Geelong Cup Day Racing Tips: Wednesday, October 21st

The 2020 Geelong Cup could be a key race heading towards this year’s Melbourne Cup, and the Group 3 event headlines racing at Geelong on Wednesday afternoon.

Geelong

The Geelong Cup has become a key race relative to the Melbourne Cup in recent years, and it headlines the nine-race card at Geelong for midweek racing in Victoria on Wednesday.

Trent Crebbin assesses the every race on the card below – including the day’s feature event – along with his tips and betting advice. His two best bets come up in Race 1 and Race 8, while he thinks a horse in Race 6 represents the best value on the card.

The track is rated a Good 4 with the rail in the true position.

Best Bet: Race 1 – (2) Excelman

Next Best: Race 8 – (1) Xilong

Best Value: Race 6 – (10) Vilanculos

Looks an ideal race for (2) Excelman to win again. He steps up to the 2400m for the first time, but I can’t really see that being an issue. By Reliable Man, 4th up here and drawn well in barrier 5 he should get every chance up in trip. The one slight knock I have is that his last start over 2025m at Cranbourne was run very slowly and perhaps isn’t the hit out going up in trip, but he brings a dominant SP profile and is a stayer on the rise in good form.

(4) Etna is in good form and comes off a strong 2400m win last start but did start $26 there and likely gets a long way back.

(5) Da Deputy hit the line nicely behind Excelman last start and will be suited up in trip. He’s not the worst place chance and will likely start close to 100-1 on the exchange.

A race I found quite tough to find an angle, with (3) Scottish Dancer the hardest to beat coming off a strong win over 1600m in the same grade. He settled back on that occasion and got the race run to suit but looks to get a long way back again from barrier 11.

(8) Influential Jack maps well but this is a stronger race than last start.

(11) Serengeti led from a wide barrier last start and got the win, so surely they go forward again. Whether he’s got the class in an even race I’m not sure.

(10) Frankie Pinot steps up from a class 1 where he carried 62kg on a heavy track. He drops to 58kg here and if he jumps better can be further forward than he was last start. His closing sectionals here last start were quite strong, and the horse that ran the best splits of the meeting ran very well in a much stronger race at their next start. The horse Frankie Pinot beat, Fender Bender, ran a very credible race at Caulfield Saturday, beaten just 2.3L by Endanger in listed company. In a very tough race, I’m happy to side with Frankie Pinot.

One of the better bm64’s going around with some quality horses going around. I think (5) Fundraiser is probably the horse to beat here. He was far too good in maiden grade first up off a gelding operation last prep, and then ran a very good, and touch unlucky 3rd behind Hidden Legend and Charleise. His recent jumpout win was very good, but it does depend what they do from the gate. He certainly has the tactical speed to be forward of midfield, and if that eventuates, he should go close.

(1) The Astrologist ran a slashing 3rd when first up last prep in a handy race before another solid 3rd down the straight. He’s certainly good enough on his day and is another that draws wide so the tactics will be interesting.

(2) Triton Rising has to be in the game too, having run well in very similar 3yo company last prep. He’s a bit hit and miss and whilst he’s 1/1 at 1100m, that was a synthetic maiden. He’s potentially better over 1400m.

(10) Witchfulthinking doesn’t quite have the form or class of some of these but is good first up and maps to lead easily from barrier 3. I can’t really find a solid betting edge with Fundraiser, who is my top pick. If I knew they were going forward I could entertain a play, but in an open race I’m happy to stay out.

Very deep race again stacked full of talented horses. (10) Ocular is one of those and has to be the horse to beat. He resumed with a dominant 4.3L win at Bendigo, before starting a strong favourite down the straight when perhaps not handling the course and subsequently pulling up lame. He bounced back with a strong win with 60kg in a bm70, running the fastest splits of the meeting coming from back in the field after racing wide without cover. The horse he beat there, The Gauch is no slouch and Ocular draws much better here in barrier 5. Up to 1200m is ideal, he’s got a fitness edge on his rivals and he’ll be hard to beat again.

(1) Bumper Blast is an interesting one, coming off a let up. His win over 1000m first up was excellent before putting in a couple of disappointing runs his next two. He has to carry 63kg which seems a big task, but his best is certainly good enough.

I think the danger at odds is (6) Music Addition who will give a sight in front. This horse is in great form, winning the synthetic series final over Titan Blinders three back, running 2nd to Ancestry his next and running a narrow 4th to Athiri up in Sydney last start. He gets Zahra on board who is airborne, and he’ll roll forward and be there a long way.

(8) Overkill is another talented horse who has had 4 career starts for 3 wins and a 2nd. He beat Ocular when they met at The Valley last prep and had the SP that day, but Ocular was first up and did a bit more work in run. I think Ocular can turn the tables with the better draw and added fitness.

(12) Wicklow Town next best who is a consistent horse and who’s form around Mystery Shot reads well.

(1) Simply Invincible was very well backed at Caulfield last start and didn’t have much luck in the straight, only really seeing clear air for 100m. He was strong through the line and his 4th up record is very good.

(5) Kaplumpich looks the danger. He struggles to win but was solid in 3rd last start behind Groundswell.

(10) Ghodeleine drops back from a 2000m race behind Saracen Knight when well beaten. Her two runs prior over 1600m and 1400m were very good behind Shandy. She draws barrier 11 which could be a bit tough, but it’s a long run to the first turn at the Geelong 1500m start, so Kah should get her chance to find a position.

(6) Approach Discreet is a horse I have a lot of time for, but he comes here 8 weeks between runs and is perhaps better on a track with some give. I’m happy to go again with Simply Invincible here- I liked the backing for it last start when $11 into $4.60, and I think the wide draw will be fine from the 1500m start. He should be able to take his time rolling forward and ideally sit outside the leader. He’s a fairly big striding horse that will be suited in clear air and on another good surface.

Bit of a lacklustre Geelong Classic in my opinion, heading towards the Derby. It’s a tricky race to assess too, because the favourite here is (5) Ultimate Edition who absolutely walked in, to the tune of 5.5L over 1600m last start when leading all the way.

A distant 6.75L away in 3rd was the race favourite (4) Rousseau who got a mile back, came the widest on the turn and ran on okay. Looking at the sectionals there, Ultimate Edition actually ran his last 400m in the same 23.52 as Rousseau, and his last 200m was only 0.01 seconds slower. Rousseau draws barrier one here, so I’d be shocked if he doesn’t settle closer, but it’s a huge margin to turn around, even taking into account their SP’s there.

The horse with the best form, and probably talent, is (1) Alcyone, but the jury is out on how he’s going. He somehow started $5 last start in the Super Impose behind Khoekhoe and Young Werther, which is a very good form reference, but he had every chance there and could only manage 8th. He did pull up lame there and had a throat abnormality, so there were clear excuses and up to 2200m will definitely suit this grinding stayer.

Looking away from the market fancies, the two O’Brien horses make some appeal. (8) Kenzan comes here off a narrow 2nd on heavy ground, essentially at this T/D. He was jumping up from 1600m (where he ran a solid 4th to Oceanography and Salto Angel) and Olly sticks here.

(10) Vilanculos couldn’t quite get past the leader as the $1.65 favourite last start but did run 3rd to leading Derby contender Redwood Shadow the start before when $7.50 in the market. She gets Kah on board here from barrier 3 which is perfect.

I found it tough to back either Ultimate Edition or Rousseau out of their lead up which was a barrier trial, and Alcyone seems short enough coming off two plain runs, so I’m happy to have something on Kenzan and Vilanculos at odds.

87.57.67.5

A strong edition of the Geelong Cup in my opinion. (2) Ashrun is the favourite coming off two strong seconds in France over 3000m. His most recent run behind Call The Wind was very good as that horse is a world class stayer.

(1) San Huberto actually beat Call The Wind three starts back, albeit Call The Wind was unlucky.

(5) Skyward finished 4th behind Anthony Van Dyck and Stradivarius last start when unsuited by the slow tempo. He still came home quite strongly and wasn’t beaten far. All his best runs have been on firm tracks so if we are still on a good 4, he should be suited near the pace.

Of the locals, I think (7) Steel Prince is the most obvious after covering ground into the wind at Flemington.

(11) Entente is an interesting runner. His form at benchmark level is clearly inferior to this, but he profiles similarly to 2018 winner Runaway for the Waterhouse/Bott team who led all the way.

(4) Le Don De Vie has to be respected too coming off an easy win at Windsor, as does (3) King Of Leogrance coming out of the Turnbull.

Great race, and you could genuinely make a case for all of them. I’ve landed on Skyward on top who should appreciate a good track and a bit of tempo injected by Entente, but it’s very open and honestly quite hard to recommend a standout bet.

Happy to be with (1) Xilong again here. She probably just lacked a bit of conditioning first up and there was plenty of pressure for the lead. She still ran okay, beaten 3.9L in a tougher race behind Fiesta and Felicia. She’s got a good 2nd up record, having put 5L on Garner when 2nd up this time last year, and she’s clearly the best horse in the race being a group 2 winner. If she can get across without doing too much work, she should be right in the finish.

Outside of her, the race really drops off. (17) Kalkarni Royale needs one to drop out to make the field, but she’ll be better suited at 1200m and from barrier one will do no work to find the lead.

(6) Algadon Miss finished just behind Xilong last start when racing wide but I think Xilong is a far better horse and with the race under her belt will only be fitter. The $4+ available about Xilong looks very nice and I’m happy to have a decent crack.

Tough one to finish. I’ve always had a bit of time for (11) November Dreaming who comes here first up. Whilst she only won a Pakenham class 1 last prep, she wasn’t far off some smart types, including finish 1L away from Game Keeper over 2000m before a spell. Her first up run last prep behind the smart Final Man was solid and she can roll forward with Willo on board.

(14) Boom Boom Becker finally got the maiden out of the way and could go on with it here.

(12) He’s A Balter has to step up in grade again but has won his last two.

(5) Just Jake is better on wet ground but did well first up when leading.

(6) Kuzco Lad has won two in a row for the Waterhouse/Bott combo and should be leading again. There is plenty of pressure on paper, so he won’t get it all his own way, but expect support for him on the day if it’s hard to make ground.

Happy to watch the market with November Dreaming here, because I think she’ll get out a touch and despite being first up is probably the best horse in race and can get away with this.

Top Pick: (11) November Dreaming $4.8 TAB

Betting Strategy: 1 unit WIN November Dreaming

Trent’s interest in the thoroughbred started out as a spark with Black Caviar, became a flame with Winx, and has now intensified into a burning obsession with Arcadia Queen. He started out throwing loose change on random trifectas at the pub, but it wasn’t long before he was watching replays and looking at sectionals, weights and markets. Trent specializes in Victorian racing and hopes his first winner as an owner is just around the corner.
