I think David Harrison has a two-year-old with some ability here in the form of (9) Oh Sophia, who ran one of the best 5^th’s you will see first up behind Astrape. She bombed the start by two or three lengths and then worked home really strongly between runners under limited pressure in the straight. She ran the second-fastest final 400m and 200m of the race. She was one of only five runners from the entire meeting to break 23 seconds for her final 400m. Gets the ear muffs on pre-race today, which hopefully keeps her more settled and allows her to jump out of the gates better. If she does, she’ll be very hard to hold out here at each way odds.

(14) The Velvet Queen is the sister to The Velvet King, who is an absolute swimmer. He won his debut by 6L at a similar stage of the year on a rain-affected track at Belmont, so if she is anything like him, she will give this a real shake.

The $1.80 for (3) Zaratite looks about right, he looks incredibly hard to beat. His first up run was sensational, finishing half-a-length off Naughty By Nature, who then went on to win the Strickland Stakes. That was his first run for 93 weeks and he should improve considerably off that. Handles wet ground, goes very well here and should be winning.

(6) Searchin’ Roc’s ran the best 5^th you will ever see on debut, where she raced very greenly and had no luck at all in the straight. We followed her off that run and she came out and saluted at double figure odds last start, racing much more professionally and scoring very impressively. She gets a good draw today and can win again – she looks to have plenty of talent. Heavy track a clear unknown but that applies to most here.

(1) Vane Tempest is absolutely airborne this prep, with three wins and a 0.02L defeat to Timely Outburst. Goes up a couple of kilos for her victory over track and distance last start, but she handles wet ground, draws well and makes her own luck. She’ll be very hard to beat again.

(2) Ay Tee Emm was backed from enormous odds into $6.00 last start and absolutely towelled his rivals down the straight at Pinjarra, which followed up a very good trial. He looks to be kept to sprinting trips this time in after getting out to 2200m last prep. He’s so far struggled here at Belmont but he loves the wet ground and off that first up win, has to be respected.

Decent amount of speed in this, which should set it up for Simon Miller’s two runners settling back in the field.

(7) Miss Conteki suffered her second career defeat last start at the ands of Long Beach, who she meets again here. Hard to knock her record and Pike goes on today with Parnham choosing to go with the stablemate. With the likes of Mervyn in the race, this could be run at a brutal speed, which she should appreciate.

(5) Amasenus continues to drift in betting and continues to win. She’s now won six straight and the pre-race drift has already begun, with her currently as much as $6.50. She just continues to raise the bar and she’s another that will appreciate the tempo here. Parnham chooses to stick with her over Miss Conteki as he believes she will be better on heavy ground. Will be backing her at Betfair SP, expecting her to continue to drift.

I typically hate horses stepping up sharply in distance (more than 400m) but I’m going to stick with (7) Arnie’s Boy here, who goes from 1400m to 2100m. This horse has had the least luck of any horse in WA. His last four starts read: four-wide the trip, held up for majority of straight, three-wide the trip, and too far back. Draws wide again today which isn’t ideal as he’s likely to be a mile off them, but Parnham sticks, he has a decent record on wet ground and he’s racing like he needs ground. Small each way.

Playing two at big odds here.

(1) Costa Del Santo carries top weight here but his return from a spell was very good and he bounced off a similar run last prep to win easily second up. Goes well on rain-affected ground, goes well at the distance and just needs some luck from the wide draw.

(7) Miss Maranta was our best bet last Wednesday and saluted after drifting out to $12. She is flying this prep, every single run has been a beauty. She ran the fastest final 400m of the meeting when winning last week and her win had to be seen to be believed. The obvious query is whether she is up to this grade as it’s a steep rise in class, but she deserves her chance and at $31 today, I have to go again.

Looks a very good chance again today (4) Puli, who loves it here at Belmont and loves the wet tracks. He’s got four wins and a 2^nd from five starts at the track and distance and had to carry 62kg last start. Now drops back to 55.5kg with the rise in grade and should find the front and be hard to run down.

(9) Comes A Time is racing very well, just doesn’t get a lot of luck. Ran 2^nd to Amasenus two starts ago and then sat three-wide the trip when beaten 0.35L by the same horse last start. Needs some luck from barrier 11 but looks the danger.
