Canterbury Racing Tips: Wednesday, October 27th

Billy Bestford previews every race today at Canterbury, and is betting up in Race 5.

canterbury-racing.jpg

Wednesday racing heads to Canterbury for a six race meeting on what is expected to be a fine and sunny day.

The track is currently rated a good 4 with the rail in the true position so here’s to hoping every horse gets its chance today.

Small fields are the theme of the day with just 39 runners across the six races.

Billy Bestford once again previews every race on the card and is especially keen on one late in the day.

Best Bet: Race 5 – (6) Comme Bella Fille

Best Value: Race 6 – (6) Shadow Bridge

(6) Green Flash looks hard to beat in the opener today off the back of a decent first up run. That was over 1400m and his best form is over longer trips than that. Gets out to the mile today and his form around Grace And Harmony last prep looks good for this.

Not sure what to make of (2) Agrimony who was hammered on his Australian debut before knocking up to run 5th. There wasn’t too much to like about that run but the market loved him that day and he’s sure to have improved with that run under his belt.

(1) Formentera was a strong winner fresh after almost 12 months away from the races. Will only improve off that and is building a handy record.

Tip: (6) Green Flash - $3.20 at Bet365

(6) Norwegian Bliss has absolutely bolted in her two career starts to date and looks well above average. She once again takes a step up in grade today but I think she can handle it. She puts herself up on the speed and generally stays out of trouble. She ran good time there last start and all signs point to another good performance here. The very slight drop back in trip shouldn’t be an issue and from gate 5 she will see every favour in the run.

(2) Sur La Mer was a good win first up, letting down well to finish over the top of them. She’s only missed the quinella on one occasion and looks the main danger to the favourite.

Tip: (6) Norwegian Bliss - $1.90 at Bet365

Betting Strategy: 2u WIN Norwegian Bliss

Pretty keen to see (5) Zarastro back at the races after a very nice debut in what has turned out to be an extremely handy 2yo race. He finished 2nd to Paulele that day, which obviously stacks up pretty well for this sort of race. Was put away quickly following that and has been given three spaced trials since. The most recent of those was some of his best work, crossing the line under a hold and I think Chris Waller will have him primed to run well fresh.

(3) King Kapa resumes for the new stable and brings some strong form from QLD. Was last seen finishing 4th in the G2 Champagne Classic, 3L off Prince Of Boom. Looked good at a recent trial and the Joe Pride yard is flying at the moment.

Tip: (5) Zarastro - $2.60 at TAB

(4) Speed Legend has got to be one of the most interesting runners here today, resuming from a very long spell. He previously raced under a different name “Thanks To you” and was last seen on race day back in February 2020 before being shipped off to Hong Kong following a couple of good wins in his first prep. Things clearly didn’t work out over there and he’s since joined the Les Bridge yard. His two recent trials have been very impressive considering the time he’s had off and I think he could have a bit of X Factor about him.

(8) Rubamos is a good fresh horse and comes into this off the back of a trial win. He will roll to the lead from gate 1 for Tommy Berry and could be hard to run down.

(3) Mnemeth is flying this time in for Mitch Beer and deserves a crack in this sort of company. He’s a pretty bulletproof kind of horse and will give you a good sight.

Tip: (4) Speed Legend - $3.60 at Sportsbet

Betting Strategy: 1u WIN Speed Legend

You couldn’t miss the run of (6) Comme Bella Fille first up. She was hammered in betting that day but just got too far out of her ground, flashing home for a good 2nd from well back in the field. She was five months between runs there so has plenty of improvement to come. Getting out to 1900m is certainly no knock and Tommy Berry sticks for the ride today. She shouldn’t have to get too far back today in the smaller field.

(6) Narrated was competitive in this grade last start, finishing 2nd to Mightybeel who has since won again. She’ll make her own luck up front and could get away with this if she has it her own way.

Can’t knock anything (1) True Marvel has done recently, winning two on the bounce now over long staying trips. Has had a little freshen up here for this much shorter trip but can’t be counted out.

(9) Tiny was very good fresh on a wet track behind a pretty smart horse in Six Again. They beat the rest of the field pretty comfortably and she will take improvement out of that run. 2nd up form is very good and she looks hard to beat here.

(6) Shadow Bridge looks the value in the race and I’m keen to have something on him at the price. Goes much better with a run under the belt and just went way too hard in the lead fresh. From barrier 1 he can have it all his own way.

(3) Rammstein flies first up and was competitive in stronger races than this last prep. Will just need a touch of luck from the wide gate.

Tip: (9) Tiny - $4.20 at TopSport

Value: (6) Shadow Bridge - $9.10 at Boombet

Betting Strategy: 1u WIN Tiny, 0.5u WIN Shadow Bridge
