After scratchings I’m happy to stay out of this. (2) Schuhbek is into $1.95 and as a 7 start maiden he won’t be getting any of mine but I do concede he’s racing well and a win looks close.

(10) Psycho Star also looks ready to win 3rd up if she can improve her racing manners.

Fascinating race with (7) Forbes here. He’s been a complete enigma his whole life, having run a narrow 2nd to Anamoe on debut. His run first up is good enough to win this, beaten 3.2L by General Beau, but he was absolutely awful in the Danehill. He gets a few more gear changes but he’s tough to back.

(9) Spirit Of Pepin looks a silly price at $23. Forgive last start when he had no luck in a messy race, and before that he ran 2nd to Fire in a maiden and 3rd to Mornington Glory in a maiden, who smashed Forbes in the Danehill. With better luck he can run a much improved race.

(10) Extreme Emotion has jumped out well and this looks a set play for the locally trained filly.

Tip: (9) Spirit Of Pepin- $23.00/4.60 at Sportsbet

Betting Strategy: 0.25/0.75 units E/W Spirit Of Pepin

(5) The Billionaire is short but ticks enough boxes for me to get involved. He was caught wide on speed and stuck on very gamely for 2nd to Starry Legend first up at Mornington which is great form. 2nd up in Adelaide was only a bm68 but he never got out of 2nd gear, winning from the front very stylishly. I think he’s a Saturday class sprinter any day of the week and with the race fitness here he should be too good.

(1) Brenlyn’s Trooper looks a handy horse coming off a narrow 2nd in the Creswick before a spell but that was a very messy race. The run prior was a truer guide when 4.5L off Curran- a solid form reference.

(4) South Parade is a handy horse but I think 1100m will be a bit sharp for him and wait until he gets to 1400m.

(3) Jimmy The Bear was a good maiden winner at Mildura on debut, sitting on speed and proving too strong after copping some pressure. He should measure up.

(1) Brooklyn Boss is another strong maiden winner coming from the back. Whether he can settle a bit closer from gate 2 I’m not sure but the late splits were strong.

(9) Yaphet probably comes out of the best maiden- a 2nd to Footlights with Rhinoceros in 4th and Sharper in 6th. He wasn’t given a great ride there, snicked back and held up. He maps for a soft run here with Blake Mcdougall taking the ride.

Interesting placement with (1) Vungers who has trialled very well leading into this. He’s never won first up however he usually resumes over an unsuitable 1100m. He’s at his ideal T/D here fresh, having only missed a place once at Bendigo. He maps to get an uncontested lead and if he were coming into this 2nd up he’d be a fantastic bet, but trusting the local stable to have him fit for this.

(4) Tatunka also loves racing on his home track. At their best I’d say Vungers is a better horse, but Tatunka is fit and coming out of a strong race behind the unbeaten Riot And Rose where he got too far back.

(7) Jazz Star didn’t have the best run in that race either, forced to sit wide for most of the race but stuck on well and did beat Tatunka home.

I think (6) Real Gun should probably be favourite here so I’m happy to have a good bet on him. He was only run down late by Turbeau first up with a gap back to 3rd, with that horse then running a good 3rd in a strong bm70 next time out. Real Gun then dropped to a bm58 and destroyed his rivals, including a subsequent 2.5L winner at Swan Hill. I think he’s come back well this prep and should have every chance from barrier 2.

(13) Duchess Of Dorsett won well first up in bm64 grade but did have every chance on her home track. She should get every chance again but I think she’s short enough.

(15) Maldestro isn’t the worst roughie. He went on a winning streak last prep in easier grade but I thought his first up effort behind Super Thief and Canadian Gold was very good. He’s $61 here and shouldn’t be.

(4) Haystacks Calhoun is another roughie worth including. He resumed with a solid win and did take on some hot races last prep- the highlight a 2.6L 7th to Minhaaj at 200-1.

Tip: (6) Real Gun- $3.40 at Bet365

Also Backing: (4) Haystacks Calhoun- $17.00/4.20 at TAB

Value: (15) Maldestro- $61.00/13.00 at PlayUp

Strong edition of the Bendigo Cup and I thought (2) Mosh Music was an easy bet to have. She’s flying this prep having hit the line very well in the Naturalism and Bart Cummings. Her last 600m was the 3rd best of the Bart Cummings, only bettered by Realm Of Flowers and Master Of Wine, with her 400-200m split the best of the race in a very fast race. We’ve already seen Tralee Rose come out of that and win the Geelong Cup and Pondus smashed in betting at Moonee Valley. She’s a good staying mare with the ideal platform 3 weeks between runs and I think she’ll run a huge race.

(1) Amade has run in the Naturalism and Bart Cummings as well, beaten home by Mosh Music in both runs and now meets her 1.5kg worse at the weights. He has however raced since in the Geelong Cup last week where he missed the start badly and ran on very well for 4th. Has to be a chance off that although does have to concede weight to everything.

(5) Tooradin was disappointing last start at $5.50 in the Herbert Power but his form prior was rock solid. This has been his target all prep and it’s hard to discount the stable.

(8) Smokin’ Romans is a talented stayer but I think he’s too short here. He was solid first up but beaten by Wil John coming off a grand national hurdle win. He’s never beaten much in his life despite doing it easily, and this is his proper test.

Tip: (2) Mosh Music- $12.00 at Sportsbet

Saver: (1) Amade- $5.00 at Sportsbet

Incredibly open race. (12) Rousseau was good late first up in a strong form race and should appreciate the 1600m. His best is good enough as evidenced by that win in town when off the map in betting.

(10) Vardani ran okay in two Aus runs last prep and has been given time. First up at the mile looks ideal.

(2) Marsanny looks well placed 2nd up. He wasn’t bad first up in a stronger race and go back to his last prep in NSW he took on some hot races. 2nd up last prep he ran 3rd to Yao Dash beating home The Astrologist before taking on some very hot races including the Randwick Guineas. Maps well and should be in the finish.

Good little contest to finish. (14) Maybe The Best is favourite after two strong efforts this prep. She comes out of two strong form races and looks ready to win.

(4) Our Lone Star has trialled very well for his first up run. He was good in those city 3yo staying races last prep but should be sharp enough for 1300m.

(3) Volcanic Rock is an ex Waterhouse/Bott horse with some strong form lines. He is a listed winner as a 2yo and if he’s 100% will take some beating.

A few unknowns with Our Lone Star and Volcanic Rock and I’m inclined to just watch this.

Tip: (3) Volcanic Rock- $11.00/3.10 at Sportsbet

Trent’s interest in the thoroughbred started out as a spark with Black Caviar, became a flame with Winx, and has now intensified into a burning obsession with Arcadia Queen. He started out throwing loose change on random trifectas at the pub, but it wasn’t long before he was watching replays and looking at sectionals, weights and markets. Trent specializes in Victorian racing and hopes his first winner as an owner is just around the corner.
