The $10 million Golden Eagle has rapidly established itself as one of the defining races of the Sydney spring, bringing the country’s best four-year-olds together for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. First run in 2019, the 1500m feature at Royal Randwick receives Group 1 status for the first time in 2026, a significant milestone for a race that has already attracted some of Australia’s biggest names. Its age restriction means each horse gets just one chance to win, while $1 million of the prizemoney is directed to the runners’ nominated charity partners.
Saturday’s edition revolves around Sheza Alibi, the outstanding mare whose Randwick Guineas, Doncaster Mile and Makybe Diva Stakes victories make her the standout on exposed Group 1 form. But the 16-runner field is far from a formality. Beiwacht brings a dominant Memsie Stakes victory, Autumn Boy has already chased the favourite home at the mile, and the Silver Eagle form through Apocalyptic and Skyhook gives the Sydney contingent genuine depth. A likely strong tempo and the possibility of traffic at Randwick mean the favourite will still have to earn her victory.

Golden Eagle form analysis and leading chances
(16) Sheza Alibi – $1.75 win / $1.17 place
Eight wins from 13 starts tells only part of the story. Sheza Alibi completed the Randwick Guineas–Doncaster Mile double in the autumn and returned with a decisive 1600m Makybe Diva Stakes win, beating Autumn Boy by 2.75 lengths. Last start she was narrowly denied by Land Legend over 2000m in the Might And Power Stakes, a run that suggested she was still in outstanding order. Back to 1500m against her own age, carrying 55.5kg and jumping from effective barrier five, she has the strongest winning profile in the field. The concern is purely the price: $1.75 leaves little room for traffic or bad luck.
(3) Autumn Boy – $9.50 win / $2.30 place
The main value threat to the favourite. His second behind Sheza Alibi in the Makybe Diva was an excellent run, and his subsequent seventh in the Epsom was better than the finishing position suggests. Zac Purton takes the ride from effective barrier four, allowing him to settle behind the speed and save ground. If the pace is strong and Sheza Alibi meets trouble, Autumn Boy is one of the runners best placed to capitalise. The $9.50 quote is more attractive than the earlier $8.
(1) Beiwacht – $7.00 win / $1.91 place
His three-length Group 1 Memsie Stakes victory is a major form reference, particularly with subsequent Cox Plate winner Cosmic Crusader among those behind him. He was third in the Silver Eagle over 1300m last start after working forward, and the step to 1500m should suit if Nash Rawiller can find a comfortable rhythm. The concern is the potential for a contested lead: he may be forced to do more work than Autumn Boy or the favourite. A clear winning chance, but $7 looks fair rather than generous.
(2) Skyhook – $12.00 win / $2.80 place
Proved his credentials at 1500m when winning the Shannon Stakes by three lengths, then finished a close second to Apocalyptic in the Silver Eagle. He is racing consistently and is tactically versatile, but effective barrier 14 is awkward in a competitive field. Chad Schofield may need to go back and hope for genuine speed, or risk covering ground. The $12 price compensates somewhat for that map difficulty and makes him an each-way or exotic consideration.
(17) Apocalyptic – $20.00 win / $4.00 place
The Silver Eagle winner beat Skyhook and Beiwacht in the key Randwick lead-up and gets the mares’ 55.5kg impost. She is clearly talented enough to figure, but effective barrier 16 makes her task difficult over 1500m. Tommy Berry will need to find cover and time his run. At $20 she is a tempting knockout chance, especially if the leaders overdo it.
(8) Mr Miller – $27.00 win / $4.50 place
Chris Waller’s progressive gelding has risen sharply through the grades and ran creditably in the Epsom Handicap with a light weight. The big change is that he now carries 57.5kg, but effective barrier eight and Zac Lloyd give him options. He is one to include in wider multiples at $27, although he still has to prove he belongs with the elite four-year-olds.
(7) Decorum – $27.00 win / $4.75 place
Five wins from eight starts and a productive preparation make him one of the more interesting outsiders. His wins over Unleeshing and Cross Tasman have subsequently been supported by the form, and his Silver Eagle performance suggested he was not out of his depth. The concern is the jump to Group 1 company from effective barrier 12. He is more attractive for the placings than as a straight win bet.
(15) Amazing Journey – $20.00 win / $3.75 place
The Irish import adds a different form line and is making his Australian debut for Ciaron Maher, with Saffie Osborne riding. His overseas record warrants respect, but a first-up run in a high-pressure 1500m Group 1 from effective barrier 13 makes him difficult to assess. The market has eased from the earlier $18 quote, and we would rather watch than make him a primary selection.
Speed map and race shape
Beiwacht and Regal Award are among the horses capable of racing forward, while Attica and several others can hold prominent positions. That creates the potential for an honest tempo rather than an uncontested lead. Sheza Alibi should be able to settle within striking distance from barrier five; Autumn Boy can stalk from four. The widest runners, particularly Skyhook and Apocalyptic, may be forced to concede ground early. If the track plays fairly, the combination of a strong tempo and economical inside draws is an advantage for the favourite and Autumn Boy.
Golden Eagle 2026 betting tips
- (16) Sheza Alibi – $1.75 win: Most likely winner; best exposed class and a favourable draw.
- (3) Autumn Boy – $9.50 win / $2.30 place: Best value alternative, with Zac Purton and a good gate.
- (1) Beiwacht – $7.00 win: Group 1 quality, but early pressure is a concern.
- (2) Skyhook – $12.00 win / $2.80 place: Proven at the distance; needs luck from wide out.
Betting verdict: Sheza Alibi is the horse to beat, but at $1.75 there is limited value in a 16-runner field. Autumn Boy at $9.50 appeals as the better price-sensitive win bet, with Sheza Alibi the anchor for quinellas and trifectas. Apocalyptic at $20 and Mr Miller at $27 are worth considering for wider exotics. Reassess if the track pattern strongly favours leaders or backmarkers.
