2026 Champions Stakes Tips, Odds & Betting Preview

Flemington Group 1 2000m: full field, barriers, odds, contender analysis, speed map and our betting selections for Saturday 7 November 2026.

Champion Stakes

Cosmic Crusader has already beaten Aeliana twice this spring, but the $3 million Champions Stakes at Flemington on Saturday offers the mare a compelling chance to turn the tables. After chasing him home in the Turnbull Stakes and again in the Cox Plate, Aeliana now draws barrier four while her rival must negotiate the outside gate in an 11-horse field. Over 2000 metres at weight-for-age, that change in starting position could make all the difference.

There is more to the race than a rematch. Birdman split the pair in the Cox Plate and draws the inside, Sir Delius is looking to rebound from a below-par run, and Treasurethe Moment adds another intriguing element to the speed map. We assess where the main contenders can settle, whether Cosmic Crusader’s demanding spring campaign may finally catch up with him, and which runner offers the strongest bet at the available odds.

Betting Preview and Leading Contenders

Aeliana — well drawn to reverse the Cox Plate form

Aeliana was third in the Cox Plate after settling further back than ideal from a wide barrier and making a sustained move. She also finished third behind Cosmic Crusader in the Turnbull Stakes, so there is a clear form line to overturn. The difference this time is barrier four, which gives James McDonald a chance to save ground and position her closer to the speed. She receives 2kg from the male runners and appeals at $3.00, albeit without a huge margin for error.

Cosmic Crusader — the horse they must beat

Cosmic Crusader won the Turnbull Stakes and Cox Plate at Flemington this spring, with a Caulfield Cup fourth in between. The Andrea Leek-trained gelding has demonstrated both stamina and a strong finishing sprint at this track. He has beaten Aeliana twice and deserves enormous respect at $3.20. Barrier eleven is the concern: William Pike may need to go back or cover ground, and another taxing effort after a long campaign could leave him vulnerable late.

Birdman — the improving middle-distance threat

Birdman was runner-up in the Cox Plate, finishing between Cosmic Crusader and Aeliana. He has been improving through the year and draws barrier one with Ben Melham aboard. The inside gate can provide an economical run, although it also creates the possibility of needing luck to find clear air. At $5.50 he is an appealing alternative to the two market leaders.

Sir Delius — class with something to prove

Sir Delius was one of the spring’s most highly regarded middle-distance horses but finished sixth in the Cox Plate. Connections have indicated he may improve with that run, and his underlying class means he cannot be dismissed. Craig Williams rides from barrier seven. At $6.50 he needs to reproduce his better form rather than simply repeat his latest effort.

Omni Man, Sabaj and the rougher chances

Omni Man brings European staying credentials and finished third in the Geelong Cup, but this is a sharper 2000m Group 1 at weight-for-age and his $14.00 price reflects the class question. Sabaj won his latest start and is improving, though barrier ten and the leap in grade complicate his task. Treasurethe Moment has previously shown high-class ability but her recent form is below her best; at $21.00 she requires a clear turnaround.

Speed Map and Race Shape

Land Legend is capable of rolling forward, with Sir Delius and Treasurethe Moment also able to race prominently. Birdman can save ground from barrier one, while Aeliana should enjoy a better midfield or forward-of-midfield position from four. Cosmic Crusader’s wide draw is the tactical complication. A solid pace would give the late finishers a chance, but a moderate tempo could reward those closer to the speed.

Champions Stakes 2026 Tips and Selections

Selection Horse Win Odds
1 10. Aeliana $3.00
2 1. Cosmic Crusader $3.20
3 5. Birdman $5.50
4 3. Sir Delius $6.50

Our betting verdict: Aeliana at $3.00 is the win selection, narrowly ahead of Cosmic Crusader ($3.20). The barrier advantage and 2kg allowance are the key reasons to expect a different result from the Cox Plate. Birdman ($5.50) is the value alternative.
