The $3 million Big Dance takes centre stage at Royal Randwick on Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday 3 November 2026, bringing together country and provincial cup performers for a fiercely contested 1600-metre feature. First run in 2022, the race has quickly become a major part of Sydney’s spring calendar, offering connections from across New South Wales the opportunity to compete for a huge prize on one of Australian racing’s biggest afternoons.
This year’s edition has an especially compelling storyline: Gringotts returns seeking a third consecutive Big Dance victory, but the champion has been allotted a demanding 62kg. With a deep field, several progressive rivals and a significant spread in weights, assessing the value in the market is just as important as identifying the most talented horse. Below we examine the confirmed field, key chances and the factors likely to decide the race.

Big Dance 2026 Betting Preview
Gringotts — class versus the handicap
Gringotts is the benchmark. The Ciaron Maher-trained gelding has won the past two editions of this race and clearly possesses the quality and Randwick mile credentials to threaten again. His 2026 form line does not show a win, but he has been contesting strong races, including a third behind Autumn Glow and Sheza Alibi in the Winx Stakes. His most recent seventh at Rosehill was not a comprehensive defeat on margins.
The challenge is the 62kg impost. He concedes 5.5kg to Formal Display and 9kg to several of the lighter-weighted contenders. Nash Rawiller knows how to position him, and barrier nine is workable, but at short odds the weight creates a legitimate reason to look beyond the obvious selection. He remains the horse the others must beat on proven ability, not automatically the best-value bet.
Formal Display — the progressive danger
Formal Display has a far more attractive handicap profile with 56.5kg and barrier two. The Annabel and Rob Archibald-trained runner comes off a Group 3 Alan Brown Stakes victory at Rosehill, having improved sharply on his earlier Bill Ritchie Handicap effort. That last-start win makes him one of the clearest threats to Gringotts.
Chad Schofield should have options from the low draw, potentially conserving ground while several wider runners search for positions. The central question is whether he can reproduce his latest performance in a bigger, more crowded 1600m contest. If he does, the weight difference gives him a compelling winning chance.
Churchill’s Choice — draw and weight appeal
Churchill’s Choice draws barrier seven with Kerrin McEvoy aboard and only 53kg to carry. Those are attractive ingredients in a large-field Randwick mile. His recent fifth and sixth indicate he needs to improve on his latest efforts, but his earlier pair of second placings suggests he is capable of better than those results.
He is a runner to assess closely on race-day track pattern and price. The favourable weight creates upside, although backing him requires confidence that he can lift his form against the stronger opposition.
Perfumist — well drawn for a rebound
Bjorn Baker’s Perfumist carries 54kg and has Jason Collett booked from barrier five. A win earlier in the preparation confirms her ability, but subsequent performances have been mixed. She will need to rediscover her best form to win this race.
Her draw is a meaningful advantage over rivals drawn deep, particularly if the field compresses approaching the first turn. At an each-way price she deserves consideration, provided the market offers sufficient compensation for the recent inconsistency.
Magnatear — competitive with the right run
Magnatear brings a consistent recent profile, including a win before his latest fourth and second. Ashley Morgan rides at 55kg from barrier eight, an appealing position from which to find cover. The Richard and Will Freedman-trained runner looks capable of making his presence felt if the tempo is genuine.
He does not have the established Big Dance record of Gringotts, but he has fewer obvious negatives than many of the outsiders. His prospects are enhanced if the leaders overdo things and the race rewards runners able to sustain a finish.
Fully Lit — talented but the barrier complicates things
Fully Lit has 54.5kg and Regan Bayliss aboard, but barrier 18 makes his assignment more difficult. The Waterhouse and Bott stable is adept at preparing runners for major targets, and his recent third and fourth demonstrate competitive form, although his latest eighth is a concern.
The early tactical decision is crucial. Pressing forward could require an expensive effort; going back risks leaving him too much ground to make up. He has enough ability to be considered, but the draw reduces his appeal at a short price.
Matias, It’s A Knockout and Cavalry Man — lightweight possibilities
Matias has an ideal inside gate and just 53kg. His recent fourth and second make him a legitimate knockout hope if Reece Jones can secure clear running at the right time. It’s A Knockout arrives after a last-start win and also carries 53kg, although barrier 15 means Andrew Adkins may need luck in transit.
Cavalry Man has won his past two starts and carries 53kg, a profile that makes him one of the more interesting longer-priced runners. The difficulty is barrier 17 and the rise in class. He is worth keeping in wider multiples rather than dismissing solely because his form has been built away from the metropolitan spotlight.
Big Dance Speed Map and Race Shape
A 20-runner mile at Randwick makes early positioning particularly important. Formal Display (2), Perfumist (5), Churchill’s Choice (7), Magnatear (8) and Gringotts (9) have more manageable draws, while Fully Lit (18), Matusalem (21), Rolling Magic (22) and Puntin (24) face more complex tactical assignments. An outside barrier does not automatically mean a horse will race forward, and the final map depends on stable instructions and scratchings.
The preferred scenario for the on-speed runners is an economical first half with limited pressure. A stronger tempo would make it easier for midfield runners to close and could test the topweight late. Gringotts has the class to overcome adversity, but Formal Display and Magnatear may enjoy more efficient runs relative to their handicap burdens.
Big Dance 2026 Tips and Selections
- Formal Display ($7.00) — top selection: strong last-start Group 3 win, barrier two and significant weight relief from Gringotts.
- Gringotts ($3.50) — clear class runner and dual defending champion, but 62kg is a genuine obstacle.
- Magnatear ($12.00) — solid recent form and a workable draw; a reliable contender for exotics.
- Churchill’s Choice ($6.50) — lightweight and well drawn, with scope to improve on recent results.
Best bet (provisional): Formal Display ($7.00) – Gringotts may still be the most accomplished runner, but the handicap differential makes Formal Display the more interesting betting proposition. We will reassess the value once current bookmaker prices, final scratchings and the race-day track pattern are confirmed.

Market: Gringotts $3.50 favourite; Churchill’s Choice $6.50; Formal Display and Perfumist $7.00. Our preferred win bet remains Formal Display at the quoted $7.00, with the 5.5kg weight advantage over Gringotts central to the case. Odds are indicative and may change before race time.
How Do Horses Qualify for the Big Dance?
Horses qualify for eligibility by winning or finishing second in designated NSW country cup and selected provincial races over the preceding 12 months. Eligible runners are then ranked by benchmark rating, with the final field accommodating 20 starters, including two Wild Card exemptions, plus four emergencies.
