This is Matthew Dale’s race to lose. His two runners are both capable of winning with (1) Antilles quite short in the market at $1.85, while (3) Clem Fandango offering up to $8. Antilles has been good in this grade the last two starts, placing second on both occasions. Last start it was also over the 2000 metres which he contests again today. He isn’t really a winner though, with 1 win from 16 starts, and the 4 minors. Some of his best racing is back here in Canberra, so he has to be taken seriously. Three starts back he faced a BM88 in Randwick, which was a stretch. My one query is that he is untested on the Heavy. If the race commences and the track is Heavy, I’ll be having something on last start winner (7) The Boomerang at $41 each-way.

Pretty happy to have (5) Manila Thriller on top first-up after a lengthy break. She has had 7 starts for 1 win & 4 places, and admittedly does her best work second-up, but comes from an astute local trainer and has trailed well coming in. The inside draw is a positive, and she is likely to settle in the top three. From there, expect her to drive late and at even money for the place, you could be forgiven taking her each-way.

(2) Brothers Of Antrim is the danger after a nice first-up win, and if he improves, Manila Thriller may just need to accept running a place.

This race will be influenced by the track condition—noting my top selection (6) War Deck has not shown any ability on Soft or Heavy tracks. To complicate matters, there is absolutely no pace in this field, so it’ll be a grind to the line. On even terms War Deck does look well placed to improve and succeed in this grade, with all starts this preparation quite handy. However with the track likely to be a disadvantage, I am looking elsewhere.

(8) Mandalong Nicko is one who has shown some ability in the conditions, and is generally in the top few every time. Placed twice on Heavy, with the single win also on Soft, the biggest query is the grade. However that’s the case for most of them here, so oddly enough it evens out. (4) Kanerupt is the other one with some wet form, and has raced in this grade with some success. At double figure odds, a nice little each-way saver.

The Horse

The Horse found the thought of placing bets and drinking beers much more appealing once he was married, and that led to an interest in the many intricacies of The Great Game. He enjoys the challenge of predicting what will happen in any given race, but also loves horses themselves, none more so than the mighty mudlark Jungle Edge. His focus lies on metropolitan racing in Victoria and NSW, however isn’t afraid to find one out wide. Away from racing, The Horse is an avid drummer – quite a difficult task with a set of hooves.
