The $10.2 million Group 1 Melbourne Cup returns to Flemington on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, for the 166th running of Australia’s most famous horse race. First contested in 1861, the 3200m handicap is one of the world’s great staying contests and the centrepiece of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. It is a unique test of endurance, tactical judgement and weight-carrying ability: even accomplished Group 1 horses can struggle to see out the final 400 metres of the famous two-mile journey.
The 2026 edition brings together an unusually deep field of Australian-trained stayers and international challengers. Ciaron Maher has a remarkable seven runners, headed by lightly raced Geelong Cup winner Point Of Law, while Irish trainer Joseph O’Brien saddles five, including Trustyourinstinct and last year’s runner-up Goodie Two Shoes. The barrier draw has added another layer of intrigue: Point Of Law landed gate nine, Trustyourinstinct drew 18 and James J Braddock faces the outside gate. Recent rain and the possibility of more showers mean the final track rating could be every bit as important as the betting market.

Melbourne Cup 2026 form analysis and leading chances
(20) Point Of Law – $6.50 win
Point Of Law is the favourite for good reason. The lightly raced four-year-old made an immediate impact in Australia when winning the Group 3 Geelong Cup over 2400m at his first start for Ciaron Maher, running a fast time and finishing strongly under 55kg. His earlier European form includes a Bahrain Trophy victory over 2615m and a creditable Royal Ascot run over 2846m, providing a more substantial staying foundation than the Geelong performance alone might suggest. He rises to 3200m for the first time but carries just 53kg and has drawn beautifully in barrier nine for Ethan Brown. His upside is enormous; the concern is whether a horse with so little racing experience can handle the pressure of a full-field Melbourne Cup. The most likely winner, but not a certainty at $6.50.
(16) So You Are – $12.00 win
Few runners arrive in better form than Bjorn Baker’s stayer, who has won four straight. He followed an ATC St Leger victory over 2600m on soft ground with a tough Bendigo Cup win over 2400m, carrying 58.5kg. Those performances suggest he has both the stamina base and the resilience needed for a Melbourne Cup. He drops to 54kg, Rachel King rides, and barrier seven gives him an excellent chance to settle within striking distance. The question is whether he has the same top-end class as the leading internationals. At $12, though, his proven Australian form and draw make him one of the better value bets.
(2) Trustyourinstinct – $8.00 win
Joseph O’Brien’s Irish contender has a strong European staying profile, winning the Curragh Cup over 2816m before finishing fourth in the Group 1 Irish St Leger at the same distance. He has already proved he can sustain his form against quality stayers over long trips, a major advantage in this field. James McDonald is a significant booking, but 57kg and barrier 18 are considerable obstacles. He may be forced to cover ground or settle further back than ideal. A serious winning chance on ability, although the market offers little compensation for his difficult draw.
(11) Juja Kibo – $11.00 win
Juja Kibo is one of the most convincing locally prepared staying prospects. He won the Group 2 Metropolitan at Randwick over 2400m before following up in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Cup over 2500m at Flemington on Cox Plate Day. That latest win came against Mr Monaco, and the ability to keep finding under pressure is exactly what is needed at 3200m. Sam Clipperton rides from barrier 14, a workable but not ideal draw. He has never raced over two miles, yet his recent preparation has been designed to build stamina. A leading contender at $11.
(22) Mr Monaco – $23.00 win
Mr Monaco offers an appealing roughie profile. He won the Bart Cummings over 2520m at Flemington on rain-affected ground and then finished a close third behind Juja Kibo in the Moonee Valley Cup, carrying more weight than he will here. He now gets just 52.5kg and has demonstrated that Flemington’s long straight suits him. Barrier 16 and the apprentice booking of Jabez Johnstone introduce uncertainty, but the $23 quote compensates for some of that risk. One of the best each-way and exotic runners in the field.
(24) Shockletz – $10.00 win
The daughter of 2009 Melbourne Cup winner Shocking carries the bottom weight of just 51kg and has proven Flemington form. She won the Archer Stakes to secure a Cup berth and was a fast-finishing second in the Tesio Stakes at her latest start. Her sixth in the Herbert Power Stakes over 2400m was also respectable. The 3200m is untested, and there is an important jockey concern after Harry Coffey suffered a fall on Derby Day, with his fitness for Tuesday uncertain. She is a genuine lightweight threat, but any late rider change must be assessed before betting.
(12) Hopewell Rock – $11.00 win
George Boughey’s English raider has attracted market attention and arrives with a European staying profile that deserves respect. Zac Lloyd rides from barrier 15. He has enough tactical speed to find a position but will need luck to avoid covering ground, and adapting to Australian race tempo is another unknown. He has claims, though we prefer horses with recent local form at similar prices.
(4) Middle Earth – $14.00 win
Last year’s Melbourne Cup third-placegetter has the advantage of proven performance over the exact distance. Mark Zahra, a multiple Cup-winning rider, jumps from barrier one, and Ciaron Maher has kept the horse ticking over through a demanding spring campaign. His recent Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate efforts have been modest, but those shorter trips may not have been ideal. The inside draw could save considerable ground. A dangerous runner to dismiss in exotics, particularly if the race becomes a genuine staying test.
(1) Sons And Lovers – $21.00 win
The topweight brings strong European credentials, including victory in the Group 2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil over 2800m and a second in the Kilternan Stakes. Barrier three is an excellent draw for Dylan Browne McMonagle, but the 57.5kg impost is demanding and he has yet to tackle 3200m in Australia. He looks more interesting for the placings than as a primary win bet.
(6) Enfjaar – $21.00 win
Roger Varian’s runner produced a strong Australian debut when third in the Caulfield Cup over 2400m, finishing just a length from Kingswood. That is an excellent form reference and barrier eight is a plus. Ray Dawson retains the ride, but the key uncertainty is stamina: his strongest performances have come at shorter trips, and 3200m is a considerable step into the unknown. At $21 he is a tempting class-based roughie.
(10) Goodie Two Shoes – $26.00 win
Last year’s runner-up knows exactly what the Melbourne Cup demands and is one of the field’s proven two-mile performers. However, she has been below her best in the Herbert Power and Geelong Cup, and barrier 19 makes the task harder. Joseph O’Brien’s preparation may be designed to have her peaking on Tuesday, but at $26 she requires a leap of faith based on her recent Australian runs.
(18) James J Braddock – $17.00 win
The Joseph O’Brien-trained colt brings high-class European three-year-old form and gets a light 53.5kg. Craig Williams is an excellent booking, but barrier 24 is the worst possible draw and the horse has limited exposed form beyond 2400m. The wide gate may force him to go back and attempt a sweeping run. He has the ability to win if everything falls into place, but the price is less attractive after accounting for his map difficulty.
(15) Zahrann – $26.00 win
Zahrann worked home respectably when sixth in the Caulfield Cup and has drawn barrier 11, traditionally a favourable Melbourne Cup starting position. Ben Melham rides for Ciaron Maher. His biggest concern is the jump to 3200m, particularly if the track retains moisture. He is a place or exotic contender rather than one of our preferred win bets.
(23) Zakouma – $26.00 win
His latest Crystal Mile run is best ignored because he was sharply back in distance from a staying preparation. Earlier he finished within three lengths in the Herbert Power Stakes over 2400m. He now returns to a proper staying trip with only 52kg and William Pike aboard from barrier ten. He is capable of improving significantly and deserves consideration for wider trifectas and first fours.
Other runners
Knight’s Choice ($41) won the 2024 Cup but carries more weight and has been below his best this spring. Vauban ($61) has the staying background but faces another difficult Cup assignment from barrier 22. Royal Supremacy ($51) has a recent JRA Cup win but disappointed in the Caulfield Cup. Wine Dark Sea ($51) is a potential stayer but drew barrier 23 and faded in the Caulfield Cup. Asterix ($71) needs a major form turnaround. Onesmoothoperator ($61) has a proven staying background but has not shown enough recent form to inspire confidence. Soul Of Spain ($34) draws well in barrier five but needs to improve on his Caulfield Cup eighth. Future History ($51) has experience but his age and recent form are against him. Kizlyar ($35) adds depth to Joseph O’Brien’s team, although the wide draw is an obstacle. Strictly Business ($81) is difficult to recommend after his recent defeats.
Melbourne Cup speed map, barriers and track conditions
So You Are and Mr Monaco can race close to the speed, while Juja Kibo is capable of taking a forward position if the tempo allows. Point Of Law should be able to settle in the first half of the field from barrier nine without covering excessive ground. Middle Earth and Sons And Lovers have the opportunity to save ground from gates one and three, although inside draws can also create traffic problems in a field of 24. Trustyourinstinct, James J Braddock and several other wide-drawn runners face more difficult tactical decisions. The Cup is often won by a horse that relaxes through the first 2000m before building into the race; early pressure can expose runners whose stamina is marginal.
Rain is forecast around Cup week, so track condition is a significant variable. So You Are and Mr Monaco have demonstrated effectiveness on rain-affected ground, while the international runners may vary considerably in their preferences. Reassess the selections after the official Tuesday morning track rating, scratchings and rider changes.
Melbourne Cup 2026 betting tips and selections
- (20) Point Of Law – $6.50 win: Most likely winner on upside, low weight and ideal barrier.
- (16) So You Are – $12.00 win: Best value among the leading chances; winning form, staying preparation and barrier seven.
- (11) Juja Kibo – $11.00 win: Strong recent staying form and a proven Flemington performance.
- (22) Mr Monaco – $23.00 win: Best roughie and each-way option, with 52.5kg and proven Flemington staying form.
Betting verdict: Point Of Law is the horse to beat, but a lightly raced favourite in a 24-runner Melbourne Cup is no certainty. So You Are at $12 is our preferred value alternative, while Mr Monaco at $23 is worth consideration as a bigger-priced each-way runner. Juja Kibo should be included prominently in quinellas and trifectas. Trustyourinstinct, Shockletz, Middle Earth and Enfjaar are logical additions to wider multiples. The final track rating and the riding situation for Shockletz could change the balance of the race.
