The first on the program consists of a six-horse field, with the top weight (2) Golden Able lugging 68.5kgs. He is one of several horses yet to show much in any lead-up races. In fact, this may be the worst race at any track this year. The reality here is that working backwards, you can strike through the form of five of the runners.

The only one to show any potential in prior starts is the six-year old (6) Periscope, who has placed second in back-to-back races. Keep in mind, Periscope has not won yet after 15 starts, and the maiden win is well overdue. Today gets the tongue-tie on. You would need to be pretty keen to take the short odds ($1.40), but at the same time, there is nothing in this field that looks likely to upset him. I have mixed feelings about including this one, but it may add something to your multiples.

Top weighted runner (1) Viva Achiever comes to this after a previous win at Echuca, over the same distance and grade. Quite possibly could go on and win another one, but he does get the 71.5kgs today.

The one who does look most likely is (8) Rendelsham after placing second behind Kissinger last time out. Worth noting that Kissinger put 4 lengths on her, but he did also beat home Wentwood, who went on to win the St Arnaud Cup, and then run second in the Ararat Gold Cup (which she could have won if given the right run). Her overall form looks to be a level higher than the company here.

(6) Hierarchal is a jumper and best over further, but has shown some form second-up over this distance. He is the long-shot in this field, opening at $16 and crashing into $9.

This appears to be a race of two. (1) Corner Pocket was our on-top selection when going around at Ballarat last start, where he ran a pretty meritorious third place. Finds a similar field today, and should be going on with it. The good track is favourable, as is the slight increase in distance.

The only fly in the ointment could be (7) Turbofan, who ‘won’ a jump-out at Terang, but that was only against three other runners only (and they looked pretty ordinary). Happy to give him a race to see how he goes.

(4) Stigwood is in the mix for exotics, with two career places in five starts. Yendall sticks with him today.

Today could be the day for eighteen-time starter (2) Kardinia who has started to show some form in his last two races. The six year-old gelding has struggled to put a maiden away, placing only three times. Two starts back he was $151 and was unlucky not to win coming second to Ronniejay. We’re unfortunately not getting those odds today!

Last race he ran second to Grandma Gail at Warrnambool, the same race where we saw the race favourite (8) Sumusu arrive ninth. Based on that run, Kardinia has the favourite’s measure here today. Additionally, we’re getting each-way odds which will cover our win stake.
