Billy Bestford previews the Newcastle Gold Cup and has found a few good bets throughout the afternoon.

We make our way to Newcastle this Friday where the day is highlighted by the Newcastle Gold Cup. It’s a quality card of racing today so read on as we bring you the best horse racing tips to help you have a fill up before the weekend!

The track is in pristine condition as always, with it currently rated a Soft 6 and the rail in the true position. Good weather is expected in the lead up to race day so I wouldn’t be surprised to us racing on a good track at some stage.

Billy Bestford has cast his eye across the meeting so read on to find his best bets, betting strategy and race analysis.

Honestly thought (5) Conegliano was a good chance of knocking off the more fancied runners here and he’s a horse with a heap of potential for Annabel Neasham. Has had two wins on the bounce now and should have no issues rising slightly in trip 4th up today. He should find a good midfield position in running and give us a good sight late.

(4) Silhouette is a deserved favourite, with this being his easiest assignment of the prep. Was very good fresh in a strong bm72 before getting too far back 2nd up. Looks hard to beat in this grade.

(6) Akahata was very good behind the in-form Ita last start and that form continues to look better each week. Should be ready to fire 3rd up and gets in nice and light today.

I think (4) Capital Reign looks hard to beat here and is a horse who is trending in the right direction. Is a real speedster and should be able to find the front here and give nothing else a chance.

(6) Akasaki is the big query runner for mine. He absolutely loves this 900m dash and loves racing here at Newy. Won this race last year with a big weight and while we never saw much of his best throughout the prep, is a real strong fresh horse. Definetely have to have something on him.

Backing both these horses and confident we can get a result.

Cracking race this.

(4) Great News looks the best bet on the card for mine following two huge runs in defeat this prep. Had no right to finish as close as she did last start when caught wide the trip but draws much better today and will be ready to fire 3rd up. Loves racing here at Newcastle and I think she can turn the tables on More Prophets.

(2) More Prophets is flying and can’t knock her last two wins. She will be getting back again here and will be flying late but loses Jmac from both those wins and it could turn out to be a tough ride from Brodie Loy.

(3) Bring The Ransom was massive in that Mona Lisa splitting the above two horses and he’s even better now rising to 1400m.

(5) Mirra Vision knows how to find the line and is a winner from her only start at this track.

The feature race of the day comes up here and it is a high-quality field assembled. Looks to be some in form horses going head to head and we are in for a beauty.

(6) Harpo Marx is as tough as they come and is turning into one of the better stayers we’ve got going around in Sydney at the moment. Obviously not quite at that elite level but he’s honest and continually manages a way to find the win. Looks to get in relatively well here at the weights and I think Newcastle should suit his pattern very well. Massive chance to make it three straight wins.

(9) Criminal Code is another horse who’ll be suited by the big Newy track and has been racing in terrific form this prep. Worked home strongly to finish 2nd in the Wyong Cup and will appreciate 2400m now.

Can’t knock (3) Berdibek who has won two straight and has found his mojo in this provincial showcase races. Beginning to creep up in the weights now but was only getting stronger through the line in the Wyong Cup last start.

(5) Laure Me In looks a touch overs considering he’s beaten a few of these who are shorter than him this prep. Almost knocked of Purffect Deal over this trip two back and his best probably goes very close.

Billy Bestford

Billy has been an avid racing fan ever since he and a few mates started a punters club once they turned 18. Following the initial punters clubs, he was properly hooked after landing a nice collect on Admire Rakti in the 2014 Caulfield Cup and has had a soft spot for Japanese horses ever since. Is a massive fan of 'blinkers first time' and has been known to enjoy a 'Hail Mary' multi. Loves punting across metro Sydney and Melbourne every Saturday but isn't scared to venture West late in the day to find a Pikey special.
