Sha Tin Racing Tips: Sunday, April 25th

Sha Tin hosts three international Group 1s on Sunday afternoon and Tim Geers has provided his best bets for the key races.

It’s a huge day of international racing at Sha Tin on Sunday afternoon, with three Group 1s on the card in Hong Kong.

The Chairman’s Sprint, FWD Champion’s Mile and FWD QEII Cup headline the meeting, with a strong contingent of Japanese horses making the trip over to take on the locals.

Tim Geers has previewed the day’s key races, as well as one other horse he’s keen on in Race 6.

The first Group 1 of the day is the Chairman’s Sprint and (1) Danon Smash looks one of the better bets of the day. He should be exceptionally hard to beat. He won the HK Sprint in December and then returned to Japan where he won the Takamatsunomiya Kinen. He’s a legitimate Group 1 sprinter and I don’t think there’s much in this field that can boast the same tag.

(12) Beauty Applause might be the best of the locals along with (6) Wellington.

(13) Gallant Express was dominant on debut after impressing at the trials. He had a nice run throughout when he won and he does have to overcome a wide draw and a rise in grade today, but he looks pretty smart and should be up to winning again. I don’t think there’s a great deal in this race that will trouble him so with even luck, he should win again.

The Japanese dominate this race. (6) Daring Tact is the best of them, in my opinion, and if she brings her best form here, she will be extremely hard to beat. She’s a three-time Group 1 winner and comes here having been beaten a neck in G2 company in Japan last start. Prior to that she ran 3^rd to Almond Eye and Contrail, where she copped a poor steer. Draws barrier 1 here and if she gets the luck, she’ll be the one to beat.

(1) Glory Vase ran 4^th in the same race as Daring Tact last start, beaten 0.8L. Last time he was in Hong Kong, he won the HK Vase over 2400m, but that was in 2019. He’s typically better over 2400m, where three of his five career wins have come at.

(7) Loves Only You was a G2 winner over 2200m last start in Japan. She won the Japanese Oaks back in 2019 which was her only Group 1 win. Not convinced she’s in the same class as Daring Tact.

(2) Exultant is probably the best of the Hong Kong horses but he’s been below his best this season.

Tim Geers

A trip to Hong Kong quickly had Tim hooked to the racing caper, maintaining the best place anywhere in the world on a Wednesday night is Happy Valley. He holds a strong interest in the Hong Kong form, along with the metropolitan racing in Sydney and Melbourne. He’s a fan of dry tracks, Zac Purton and takes particular interest in identifying patterns in the form. Tim wears many hats, juggling the roles of form analyst, jockey manager and racehorse owner.
