It is a pretty measly 5 horse race to commence the day, so we head straight to Race 2. This appears to be a race of two, with (6) Apres La Mer showing some ability in her last two starts this preparation. Both were over 1200 metres and she drops back today—which looks a good decision. She is a pretty fast starter and we can expect her to push across from the wider gate. She is a risk of burning too much early.

The one looking to take advantage of this will be (3) Exceed Tycoon. Proving costly, she has placed her first two starts after being a short priced favourite. Is today the day? She looks like she may drop in behind the first couple, and with even luck she should be able to give Apres La Mer the same treatment she got last time. Top selection.

We have a bigger field here to consider over the 1590 metres. The early favourite (1) Billie De Lune for Maher/Eustace has been pretty consistent and is unlucky not to have chalked up the maiden win. Dean Holland gets the ride for the first time, but not sure whether that’s the key to victory. Still, she needs to be included on all exotics.

The other runner in the market is (8) Shy Girl who has now placed three runs this preparation. She has a similar story to Billie De Lune, and is unlucky to have not yet won a maiden. Last start was her best run—she dropped back before circling the field and really showing some quality fight in the final stages. The winner was a nice Price/Kent runner who got a peach from Newitt—but if she runs to that standard again, she should be right in the finish.

This is a tough race, but I like the odds on offer for (7) Grade Zero. The Dabernig/Hayes All Too Hard gelding goes up in grade but stays at the track & distance he won at last start. He was a deserved favourite that day, and won by around a length. It wasn’t electric, but it was a good win—and with increased fitness and race experience, he could be right in the mix again today. Daniel Stackhouse maintains the ride which is a positive, and despite drawing a wide gate he does map to come across into a mid-field position. At an each-way premise, happy to take him on top as a Value Bet.

(3) Single Crown won last start by the slimmest of margins against an average field, but can improve. While (2) Outlandos has been racing in the best company, albeit not entirely setting things alight.

The short priced favourite (13) Kiata was only nutted by a head to come second last start. She did a few things wrong, but was lengths ahead of the remainder of the field. Gets another decent draw, droops in weight, and maintains the services of Patrick Maloney. She is going to be tough to get past.

The one at odds who could turn up fresh is (1) Yeldarb. The McCarthy yard have two in this race, the other is (2) Ashtrain, and both have a great chance. Yeldarb ended last preparation in BM84 grade, much tougher than this lot. He goes well fresh, gets the 4kg claim to offset the weight, and races well at this course (2 from 2). The only query for me is the Good track, as he loves the muck.

Ashtrain on the other hand loves the Good conditions, and gets everything that suits today. He ran second to Japery last start that went on to donkey-lick them yesterday in the first at Flemington. Anything close to following that form is good enough here.

The Horse

The Horse found the thought of placing bets and drinking beers much more appealing once he was married, and that led to an interest in the many intricacies of The Great Game. He enjoys the challenge of predicting what will happen in any given race, but also loves horses themselves, none more so than the mighty mudlark Jungle Edge. His focus lies on metropolitan racing in Victoria and NSW, however isn’t afraid to find one out wide. Away from racing, The Horse is an avid drummer – quite a difficult task with a set of hooves.
