-backed Durrant debutant (11) Sparkling Blue who comes into this off a winning trial. The stable seem to have been churning after winner after winner on debut recently and this can be another one.

(10) Restful is likely to be a fair way back from the barrier draw on debut for Pike/Peters. The stable are in hot form though, so no surprise to see her go close.

(7) Ocean Aura is another horse on debut for South-West trainer Paul Roberts. Expecting a good showing.

(5) Valenza next best.

Siding with another Durrant debutant here in (9) Henchard, who comes into this off consecutive wins at the trials. Pike goes on for race day and if he can overcome the tricky draw, I’m sure he will be hard to beat.

(8) Simple Logic draws the inside barrier and drops heavily in grade, back to a maiden from a 3YO Staurday race. He was only beaten 2.8L by The Front Bar after sitting three-wide throughout. Makes him very hard to beat here.

(2) Kelly’s Hero and (10) I’m Believeable are two other runners from the Durrant stable that can be included.

Tricky race.

(1) Double Spice drops in grade from Saturday company back to a Class 3 on a Wednesday. He was only 1.3L behind Notorious One last start which is one of the stronger form references in WA at the moment.

(8) The Thunderess missed the start first up at Northam but gets a couple of positives today, with a firm track and Pike going on. She can be hard to catch but she does have the ability.

(3) Scorpion Stormz also drops out of Saturday grade back to a midweek race, and gets Chris Parnham booked for the ride.

(7) Blue Horse bolted in last start but that was a heavy track. Back onto a firm surface today is some query.

(5) Type Won was only narrowly edged out last start. Pike goes on today and with the rail out 18m, should be tough to run down again.

I do think there’s a few at odds that can win this though.

(1) Katona is yet to place in five starts when first up and comes into this without a trial, so might need the run, but he did come good at the end of last prep. Ran fur consecutive placings, with the last of those coming in Saturday grade.

(2) Powerful isn’t a wet tracker. I’m convinced he needs good ground to run well and he gets that for the first time since placing at Northam five runs ago.

(6) Vicinity broke through for a first win a few starts back but hasn’t had any luck since then. Convinced the horse is racing well.

(3) Somethingready is good enough but comes up with a tricky draw.

Happy to stick with (4) Special Picture who is now 2/2 this preparation after swooping home as our best value bet of the day last start. Both wins this time in have come over 1400m and she now steps up to 1700m third up. The only query is the return to a firm track but she looks a strong chance once again.

(1) What About Moi comes here on the quick backup after racing on Saturday. Has serious claims.

(3) Stocktaka is racing well and is knocking on the door for another win, while both (6) Night Session and (8) Twentythree Red can improve at big odds.

If we had a senior jockey booked for (9) Oceanzara I’d be backing it each way but the 4kg apprentice, who hasn’t ridden a winner yet, doesn’t fill me with confidence. He lost the steering controls last start when the horse came about 10 wide around the bend and stuck on well for 5th. Won well three starts ago and the firm ground is a positive today, as is the cutaway in the straight which should make it fairly simple for the jockey.

(2) General Grant is good enough but needs to improve on what he showed first up.

(11) Master Moore won second up last prep and wasn’t bad first up, while (1) The Republican and (10) Popcorn Tender have claims.
