Tuesday racing takes us to Benalla in regional Victoria. ‘The Horse’ has found the better bets on the program, including one at $51.00. He has profiled Race 1, Race 2, Race 3 and Race 4.

There isn’t much exposed form to go on here, so the jump-out form looks the obvious reference guide. (3) Thorogood has been the most impressive winning a jump-out leading in, and despite the short price he has already found some early market support. He is also nominated for a couple of races on Thursday, but this looks the easiest of them. Interestingly, he is also nominated for the Kennedy Australia Guineas, so the stable must of some genuine expectation (given, so are around 100 other horses).

The short priced favourite (2) All Of Brighten goes around here at unbackable odds. For me, this a maiden with too many unknowns to be taking the $1.45. All Of Brighten ran on well in his first start, albeit beaten by 5 lengths by a handy horse, and may have the wood on the majority of these. But he didn’t start great, and a repeat of that performance and he’ll find himself in a sticky spot with plenty of work to do. If you had to stake your life on one, than yes, he’s the top pick. However, I am looking for something at each-way value.

In that same race (6) Turn Back Time went around at $81, and ended up running seventh. He jumped well, but over-raced burning his chances early on. Despite this, he then ran 3-4 wide the trip and showed a little in the straight. Unfortunately he had very little left and dropped right out. If he jumps well from the inside draw, has taken some experience and can settle, he can improve. It’s speculative, but at $51 today happy to have something small on him.

The Patrick Payne runner (4) Wine O Clock was an on-top selection for us first-up at Warrnambool. This followed two handy jump-out wins. In that start he closed well from sixth in running to get the silver medal. It was by 3 lengths, but the winner Setanta did get a good run in transit and looked to have some potential. In his defense, it was first-up over 1400 metres, and sticking to that distance second-up is a positive (with assumed improved fitness).

His main competition (13) Unhinched is drawn alongside him—6 starts for 3 places, he has been around the mark without winning. But it doesn’t end there, with (2) Redollix in contention. This may turn out to be a nice form race.

It’s unusual not to have a Price/Kent runner in the top selections, so it’s no surprise to see (5) Bury Road heading the market here. Michael Walker takes the ride and draws a favourable gate. There looks to be plenty of speed so he might attempt to kick-up and lead on the inside, or risk getting buried deep along the fence. The query is the slight step up in distance to 2000 metres after fading out last time, and I would have liked to see him stick to around the 1700-1800 metres.

This is less about Bury Road, and more about the lack of competition. I simply can’t make much of a case for anything else.

The Horse

The Horse found the thought of placing bets and drinking beers much more appealing once he was married, and that led to an interest in the many intricacies of The Great Game. He enjoys the challenge of predicting what will happen in any given race, but also loves horses themselves, none more so than the mighty mudlark Jungle Edge. His focus lies on metropolitan racing in Victoria and NSW, however isn’t afraid to find one out wide. Away from racing, The Horse is an avid drummer – quite a difficult task with a set of hooves.
