Scone Racing Tips: Friday, May 14th

It’s Scone Cup Day and Billy Bestford has found the best bets across a cracking day of racing.

It’s Scone Cup day and there is a cracking eight-race meeting to get us warmed up for the weekend. The track is currently rated a soft 5 and the rail is in the true position. Fine weather has been predicted so we could see an upgrade through the day and be racing on a good track.

The highlights of the day include the Coolmore Dark Jewel Classic in Race 6, while the feature race of the day is of course the Darley Scone Cup which is Race 7 on the program.

Thought (2) Flying Finch was good first up down in Victoria. Plenty to like off the back of that, will roll forward and be hard fit here today. Like the fact the stable has brought him interstate, which gives off the impression the horse is going well.

(4) Fanz makes his debut on his home track after looking good in two recent trials. The booking of Berry tells me the stable means business and he wouldn’t shock here.

(1) Prince Invincible went close to breaking through fresh for the new stable. Can be up on speed and take some catching.

(8) O’Mudgee won’t know himself down in the weights here today. Has been super consistent all prep and drops 6.5kg from a last start 2nd over this trip. Hoping he can roll forward from the gate and give a strong kick.

(2) Total Recall returns to his home track where he has a strong record. Looks primed to strike 3rd up but will need luck from the gate.

(4) Sneak Preview looks ready for the 1400m here 4th up. Finally draws a barrier today and will be flying late.

High quality race here for the Dark Jewel and I’m siding with (12) More Prophets who looks suited to 1400m 2nd up. She bumped into the very smart Lost And Running when fresh and was doing her best work late there. Clark will have options from barrier 5 and should be able to camp in behind the speed and peel off them in the straight.

(14) Strawb can run a race at a big price. It just depends what Strawb decides to show up. Has always shown plenty of talent and returned to racing with a big win last start over 1200m. Will only be fitter here and looks over the odds.

(4) Air To Air continues to go back in her races and rattle home to catch the eye. Strike rate is a concern but is in good form.

(5) Asiago been given a freshen up and can always pull out a good 1st up run. Next best.

We come to the feature race of the day with the Darley Scone Cup. It’s a capacity field of 16 and there looks a few key chances.

Pretty certain that today could be the day for (5) Royal Celebration. Has been bursting to win one of these country cups and went very close last start over this trip. Finished less than a length off Rocha Clock and Nudge two back and now looks primed for this 4th up.

(9) Laure Me In absolutely flies 2nd up and put the writing on the wall with a very good run when 4th in that same Randwick race behind Royal Celebration. Will be hard to hold out.

(1) Purple Sector doesn’t look the same horse as he was a couple of preps ago but looks to be building to a peak performance. Looks a chance here.

I like (14) Pandano out to the mile. Was only narrowly beaten in the country championships final over 1400m and is a model of consistency. Front running and tough. Likeable combination.

Billy Bestford

Billy has been an avid racing fan ever since he and a few mates started a punters club once they turned 18. Following the initial punters clubs, he was properly hooked after landing a nice collect on Admire Rakti in the 2014 Caulfield Cup and has had a soft spot for Japanese horses ever since. Is a massive fan of 'blinkers first time' and has been known to enjoy a 'Hail Mary' multi. Loves punting across metro Sydney and Melbourne every Saturday but isn't scared to venture West late in the day to find a Pikey special.
