Sunday’s Australian horse racing is headlined by the Cranbourne Cup, along with the Apache Cat Classic. The Horse has previewed both of the feature races at Cranbourne and provided his best bets for the day below!

Looking to back-up with another short-priced favourite. (4) Excelman looks to be the one to beat here. He has had his fair share of bad luck—since winning a race and subsequently being disqualified for un underweight Michael Walker. He then went around in a race which was declared ‘no-race’ after an unfortunate incident to another horse and jockey. Today Damian Oliver takes the ride and will drop in behind the leaders to get a gun-run. As long as Oliver can get him out with enough time to present an effort, he is going to be tough to beat.

(10) Wahine Toa looks the danger for Maher & Eustace whose maiden win came over a similar distance.

The Apache Cat Classic brings together some quality sprinters to compete over 1000 metres. Looking forward to this one and expect there to be plenty of pace and some serious intent early on.

I am not going to overcomplicate things here and will stick with the favourite (7) Ancestry who is just bomb-proof. He has won five from ten and placed once. And he has been winning races under all conditions—albeit usually over the 1100-1200 metres. He will find this a little shorter than his pet distance but gets a good gate and will take plenty of beating.

There are any number of threats in the race with (2) Vainstream the one that will come on late. If the track plays to his advantage he can be winning. (11) Kalkarni Royal is another one I want to include into any exotics.

The 2020 Cranbourne Cup has a fantastic field with plenty of leading chances.

(11) Shot Of Irish has been racing really well and I would have him on top if the track was Soft or Heavy. But today the Good 4 will bring in a few other contenders.

(2) Dr Drilll won this race last year and will no doubt be prepped to win this race. Comes from a leading stable and has won three times from five over this distance. Previously raced in a Group 3 and Listed race this preparation.

At the $5.00 Dr Drill will provide me with a ‘saver bet’ as I want to be mainly backing (6) Plein Ciel. A second to Al Galayel in a Group 3 reads pretty good. Likes the Good track and handles this distance range—seven of his eight wins have come on Good tracks. Drawn to the inside (gate 3) Billy Eagan should drop in behind the leaders and get the charmed run of the race. Even luck will give him every chance of taking this out.

The Horse

The Horse found the thought of placing bets and drinking beers much more appealing once he was married, and that led to an interest in the many intricacies of The Great Game. He enjoys the challenge of predicting what will happen in any given race, but also loves horses themselves, none more so than the mighty mudlark Jungle Edge. His focus lies on metropolitan racing in Victoria and NSW, however isn’t afraid to find one out wide. Away from racing, The Horse is an avid drummer – quite a difficult task with a set of hooves.
