The short-priced favourite (5) Mystic Journey meets (1) Blaze Forth again after they made up the quinella in their last start. That was a tactical little race (with only 5 runners) which is pretty similar to what we can expect today, albeit with 7 runners. Mystic Journey, trained by the astute Adam Trinder, was extremely short in the market that day and was subsequently beaten by Blaze Forth. It was a strong effort by Blaze Forth, but I don’t expect Luke Currie to follow the same tactics, and she can turn the tables. The main threat to her is (2) Newhart, who has been extremely consistent with 13 starts for 6 wins & 5 places. Craig Newitt stays with her as she comes back onto the turf after a few starts on synthetic.

It is pretty hard to go against the unbeaten (2) Hela from the Scott Brunton stable. We tipped her successfully in the 1000 Guineas, at a better price than we are getting today, and I am happy to take the short odds again in my multiples. She does step up in distance today from the 1600 to 2100 metres; however there has been nothing to suggest she will not handle the distance. In the Guineas she won by 4 lengths showing absolutely no respect for her rivals, and if she runs anywhere near that way today she wins. (1) Chequerboard comes across from Victoria where she was last competing in a BM70 at Flemington. She can be in the minor places.

This is a great edition of the Hobart Cup with plenty of winning chances. Many of these runners competed against each other last start in the Summer Cup. (11) White Hawk won that contest paying $101, and starts here much shorter. He gets another handy draw today and will attempt similar tactics saving ground along the fence.

(12) Sir Simon is likely to cross him and take the lead in running—while this is a big step up in class for Sir Simon, he did show plenty of ability and could sneak away from a few of them. He is one for the minors.

Of the runners that chased White Hawk that day, it was (2) Mandela Effect that looked the most likely to catch him. He was swamping him late but missed by a head on the line. Another 10 metres and the race was his. If he runs up to that performance he is going to be tough to beat today, and the step up to 2400 metres is a positive. I cannot see White Hawk getting away with it again. (4) Toorak Affair is the other one who ran well and can further improve today. This race looks to be between the two of them (so if you’re playing the quinella that’s where you can look). (9) Glass Warrior similarly cannot be ignored.

The well-travelled (6) Barade comes across from the mainland after come nice runs in Geelong, Moonee Valley & Eagle Farm. Consistently performing at the BM90 grade, he is going to make his presence felt.

The one at huge odds that can be right in the finish is (15) Super Swoop, currently offered at around $81. A significant step up in grade, but racing in good form, carrying no weight and gets a nice little inside gate. As his name suggests, he’ll attempt to swoop them, but his best results are on Heavy tracks.

The Horse

The Horse found the thought of placing bets and drinking beers much more appealing once he was married, and that led to an interest in the many intricacies of The Great Game. He enjoys the challenge of predicting what will happen in any given race, but also loves horses themselves, none more so than the mighty mudlark Jungle Edge. His focus lies on metropolitan racing in Victoria and NSW, however isn’t afraid to find one out wide. Away from racing, The Horse is an avid drummer – quite a difficult task with a set of hooves.
