2026 Moir Stakes Preview: Group 1 Sprinting Takes Centre Stage at Sandown
The Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival continues at Sandown this Saturday, September 5 2026, with the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) bringing together an intriguing mix of established stars and emerging sprinting talent.
There is a significant change to the Moir Stakes in 2026, with the race shifting away from its traditional home at Moonee Valley due to the redevelopment of The Valley. Instead, the $750,000 weight-for-age sprint will be run over the 1000m at Sandown Hillside.
That change of venue could have a major influence on the result. The Moir has traditionally been a high-pressure dash around the tight Moonee Valley circuit, whereas Sandown’s longer straight gives horses further back in the field considerably more opportunity to build momentum and challenge the leaders.

Natural Fling Heads the Market
Three-year-old filly Natural Fling has emerged as the horse to beat following an outstanding return to racing in the Group 3 Quezette Stakes at Caulfield.
The daughter of Home Affairs put four lengths on her rivals over 1100m that day and now takes the considerable step from racing against her own age and sex into an open Group 1.
What makes her particularly interesting is the weight scale.
Natural Fling carries just 50kg, giving her a substantial weight advantage over the older sprinters. The challenge comes from barrier 13, with Jamie Melham likely needing to use some of her early speed to find a position.
The market has nevertheless been prepared to forgive the outside draw, with Natural Fling around the $3.60-$4.00 mark in early betting.
Giga Kick Returns
The established star of the field is Giga Kick, who resumes for trainer Clayton Douglas with Mark Zahra aboard.
The former Everest winner clearly possesses the class to win a race of this quality and is one of five Group 1 winners in the field.
The question is whether 1000m is now his ideal distance.
Giga Kick is generally seen at his best when able to settle before producing his powerful finishing burst over slightly longer sprint trips. At Sandown, however, the long Hillside straight should give Zahra plenty of time to wind him up.
Drawn barrier nine, expect Giga Kick to be allowed to find his feet before attempting to overpower the field late.
Cavalry Girl Brings the Sandown Form
Few runners arrive in better form than Cavalry Girl.
The Tom Dabernig-trained mare has won three consecutive races and four of her past five, including an important victory in the Group 3 Carlyon Stakes over this exact Sandown 1000m course.
That is a valuable piece of form given the Moir’s relocation.
Cavalry Girl showed plenty of determination in the Carlyon, finding a run along the inside before finishing strongly to defeat Bazaball Rewarded.
She rises significantly in grade but comes into the race fit, in form and proven over the course and distance.
My Gladiola Could Be the Value
My Gladiola is another fascinating runner returning from a spell.
Her first-up record is excellent and she demonstrated that she belongs at this level when finishing second to Tentyris in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning over 1000m at Flemington earlier this year.
That performance is particularly relevant.
Like Sandown, the Flemington 1000m gives sprinters room to build through their gears rather than relying entirely on the ability to negotiate a tight circuit.
My Gladiola has also reportedly trialled strongly ahead of her return and barrier six should give Jamie Mott plenty of options.
At around double-figure odds in early markets, she shapes as one of the more interesting runners outside the favourites.
Rothfire Back for Another Moir
Veteran Queensland sprinter Rothfire returns for another shot at the Moir Stakes and has drawn ideally in barrier one.
Now a nine-year-old, Rothfire proved earlier this year that he remains capable of competing at the highest level by adding another Group 1 victory to his record.
He is also a genuine short-course sprinter, with four victories from 10 starts over 1000m.
His age means there are younger and potentially more progressive horses in Saturday’s field, but his experience, tactical speed and inside barrier give him the opportunity to be involved.
Other Moir Stakes Chances
Skybird is capable of producing an elite sprinting performance on her day and already owns a Group 1 victory. She also finished third in the TJ Smith Stakes during the autumn, although her form has not always been consistent.
Extragalactic resumes after being scratched from the Carlyon Stakes and remains one of the more lightly exposed runners in the field. Her recent jump-outs suggest she could be ready to run well fresh.
Point Barrow continues to progress through the sprinting ranks and gives Daniel Stackhouse an opportunity to claim a maiden Group 1 victory.
Geegees Mistruth and Ole Dancer add further Group 1 quality to a field containing five previous winners at the highest level.
Moir Stakes Speed Map
The speed should be genuine.
Natural Fling has drawn the outside barrier but possesses enough early speed to push forward, while Cavalry Girl is another runner capable of taking up a prominent position.
That could create an interesting tactical battle.
At Moonee Valley, horses giving away several lengths approaching the short home straight can quickly find themselves out of contention. Sandown is different.
The long Hillside straight should provide horses such as Giga Kick with considerably more opportunity to build into the race if the leaders overdo things early.
That makes the 2026 edition a particularly intriguing Moir Stakes from a betting perspective.

Natural Fling deserves favouritism following the manner of her first-up victory and she receives an enormous advantage under the weight-for-age scale. The outside barrier and significant rise in class, however, mean taking a short price is not without risk.
Giga Kick is the proven superstar and Sandown arguably suits his racing pattern better than the traditional Moonee Valley circuit, although the 1000m could leave him needing to produce his best late.
For punters searching for something at a bigger price, My Gladiola makes considerable appeal. Her first-up record and Lightning Stakes performance demonstrate that she can match elite sprinters over 1000m.
Cavalry Girl also has to be respected given her current winning streak and proven Sandown 1000m form.
