2026 Victoria Derby Tips, Odds & Betting Preview

Full 2026 Victoria Derby field, barriers, fixed odds and detailed form analysis. King Snitz heads our value selections ahead of Cormier, Stormy Marco and Vallice.

Victoria Derby

The Group 1 Victoria Derby is one of Australia’s oldest and most prestigious thoroughbred races, first run in 1855 and contested over 2500m at Flemington. The $3 million classic is the centrepiece of Victoria Derby Day, the opening meeting of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, and a defining test of stamina for three-year-olds. Its honour roll includes Phar Lap, Tulloch, Dulcify, Mahogany and more recent winners Hitotsu, Riff Rocket and Observer. With the entire field tackling 2500m for the first time, this year’s Derby asks which emerging stayer can combine the necessary class, patience and endurance.

Saturday’s 2026 edition is unusually open. Sydney’s Spring Champion Stakes supplies market leaders Cormier and Stormy Marco, while True Rebel brings winning Moonee Valley Vase form and King Snitz heads the Caulfield Classic contingent. Ciaron Maher has three genuine prospects in Murshidi, Vallice and Skua, and the progressive filly Quick Finish adds a historic storyline: she is the first filly to contest the Derby since 1990 and bids to become the first female winner since Frances Tressady in 1923. The wide barriers of several favourites, the likely early pace and the prospect of showers could prove decisive in this searching staying contest.

Victoria Derby form analysis and leading chances

(4) King Snitz – $11.00 win / $3.10 place

King Snitz is the value runner in a race where most contenders are still learning their craft. He graduated from a Warrnambool maiden over 2000m to win the Group 3 Caulfield Classic over the same trip, narrowly defeating Vallice and Cignetti. That was only his fourth career start, so there should be further improvement to come as the distances rise. Damian Lane rides from barrier six, a major tactical advantage over several market rivals drawn in the outside half of the field. The unknown is whether he can sustain his finish for another 500m, but his progressive profile and favourable draw make $11 an appealing price.

(1) Cormier – $4.60 win / $1.91 place

The favourite comes through the strongest Sydney lead-up, finishing third behind Proxima Dea in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes over 2000m. He was also a close fourth in the Gloaming Stakes at 1800m. He has raced on the speed in both recent starts but may be better suited taking cover, and barrier three gives Jamie Mott that option. He has been finding the line without quite finishing off his races, so the extra 500m is a genuine test rather than an automatic advantage. His inside draw and proven Group 1 form make him the most reliable of the short-priced runners, although $4.60 is not especially generous.

(2) Stormy Marco – $4.80 win / $1.88 place

Stormy Marco’s fourth in the Spring Champion Stakes was better than it looks. He settled back and worked home against the race shape, having previously finished only half a length from Proxima Dea in the Gloaming. James McDonald is a significant booking and Chris Waller has won this race three times. The concern is barrier 16: if he is forced to settle near the tail, he may need to sustain a long run around the Flemington bend. He is a serious winning chance if the race is genuinely run and the track suits horses finishing from off the speed.

(3) True Rebel – $8.00 win / $2.50 place

True Rebel earned his place near the top of betting by winning the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase, run at Flemington over 2040m last Saturday. He wore down Skua late after settling off the pace, adding to a strong early record of two wins and a second from four starts. His ability to handle Flemington is a plus, but he now faces a further 460m, has drawn barrier 17 and is by sprinter Rebel Dane. Those factors create legitimate staying questions at $8. He is capable of winning on improvement, but we prefer runners with a more favourable map at the prices.

(6) Vallice – $16.00 win / $3.60 place

Vallice was brave when narrowly beaten by King Snitz in the Caulfield Classic after doing plenty of work near the lead. He had previously finished strongly in the Super Impose Stakes at Flemington, giving him relevant track form. Mark Zahra rides and Ciaron Maher has won the Derby twice, including last year with Observer. Barrier 14 is a hurdle, but Vallice could improve sharply if he gets cover rather than being asked to set the tempo. At $16 he is one of the more interesting each-way and exotic prospects.

(7) Skua – $14.00 win / $3.50 place

Skua led and kept fighting when second to True Rebel in the Vase, beaten only half a length. He also worked hard in the Caulfield Classic, so his recent results suggest he has the constitution to handle a searching race. John Allen rides from barrier 13. The challenge is finding a position without spending too much energy early, particularly if other runners press forward. He appeals as a genuine staying type and is worth including in wider multiples.

(5) Murshidi – $14.00 win / $3.60 place

The Geelong Classic winner is one of the few runners to have won beyond 2000m, taking out the Listed 2200m event on 20 October. That preparation gives him a credible foundation for the Derby trip, and Blake Shinn rides for Ciaron Maher. However, barrier 18 is the widest in the field, and Murshidi may be forced to go back or work hard to find cover. He is a legitimate chance on staying credentials, but his draw reduces the appeal of the $14 quote.

(8) Cignetti – $18.00 win / $4.00 place

Cignetti has been building towards a staying win and was an eye-catching close third behind King Snitz and Vallice in the Caulfield Classic, making ground late. He also had little luck in the Super Impose Stakes. William Pike rides from barrier 12, and the Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young stable knows how to prepare a Derby contender. If the 2500m suits, he could be finishing over the top of several shorter-priced rivals. At $18 he is one of the better roughies.

(9) Icy You – $17.00 win / $3.75 place

Icy You raced close to the speed and was narrowly beaten in the Geelong Classic over 2200m. That form gives him a strong staying base, and Craig Williams is a valuable booking from barrier ten. He has not yet demonstrated the same class as the market leaders, but he looks likely to see out the distance and is a credible top-four contender at double figures.

(16) Quick Finish – $23.00 win / $4.50 place

The only filly in the field is chasing a piece of history. Quick Finish has won three consecutive races, including the Group 3 Ethereal Stakes over 2000m at Caulfield, and receives 2kg from the colts and geldings. She has also beaten male opposition over 1800m. Her ability to race forward should help Jye McNeil secure a position from barrier 11, although she faces a significant rise in class and distance. Her $23 quote makes her a compelling outsider for those prepared to forgive the historical rarity of a filly winning this race.

(10) True Tone – $21.00 win / $4.33 place

Chris Waller’s lightly raced runner continues to progress and has been finding the line strongly as distances increase. Barrier 15 makes the task more difficult, but he is another who could appreciate 2500m. He belongs in broader trifecta and first-four calculations rather than as a primary selection.

Other runners

Written Empire ($41) has barrier two and can save ground, but must improve on recent staying form. Russian Rock ($31) has upside but is making a significant class jump. King Winston ($51) was beaten by True Rebel in the Vase and needs to reverse that form. Cold Shower ($71) has natural speed but may struggle to see out the 2500m at Group 1 level. Hierarchy is marked scratched in the supplied market. Emergencies Meet The Prince and Locked In are not confirmed starters and should be assessed only if they gain a run.

Speed map and race shape

Skua is a likely leader after his on-pace Vase run, with Quick Finish and Icy You also capable of racing prominently. Cormier has led in his past two starts but may be better suited taking a sit from barrier three. Vallice has worked hard on the speed recently and could again be prominent from a wide draw. King Snitz should be able to settle midfield with cover, while Stormy Marco, True Rebel and Murshidi may need to concede ground from their outside barriers. A truly run Derby would bring the strongest stayers into play, but an uncontested lead for Skua could make him difficult to run down. Monitor the track condition and early Flemington races before betting.

Victoria Derby 2026 betting tips

  1. (4) King Snitz – $11.00 win / $3.10 place: Best value selection; progressive Caulfield Classic winner with Damian Lane and barrier six.
  2. (1) Cormier – $4.60 win / $1.91 place: Most reliable favourite on Group 1 form and an economical draw.
  3. (2) Stormy Marco – $4.80 win / $1.88 place: Strong Spring Champion form, but wide barrier adds risk.
  4. (6) Vallice – $16.00 win / $3.60 place: Overlooked Caulfield Classic runner who can improve with cover.

Betting verdict: The Derby is an open race, and the two favourites are far from certainties at a distance none of these runners has tackled before. King Snitz at $11 is our preferred win-value bet, with Cormier the safer selection for those favouring the market leaders. Vallice at $16 and Cignetti at $18 are appealing wider exotics, while Quick Finish at $23 is a fascinating historical outsider with the 2kg fillies’ allowance. Consider King Snitz and Cormier in quinellas and use Stormy Marco, Vallice, True Rebel, Skua and Quick Finish in wider trifectas. Prices are from the supplied 29 October market and may change.
