2026 Spring Champion Stakes tips for Randwick on 24 October. Final field, barriers, win odds and selections headed by Global Goal and value chance Wonka.

Randwick Racing

The Spring Champion Stakes is a major 2000-metre test for three-year-olds, often revealing which emerging gallopers are ready to graduate from promising spring form to genuine Group 1 class. The extra distance makes race tempo, settling ability and stamina more important than a flashy finishing burst over shorter trips.

Spring Champion Stakes runner analysis

Global Goal – $2.90

John Sargent’s Flight Stakes winner arrives with proven Group 1 form at Randwick. Dylan Gibbons rides from barrier three with 54.5kg, giving the filly a useful tactical position and a weight advantage over the colts and geldings. She must still prove herself at 2000m, but her strong finish over 1600m suggests the trip is within reach.

Proxima Dea – $5.50

David Payne’s unbeaten filly has won all four starts, most recently the 1800m Gloaming Stakes. She defeated Wonka and Scarole in a tight finish and looks suited to the rise in distance. Zac Lloyd rides at 54.5kg, but barrier nine is a complication in a field without an obvious abundance of early speed.

Scarole – $7.00

Ciaron Maher’s runner was third in the Gloaming Stakes, narrowly behind Proxima Dea and Wonka. He draws barrier four with Nash Rawiller, giving connections the option of a more positive ride. His price is attractive relative to the small margin separating those horses last time.

Wonka – $11.00

Wonka nearly defeated Proxima Dea in the Gloaming Stakes and draws barrier two for Jason Collett. He can race economically and is a credible each-way or exotic contender if he reproduces that performance over another 200m.

Diameter and the remaining contenders

Diameter ($17) won the Stutt Stakes before finishing sixth in the Caulfield Guineas and now tackles 2000m. Cormier ($9) could influence the tempo from barrier eight, while Stormy Marco ($8), Mindgames ($12) and Persian Wonder ($21) complete the field. Mindgames draws the inside barrier and may enjoy a ground-saving run.

Spring Champion Stakes speed map

Cormier is a potential leader, with Scarole and Diameter capable of settling close. Wonka can take advantage of barrier two and Global Goal should be able to secure cover from gate three. Proxima Dea’s outside draw presents Zac Lloyd with a decision: press forward and risk early work, or settle back and rely on the filly’s staying strength. If the tempo is slow, positioning could be decisive.

Spring Champion Stakes betting tips

Best bet: (8) Global Goal – $2.90 win. Her Group 1 Flight Stakes victory is the strongest recent form reference, and the favourable barrier three should allow Dylan Gibbons to position her closer to the speed. The extra 400m remains the question, but she is our most likely winner.

Value selection: (4) Wonka – $11.00 win. He was beaten only a short neck by Proxima Dea in the Gloaming Stakes and draws barrier two compared with her outside gate. That is a substantial price difference for two runners separated by so little last start. He looks capable of settling economically and finishing strongly.

Next best: (3) Scarole – $7.00 win. Also narrowly beaten in the Gloaming, Scarole can improve with a clean jump from barrier four. Nash Rawiller should have tactical options and he is a genuine winning contender.

Fourth selection: (9) Proxima Dea – $5.50 win. Four wins from four starts and proven form at 1800m demand respect. The concern is whether barrier nine forces Zac Lloyd to give away ground or make an early move at a relatively short price.

  2. (4) Wonka – $11.00
