Randwick Racing Tips: Saturday, August 7th

Tim Geers previews the first NSW metro meeting of the new season at Randwick on Saturday, headlined by the G2 Missile Stakes.

randwick-racing

The first NSW metro meeting of the new season takes place from headquarters in Sydney, with 10 races at Randwick.

We enter a tough betting period over the next couple of weeks, with several Spring stars emerging from their breaks, taking on horses that have been racing over the winter.

We’ve been racing on wet tracks in recent weeks but the Randwick surface should be rated in the Good range on Saturday, with the rail out 5m.

The meeting is headlined by The Rosebud and the G2 Missile Stakes.

Tim Geers has previewed every race on the card below with his tips and best bets.

Best Bet: Race 4 – (9) Loveplanet

Best Value: Race 5 – (10) Savvy Crown

(2) Diamonds’n’stones went into the list of horses to follow after his first up run at Randwick. He was first up on a heavy track over an unsuitable trip, and he had to do a bit of work to sit outside the leader. I thought he stuck on well and there was plenty of merit in his effort. The step up in trip is a positive (he’s undefeated at this distance) and so is the firm track. He may just need one more run, but happy to back him in any case.

(5) Toomuchtobear is the value at $7.50. He’s been racing in Melbourne and now comes to Sydney but the form out of his recent races continues to stand up. The horses that ran 2nd and 3rd behind him last start then came out and ran the quinella at their next starts, with the winner belting them by 5L. That same horse then came out and won again. The horse that ran 4th to Toomuchtobear also won his next start. I suspect from the gate they go back, and this is a step up in class, but I think he’s a touch over the odds.

(9) Larkspur Run resumed with a good win at Canterbury but has never raced on a firm track which is a slight query.

(4) Hot Spring Gold keeps JMac and was a good run two starts back.

He has to give a stack of weight away but (1) Harpo Marx is quite clearly the one they have to beat here. Gets a huge jockey change today with James McDonald booked to replace Tom Sherry, with the stable electing to carry the full 62.5kg. Back onto firm ground should suit and from the inside draw, I’d be disappointed if he landed at the back of the field again. He was ridden very negatively last start and was still huge in defeat, and his win two starts back was super.

We could see sharp improvement from (3) Master Shuhood fourth run back today back onto firm ground. His record in the wet is poor so no surprise to see him show something at $31 today.

(4) Terwilliker and (8) Percuniary Interest next best, with the latter carrying a whopping 12kg less than the topweight.

Surely this is the race (8) Birdonawinningpost has been set for. She’s had two runs back from a spell, both in Highways over 1400m and 1500m on wet tracks. Now gets up to 1800m third up, draws a gate and gets back onto firm ground. She won over this track and distance at the end of last prep so if she’s going to show something, this will be where.

(9) Zoo Station won a Highway first up at Rosehill and has been luckless in two starts since. Two starts ago settled near last and was just left with too much to do, and then last start she was held up for the majority of the straight. Draws an awful gate here but with any luck goes close.

(15) Dream Runner gets the blinkers on for the first time after being beaten by a nose last start. JMac sticks, just has to overcome the draw.

Four Waller runners going around here, so who knows which one will bob up and win.

(9) Loveplanet looks the obvious choice with JMac on. He’s won three of his four career starts and kicked off his preparation with a win at Sandown. He’s been back to the trials as Waller typically does with his horses and the only issue will be overcoming the awkward draw.

(7) Re Edit has a good first up record with two wins and two 2nds from six starts. Was a big run first up last prep, and should have won first up the prep before that. Hasn’t raced in Sydney for a while but has trialled twice here leading into today. Bowman on, good draw, will go close.

What do we do with (2) Great House? Looked completely gone last start but then stayed on OK through the line. That was over 1800m, now drops back to 1500m which is the distance he won over first up. Back on firm ground for the first time this prep, but draws wide and gets the apprentice on. Anyone’s guess as to what he dishes up.

(6) Invinciano really appreciated returning to firm ground last start. Jumped to the lead and never looked like getting beat. That was at the midweeks and this is a tougher race, but she gets conditions to suit.

(10) Savvy Crown looks a decent each way price here, even though I vowed to never bet in Highways or Midways again. Won first up and then was narrowly beaten in a similar race last start. Is undefeated third up from a spell and the return to a firm track is no problems. Should go well at $8.50.

Plenty of other chances in these typically open races.

Open race.

(4) More Prophets was well backed first up last prep but bumped into Lost And Running, which obviously looks a very strong form reference. She was a winner first up the prep before that. She’s placed in five of her six starts on good ground, gets Kerrin McEvoy booked straight away and draws well in barrier 4. No reason she shouldn’t be in the top three here.

(7) Irish Angel is banging on the door for another win. She saluted first up at Canterbury with JMac aboard, and then ran consecutive 2nds with Bowman on. She had no luck last start, sitting three-wide the trip without cover. Any luck today and she goes very close again.

Bowman sticks with (2) Starla who he rode to victory last start. Draws well again and should be competitive.

(10) Eight Diamonds won well first up and then started $4.40 last start when failing. Pulled up coughing out of that race so probably a legitimate excuse there. Awkward draw but Berry sticks and has to be respected off her starting price last start.

I think (1) Kolding is the best horse in the race here, so at the prices I’ll be backing him. He gets his favoured firm ground today and although his fresh record isn’t terrific, I think he’s good enough to take care of this lot.

(2) Viridine brings race fitness and he’s had two nice barrier trials at his past two starts in Melbourne. Damien Oliver hasn’t ridden him well, so if he’s actually put into the race today, fitness will get him a long way.

(7) Fasika has a great fresh record with three wins from five starts. She draws the inside and will be right up on the pace. Query is whether she is up to beating the likes of Kolding.

(4) Riodini is the blowout – forgive his failures on heavy ground, should be much better suited on firm footing.

Great little race but not an easy betting affair.

(3) Remarque stamped himself as a good colt when dominating on debut back in January. Failed behind Profiteer at his second start but did start a solid $5.50 chance and his two trials leading into today have been good. Draws the inside, Berry booked, plenty to like.

(4) Sky Command has done nothing wrong at all in her first two starts, winning both easily. She’s yet to do it on firm ground though, which has to be the query here, but she’ll jump and run and be tough to chase down again.

(1) Paulele was dominant last time we saw him and JMac is booked first up which is a positive lead.

(5) Maotai is the X-factor in the race but he needs to behave himself pre-race and in the barriers.

Tricky race.

(3) Enfleurage resumes from more than a year off the track after failing in two starts last preparation. Form prior to that was very good and she’s had three trials in readiness for today, with JMac booked to ride. If she returns at her best, she’ll be right in the mix.

(2) Hulk was ridden back last start and just failed to get into the race at any stage. Back onto firmer ground today should bring about improvement but he’s a hard horse to catch.

(4) Fastconi is flying but she has had her birthday in her two recent starts. She won’t enjoy the same sort of run from barrier 9 here.

(7) Sixgun was backed off the map last start and scrambled in, but did sit wide throughout. Draws a sticky gate once more.

(11) Kingsheir is a horse I’ve always had a bit of time for and he resumes as a gelding today after nearly a year off the track. His first trial was good, his second a little harder to read but trusting he’s going well based on that first one. He also didn’t have any gear on in the trials but gets winkers on for race day. Draws well, should be hard to beat.

(3) Handspun looks a decent price at $9.00 second up after a decent first up run where she didn’t get much luck. She might well be best suited next start but she is suited by the conditions today and looks a touch over the odds.

(1) Academy draws well for his return. Has to carry some weight though.

(2) Blondeau goes from barrier 1 with T Berry to barrier 10 with Brock Ryan. Also goes from heavy ground to good, so there are some queries with him here.

(4) Tycoonist needs to overcome the draw but should be in the mix.

Tip: (11) Kingsheir $3.75 Bet365

Value: (3) Handspun $9.00 TAB

Betting Strategy: 1 unit WIN Kingsheir, 0.5 units WIN Handspun

A trip to Hong Kong quickly had Tim hooked to the racing caper, maintaining the best place anywhere in the world on a Wednesday night is Happy Valley. He holds a strong interest in the Hong Kong form, along with the metropolitan racing in Sydney and Melbourne. He’s a fan of dry tracks, Zac Purton and takes particular interest in identifying patterns in the form. Tim wears many hats, juggling the roles of form analyst, jockey manager and racehorse owner.
