2026 Epsom Handicap Tips, Odds & Betting Preview

The 2026 Epsom Handicap brings together a deep field of established Group 1 performers and emerging milers at Royal Randwick this Saturday, October 3.

Autumn Boy heads the early betting after drawing barrier one, while unbeaten New Zealand mare Well Written has landed ideally in gate three. Attica gets into the race with just 51.5kg, while proven Group 1 horses Ceolwulf, Tom Kitten, Idle Flyer and Lady Shenandoah add considerable depth to the $1.5 million Randwick mile.

Autumn Boy Gets the Draw to Beat

Autumn Boy looks exceptionally well placed from barrier one with James McDonald aboard. The Chris Waller-trained four-year-old already owns Group 1 wins in the Caulfield Guineas and Rosehill Guineas and has repeatedly shown that a high-pressure mile is right in his wheelhouse.

His spring preparation has built nicely. After resuming in the Memsie Stakes, he ran second in the Makybe Diva Stakes over 1600m and now returns to Randwick, where he was runner-up in both the Randwick Guineas and Doncaster Mile earlier this year. With 55.5kg, an inside draw and McDonald booked, there are very few negatives in his setup.

Well Written Brings an Unbeaten Record from New Zealand

Well Written is the fascinating runner. The Stephen Marsh-trained mare arrives from New Zealand unbeaten in seven starts and has drawn barrier three for Zac Lloyd.

She receives 4kg from topweight Ceolwulf and half a kilo from Autumn Boy, and the draw should allow Lloyd to give her an economical run close to the speed. The obvious question is whether her New Zealand form measures up against a field containing multiple Australian Group 1 winners. Saturday gives us the answer, but she could hardly have drawn better for the test.

Attica Gets In Light

Attica is one of the most interesting betting runners at the weights. The Joseph Pride-trained runner carries only 51.5kg and has drawn barrier six, giving Kerrin McEvoy plenty of options.

He does not have to concede the huge weight advantage enjoyed by several of the runners on the 50kg minimum, but he gets a substantial pull on the established stars at the top of the handicap. In a race where Autumn Boy and Well Written are taking a significant share of the market, Attica appeals as one of the key alternatives.

Ceolwulf Has Class but Carries 59kg

Ceolwulf is the class horse at the top of the weights and draws well in barrier seven. His challenge is straightforward: he must give between 3.5kg and 9kg to the rest of the field.

That does not rule him out, particularly if Randwick is favouring horses racing off the speed, but it makes his task substantially harder than the lighter-weighted market leaders. Chad Schofield should be able to find a comfortable midfield position and give him his chance.

Other Epsom Handicap Chances

Tom Kitten draws barrier four with 57.5kg and should enjoy an economical run, while Idle Flyer and Lady Shenandoah have much tougher assignments from barriers 18 and 16 respectively.

Militarize also draws very wide in barrier 19. At the other end of the weights, Declichy Boulevard has 50kg and barrier two, while Mr Miller draws five with the same weight. Those lightly weighted runners could become important for exotics if the handicap conditions bring the field together.

Epsom Handicap Speed Map

The inside draws for Autumn Boy and Well Written are significant. Both should be able to secure positions without spending unnecessary energy, while Fully Lit is another runner capable of contributing to the early tempo.

Several key runners have drawn wide, including Idle Flyer, Lady Shenandoah and Militarize, so their riders face an early decision between pressing forward or conceding ground. That gives the horses drawn inside a tactical advantage around the Randwick mile.

Autumn Boy has the most complete setup. He brings elite Australian mile form, is third-up after an excellent Makybe Diva Stakes run, draws barrier one and retains James McDonald. At around the $3 mark he is short enough in a 19-horse handicap, but he deserves his position at the top of the market.

Well Written is the obvious danger and may still have considerable upside, while Attica appeals as the runner capable of giving the favourites a serious challenge at a better price thanks to his light weight and favourable draw.
