WA horse racing heads back to Ascot on Saturday for a competitive nine-race card.

Tim Geers has picked out his best bets for the meeting, highlighting four races in total.

He’s betting into Race 3 and Race 4 before his best bet comes up in Race 5, while his best value closes out the selections in Race 7.

(1) Featherweight is one of four Dan Morton runners in the race and his main rider Chris Parnham is booked for raceday, which is the obvious lead. He’s had three trials leading into his debut today. He’s been a close up 2nd in her two most recent trials, with a good gap back to 3rd, so from the inside gate today with Parnham on, I expect her to be very hard to beat.

(4) Cuballing is obviously hard to beat here but I’m going to try and get him beat.

(12) Amasenus gets Chris Parnham aboard, who jumps off one of his Dad’s horses to take the ride first up for Simon Miller. Her form is only moderate but she’s trialled well and won first up last prep. Barrier 12 is a tricky draw but I expect her to run well here.

Parnham jumps off (10) Holy Ghost and is replaced by his brother Steven, who returns to riding today. Holy Ghost was huge first up, coming from last to reel off a good final 400m. He once again draws wide and will be near the back, which is the obvious query, but I think he’s got some ability and his first up run was encouraging.

I think (4) Pletto is the best bet on what is a tricky card at Ascot. His trial was good and so was his first up run behind London Miss, which isn’t a bad form line. He’s never missed the top two from three starts when second up from a spell, including a dominant win last preparation. With even luck from the gate, I think he’s the horse to beat.

(3) Uncle Dick was a touch plain first up but I’ll be forgiving him for that. He gets a rider change and the tongue tie on for the first time. He’s a better horse than what he did first up and at the better price today, I’ll have something small on.

Quite keen on (4) Winifer running a good race at huge odds here. She ran poorly last start at Pinjarra but trainer Trevor Andrews said post-race she just didn’t handle Pinjarra at all. She returns to her home track at Ascot today and she has a great record over this track and distance, with two wins and two placings from six starts. She was a winner at the track and distance two starts ago in this same grade with just 1.5kg less, and the start prior to that she ran 2nd. If you put a line through that last run at Pinjarra, her form looks very decent for a race like this. I think she’s way over the odds.

A trip to Hong Kong quickly had Tim hooked to the racing caper, maintaining the best place anywhere in the world on a Wednesday night is Happy Valley. He holds a strong interest in the Hong Kong form, along with the metropolitan racing in Sydney and Melbourne.
