The Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes is one of the highlights of Victoria Derby Day and one of Australia’s most coveted prizes for three-year-old sprinters. Worth $2 million, the 1200m contest is run at set weights down Flemington’s famous straight course, a unique test of speed, balance and the ability to handle racing without a bend. Victory can also be enormously valuable beyond the racetrack, particularly for colts seeking to establish their credentials as future stallions.
Saturday’s 2026 edition brings together 14 runners from different form lines, including the Golden Rose in Sydney and Flemington’s own Danehill Stakes. The Next Episode has already demonstrated his ability on the straight, while St Gotthard brings Group 1 form and Satono Glow and Natural Fling give the fillies a strong presence. Several contenders have also used recent Flemington jump-outs to familiarise themselves with the course. With the possibility of rain, where the jockeys choose to race across the width of the straight could prove as important as early speed.

Coolmore Stud Stakes form analysis and leading chances
(1) The Next Episode – $3.70 win / $1.57 place
The clearest proven Flemington straight-six contender. Ciaron Maher’s colt returned from a break to win the Group 2 Danehill Stakes over 1100m on heavy ground, narrowly defeating Natural Fling despite carrying 58kg. The result is especially relevant if Saturday’s rain arrives: he has already shown he can quicken on a rain-affected straight course. Mark Zahra retains the ride, and barrier 14 could be an asset if the field gravitates towards the outside rail. The step from 1100m to 1200m is manageable, although he must give Natural Fling a 2kg allowance compared with their last meeting. Top pick on proven course form, but not an unbeatable favourite.
(13) Satono Glow – $4.80 win / $1.75 place
The filly brings arguably the strongest upward form line. She won the Listed Cap d’Antibes at Flemington over 1100m, then travelled to Sydney and beat the colts in the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes over 1200m. That last victory provides direct form over Paradoxium, and she has demonstrated both straight-course aptitude and the ability to see out this distance. From barrier four, Ben Melham can position her where the speed develops, but he will need to be alert if the field favours the opposite side of the track. The 55kg set-weight advantage over the colts is meaningful. She is the main danger and arguably the best win-value alternative to The Next Episode.
(5) St Gotthard – $4.40 win / $1.67 place
The highest-profile Sydney Group 1 form belongs to St Gotthard, who was runner-up in the Golden Rose. He has been freshened since that 1400m assignment, and the drop to 1200m should not be a problem if he can reproduce his best acceleration. James McDonald rides for Chris Waller, who has an exceptional record in this race, including a win with St Gotthard’s brother Switzerland. The question is not raw ability but how quickly he adapts to Flemington’s straight track at his first attempt. Barrier six puts him near Satono Glow, so the two may end up competing for the same part of the course. A major winning chance.
(12) Natural Fling – $6.50 win / $2.00 place
Her narrow Danehill Stakes defeat by The Next Episode reads very well. She meets that rival on favourable set-weight terms and has already handled the Flemington straight and testing ground. Damian Lane remains aboard, and barrier eight gives him scope to follow the central speed or edge wider if that is where the better going develops. At $6.50 she offers an attractive each-way profile: the gap between her and the favourite may be smaller than the market suggests, particularly on a wet track.
(2) Paradoxium – $16.00 win / $3.60 place
Won the Group 3 Poseidon Stakes down the Flemington straight before finishing fourth behind Satono Glow in the Roman Consul Stakes. His natural early speed makes him one of the important runners in the tactical picture. He can help set a genuinely-run 1200m, but the concern is whether he can sustain that speed over the final 200m against top-class closers. Barrier 13 allows Jason Collett to race towards the outside. A possible place or trifecta inclusion, especially if on-pace runners are holding up.
(14) Pembrey – $11.00 win / $2.75 place
Another filly with a 2kg weight advantage, and Craig Williams is a notable booking. She is capable of racing prominently, which gives her tactical flexibility, but she has less compelling established Group 1 form than the leading four. If the track is favouring horses close to the speed, her $11 quote becomes more interesting. She belongs in wider multiples.
(7) Under Focus – $18.00 win / $4.00 place
Blake Shinn’s booking commands attention, but barrier one could be a difficult place to start if the riders move away from the inside lanes. His ability to hold a position in the first half of the race may help; nevertheless, he needs both a step forward on form and the right track pattern to trouble the principals.
Speed map and Flemington straight-track bias
Paradoxium is likely to inject genuine pace, with Pembrey and other on-speed runners helping keep the field honest. Unlike a turning sprint, the straight six is strongly influenced by where jockeys elect to race across the width of Flemington. The Next Episode begins from the outside in barrier 14, while Satono Glow and St Gotthard are drawn much closer to the inside. There is no reliable way to declare one side advantaged before seeing how the earlier straight races unfold. Rain would add another variable. Watch the early races closely rather than assuming the outside draw is automatically superior.
Coolmore Stud Stakes 2026 betting tips
- (1) The Next Episode – $3.70 win: Top selection on proven straight-course form and a wet-track win in the Danehill.
- (13) Satono Glow – $4.80 win: Best alternative on form and price, with the fillies’ weight allowance.
- (5) St Gotthard – $4.40 win: Strongest Group 1 form, but must adapt to the straight.
- (12) Natural Fling – $6.50 win / $2.00 place: Each-way appeal after narrowly missing in the Danehill.
Betting verdict: The Next Episode is the horse to beat, but this is a competitive race and the $3.70 quote is not a gift. Satono Glow at $4.80 appeals as the main alternative because she is already a Flemington straight winner, has proven 1200m form and receives 2kg from the colts. Natural Fling at $6.50 is the more appealing each-way proposition. Include St Gotthard in quinellas and trifectas, with Paradoxium a wider exotic runner if the track is favouring speed. Reassess after the earlier straight races and any late weather changes.
