We head to Kilmore for the Victorian race meeting where the forecast is fine and the track is a Good 4. The Horse follows up after a solid weekend of profits and has sought out a few more winners. He has covered Race 1, Race 2, Race 4 and Race 8.

A terribly average maiden to start proceedings, but (6) Forliah looks to have her best chance to get that elusive win. Last start she had excuses, but the start prior was a reasonable effort—and that form would be enough to win this race. Her overall racing record has been pretty frustrating with 12 starts for 6 places—so she is due. Many of her starts have been over a greater distance, but she has placed 2 from 2 over the 1600 metres. Damian Lane is the big factor here—in his current mood he could be riding a greyhound and still have a great chance. Outside Forliah, (8) Lorraine looks to be a threat.

The short-priced favourite (7) Diamonds’n’stones has clearly the lead-in form to be winning this. The bookies haven’t offered up much, and the punters haven’t missed him either. The Hawkes trained gelding is 4 starts for 3 places, the most impressive being this preparation. Last start he placed 3rd behind Rising Sphere and prior to that he was chasing Sayumi. Not keen to get too involved due to the price, but he goes into the multiples and heads the exotics. (4) Sense Of Doubt looks the best of the remaining field.

Pretty keen on the chances of (6) Frisson, but again we’ve missed the decent price. The opening $2.60 was a good bet, and the current quote is still playable, but things may get even tighter before the jump. At 5 starts for 3 places, including two nice runs prior, he looks to have most of this field covered. Damian Thornton stays in the saddle, and the inside draw looks to give him all the favours. (12) I’m A Shampion can improve and be there about, while (8) Mista Sizzle ran well in a trial (watch for market support).

There’s a bit of support for the Maher/Eustace runner (7) Vapid, with Damian Lane in the saddle. She took 8 starts to break her maiden, despite 4 places along the way, and today she takes on the BM58 for the second time. Last start she flashed late to miss the places, only 0.9 lengths behind the winner Pin Ping. Galactus was 3rd and has gone onto win a better race.

She would be the Best Bet of the day if it wasn’t for (1) Rebel Racer who has raced in Open grade and last start competed against the likes of Persan & High Emocean. His best looks to be over further (in terms of what he has competed in) but has performed in much better company over this distance. It’s tough to split them, so taking a Quinella.

The Horse

The Horse found the thought of placing bets and drinking beers much more appealing once he was married, and that led to an interest in the many intricacies of The Great Game. He enjoys the challenge of predicting what will happen in any given race, but also loves horses themselves, none more so than the mighty mudlark Jungle Edge. His focus lies on metropolitan racing in Victoria and NSW, however isn’t afraid to find one out wide. Away from racing, The Horse is an avid drummer – quite a difficult task with a set of hooves.
