The early races are of mixed quality today, with a couple of real shorties going around. This race has one of the shorties in (1) Mandalong Roman, but at the $1.60 he may be worth including into some multiples. He was racing in fine form in Gosford, getting two wins on the trot, before an unmemorable run at Canterbury. Every chance he can bounce back. Outside of him, it’s tough, so taking the favourite as a stand-out.

This is a really open affair, which means there are some good prices on offer. I am pretty keen to play something small on a couple. (3) Athena’s Lad has had 8 starts for 3 wins and 2 places. He has been very consistent in the country meetings, racing in the BM66 grade. This is his pet distance, but there is a huge query on the wide gate. It can be tough to come from the back of the field and win at Cowra under 1400 metres, so the map alone is enough to ruin his chances. If everything works out perfectly, he has a shot at them. The one who will be leading is (7) Larynx and he gets a real good shot at stealing this from in front. His racing is inconsistent to say the least, so it’s a genuine gamble whether he gets to the line without fading.

Another get-back horse is (1) Renalot who has been racing in the toughest company. He has competed in BM70 at Randwick and placed in Canberra behind the likes of Nieces And Nephews. He draws towards this inside, but due to the lack of speed outside the aforementioned, Cahill should be able to land in a nice spot. Not the greatest record first-up, you would still expect the stable to be ready for this one. Great each-way value.

The Japan Cup, named after the historical Cowra Breakout, is a complete dart job! There is a fair degree of speed in the brace where a number of the runners are going to be fighting for early position. (8) Tessera may be the one to get it. He has been racing well without winning, and with an overall record of 40 starts for 3 wins, happy to risk him today. (3) I Am Captain is the favourite after a nice win at Gilgandra, prior to he was competing in the Highway at Randwick coming seventh behind Remlap Gems. His best has been at country level (BM66) which indicates he’s in with a great shot today, but not sure he deserves favouritism.

The one which, for me, looks like he should be favourite is (2) Up Trumpz. A veteran now of 41 starts; he has only 5 wins but 16 places. Always gives a solid effort, but hasn’t set the timing board alight in any recent memory. He has been clearly running in the best company, consistently running in BM78 at metro tracks, his 2^nd to Dirty Work at Randwick is the highlight. He gets a sticky gate, where he’ll naturally need some luck in running.

The Cowra Cup is run over 1700 metres. And it is tough to be against the two favourites in the market (3) Royal Thunder and (1) Upper House.

The Matthew Dale trained Royal Thunder comes here after a win at Canberra where he ran his rivals into the ground. He carried more weight than he does today, and drops back from 2000 metres. He is going to come across and sit alongside the leader, and potentially take it if it’s on offer. He does step up in grade however and meets a better field. The Cowra track is a handy one to be leading or on-pace. There is a query on the little freshen up—not sure that’s suited. The last start win was on the quick back-up.

Two starts back Royal Thunder placed second behind Wyangle, who races in Wangaratta today (and is favourite). He was beaten by 0.5 lengths over the 1660 metres, which saw Wyangle then take on Upper House at Wagga. Upper House swamped him late in an impressive victory. The slight jump in distance looks a positive. You’d be forgiven for thinking that lines up Upper House to beat Royal Thunder.

This comes down to the run—it looks like Royal Thunder may need to work hard to get the lead. That will allow Upper House to sit in behind from his handy gate, and he will be closer in running than last start when he swamped them. This will give Upper House the upper hand, and I think he’ll prove too good. They should be equal in the market, but you’re getting over twice the price for Upper Hand.

The Horse

The Horse found the thought of placing bets and drinking beers much more appealing once he was married, and that led to an interest in the many intricacies of The Great Game. He enjoys the challenge of predicting what will happen in any given race, but also loves horses themselves, none more so than the mighty mudlark Jungle Edge. His focus lies on metropolitan racing in Victoria and NSW, however isn’t afraid to find one out wide. Away from racing, The Horse is an avid drummer – quite a difficult task with a set of hooves.
