Happy Valley Racing Tips: Wednesday, June 2nd

Hong Kong horse racing heads to the city circuit at Happy Valley on Wednesday evening and Tim Geers has highlighted four races he’s keen to bet in.

Hong Kong horse racing heads to the city circuit at Happy Valley on Wednesday evening, where a nine-race card is set to kick off at 6.45pm local time.

Tonight’s meeting is on the A-course at the Valley (rail in the true position), with inside barrier draws normally favoured.

Tim Geers has highlighted four races on the card he’s keen to bet in: Race 2, Race 4, Race 5 and Race 6.

We’ll kick our night off here in the second race, where we’ll be backing Moreira and Purton who ride the top two weighted horses in the race.

(1) Happy Good Guys drops in class from class 3 to class 4, and it catches the eye that Joao gets on for trainer Ricky Yiu just as this horse drops in grade. He goes well over this track and distance and with any luck from the wide draw, he can be competitive at each way odds. In his last three runs in this grade, the horse has run two 2nds and a 1st.

(2) Amazing Rocky ran 2nd over this track and distance last start and comes up with barrier 1 tonight, which is a big plus over the 1000m at Happy Valley on the A course. Has won a barrier trial here at Happy Valley since his last start and he should be going close.

Notably, Karis Teetan is off Amazing Rocky and onto the John Size debutant (4) Colassale which has been backed in early markets, so no surprise to see a good run from him.

Good race.

(2) Regency Master was beaten a short head here both two and three starts ago, and he had little luck last time out when he was held up for the first half of the straight. He’s had some tricky draws to overcome in his past three starts, but he comes up with a plum gate in barrier 4 tonight, so I’ll give him one more chance.

(7) Ernest Feeling makes his Happy Valley debut after four starts at Sha Tin. He’s been fairly good there, so I suspect he’s going to be a big player in this. He ran home well from off the speed two starts ago before they elected to lead with him from the wide gate last start. He faded into 5th but that was a decent race. From barrier 5 I doubt they’ll try to lead here and I think he’s going to be right in the finish.

(1) Dream Warriors has placed in his past four starts and comes out of the same race as Regency Master. Drawn terribly tonight but he still looks a big price for a horse that’s knocking on the door.

Moreira goes on (9) On Excel Star who he’s ridden in two trials leading into tonight. I would be very wary of that runner given this set up. No surprise to see him win at double figure odds.

Will be backing Regency Master and Dream Warriors, and saving on Ernest Feeling.

Keen on the two top weights again here.

(1) Harrier Jet drops in class and gets Purton on straight away. This is a set up we’ve seen multiple times before. His last win was over this track and distance in this grade with Purton on board, and he ran 2nd three starts ago when he dropped into this class with Purton on. With the good draw, there’s no reason he can’t go close here.

(2) Jazz Steed was beaten 2L here over this track and distance last start after drawing the outside gate. Back in January he carried this exact weight with this same jockey on board over this track and distance, and was beaten a short-half-head. Should go well.

Keen on (1) Fast Pace here. He’s never far away; he’s placed in nine of his past 12 starts. His last win came over over 1650m here at Happy Valley in this class, and he drops back into Class 4 for the first time since February. He’s placed three times in class 3 since then, and to place in higher class before dropping down makes you a massive chance of winning when you do. Drawn well, should be very hard to beat.

I’m also happy to have something on (6) Rainbow Light. He placed in successive races here before enduring a tough run last start. Purton goes on tonight, replacing Karis Teetan, and with any luck he should be hitting the line hard. Looks a live chance at $7.50.

Tim Geers

A trip to Hong Kong quickly had Tim hooked to the racing caper, maintaining the best place anywhere in the world on a Wednesday night is Happy Valley. He holds a strong interest in the Hong Kong form, along with the metropolitan racing in Sydney and Melbourne. He’s a fan of dry tracks, Zac Purton and takes particular interest in identifying patterns in the form. Tim wears many hats, juggling the roles of form analyst, jockey manager and racehorse owner.
