Tim Geers gives his thoughts on all eight races at Ascot on Wednesday afternoon.

ascot-racecourse

Ascot hosts its first midweek race meeting of the season on Wednesday, with an eight-race card set to kick off at 1.07pm local time (AWST).

The track has come up a Soft 5 with the rail out 9m, but with sunny weather should improve to a Good 4 at some stage of the meeting.

Tim Geers has done the form for every race and provided his racing tips below.

His best bet comes up in Race 7 and his best value bet is in Race 2.

Keen to stick with (6) Noble Born here. Has been very good in two career runs to date and looked to bump into a smart one in Devoted last start at Northam. Looks to find the front fairly easily here and is going to take plenty of catching.

(3) Buzzoom hasn’t done much wrong but has had her fair share of opportunities to win again since her debut victory.

(1) Green And Shady and (5) English Bay look up against it.

(4) Beloved Star went down at $1.28 at Northam last start. We are getting a much better price today with even money available but I’ll be betting around him again here. He draws a tricky barrier 7 and there is absolutely no speed on paper.

(6) Mahaleo drops out of Saturday grade back to the midweeks and now carries just 53kg after the claim. Inside draw today and no speed in the race, so I’d be very surprised if we didn’t see them more positive here. Can win with luck.

(2) Kolchino costs himself by jumping away awfully slowly. He’s been very poor out of the gates in all of his trials and his only start in a race. He reeled off the fastest final 400m and 200m in defeat last start so if McGruddy can get him to jump at all, he’ll be a live chance in this.

(9) Reel Safe might roll forward from the wide gate today.

Tip: (6) Mahaleo $3.80 Bet365

Value: (2) Kolchino $9.00 Bet365

Betting Strategy: 1 unit WIN Mahaleo, 0.5 units WIN Kolchino

(9) I’m A Dreamer was OK in his first two starts before copping a fair bit of interference last start, so happy to forgive him for that. Draws the inside today and finds a very winnable race.

(10) Aztec Gold was good first up and should improve out of that race. The winner has since won again so the form has stacked up.

(4) Meritia gets up in trip third up from a spell so should be ready to show something today.

(3) Hear Me next best.

Happy to sit out of this one.

Going to bet the drift here on (4) Zadar Rock. He trialled the house down leading into his debut but didn’t fire a shot, however pulled up with an issue. Bounced back in style last start, bolting in to win by more than 3L. The horse that ran 2nd then came out and won. Should lead and take catching.

(2) Savanik won her first two starts this prep before a midfield finish in the Ladies Day Cup at Northam last start. Finds an easier race today, draws well and should be very hard to beat.

(1) Beanie has returned from the freshen up in very good form.

(6) Night Session and (7) Golden Bonney two to throw in at big odds.

Impossible race.

(1) Mong Khon should have finished closer last start but ran into traffic wherever he went in the straight. Slightly awkward draw here with some speed drawn underneath but with even luck should be thereabouts.

(2) Antique Jewel goes from 1300m straight up to 1800m with the blinkers back on. Not convinced its any good though.

(6) There’s A Thought won well last start and can be competitive once again but goes from Chris Parnham to Keshaw Dhurun and draws awkwardly. Could be three-wide.

(7) Tibetan Black also draws wide but can go either forward or back and isn’t hopeless after a good run without much luck last start.

(8) Fairdelicious a complete blowout at huge odds.

Surely today is the day for (8) Standout Rose. She was completely unsuited first up when the track was completely biased to those on speed and on the rail. She copped a similar track last start and still ran home strongly for 2nd, with the winner sneaking up along the inside on the better ground. Third up now, hpefully a much fairer track at Ascot, should go very close.

(6) Mantelli should improve from the first up run and gets the senior jockey on second up today. At his best he’d be very competitive in a race like this.

(9) Pastry had no luck at all last start at Kalgoorlie when badly held up in the straight. Pike keeps the ride so will be keen to make amends and at double figure odds he appeals as some value.

(2) Gates Of Babylon has a terrific record at this track and distance with three wins from four starts. Hasn’t raced in Wednesday grade for a long time so if he’s at his best, he’d be the horse to beat without doubt. Will need some luck from the inside barrier with the 3kg apprentice booked though.

The seven weeks between runs and the big betting drift is cause for concern with (10) Mystery Moment but I’m just going to bank on her being the best horse in the race. She was very heavily backed on debut at Pinjarra and showed a good turn of foot when she eventually got clear running. Not sure she did much but she won with a bit in hand I think.

(1) Cross Statement resumes from a spell with blinkers back on for apprentice Holly Watson. Should go straight to the front and will take some catching.

(12) Rebelzone was good winning on debut at Kalgoorlie and can measure up for sure.

Will take Betfair SP for Mystery Moment.

A trip to Hong Kong quickly had Tim hooked to the racing caper, maintaining the best place anywhere in the world on a Wednesday night is Happy Valley. He holds a strong interest in the Hong Kong form, along with the metropolitan racing in Sydney and Melbourne. He’s a fan of dry tracks, Zac Purton and takes particular interest in identifying patterns in the form. Tim wears many hats, juggling the roles of form analyst, jockey manager and racehorse owner.
