Hong Kong racing heads to Sha Tin on Sunday afternoon for a 10-race card on the B-course.

Tim Geers has previewed the card and highlighted his best bets for the day, which come up in Race 1, Race 3, Race 4, Race 8 and Race 10.

The day’s feature is the Group 3 Lion Rock Trophy, which features the return of the Hong Kong Derby winner Sky Darci.

Purton goes on the class-dropper (1) Lucky Missile for David Hall here and it looks a good bet. I’ve always had a bit of time for this horse and he actually won in Class 4 last year. He now drops into Class 5, Purton goes on and with any luck from the awkward draw, I think he’ll be hard to beat here.

The day’s feature is the G3 Lion Rock Trophy. The favourite is the Hong Kong Derby winner (6) Sky Darcifor Moreira and Fownes, but I’ll be taking him on. Favourites do have a good record in this race, but you don’t see many come out of the Hong Kong Derby and win it.

(2) More Than This ran 2^nd to Golden Sixty last start, beaten a head, with a further 3.3L back to the 3^rd horse. His last win was 77 weeks ago which is my query with him, but he brings the best form to the race and probably should be favourite.

If you like him, I think you also have to be on (1) Ka Ying Star at $8.50. He beat More Than This two starts ago and also comes out of the G1 last start. Purton sticks with, he draws well in barrier 2 and should take some catching.

(7) Not Usual Talent isn’t completely hopeless at odds.

Backing two horses here.

Will be saving on the favourite (3) Seasons Bliss who does look the one to beat on the back of a 2^nd placing last start over 1200m here at Sha Tin. Up to 1400m suits and with even luck should be right in the finish.

Will also be backing (2) Armor Star who drops in class, gets barrier 1 and Purton goes on. Looks somewhat of a set up from the stable with the apprentice riding him last start from the wide gate, now drops in grade with Zac going on. His last win came in this grade over this track and distance and from the inside draw should be able to go well.

Sticking with (4) Lucky Fun who is absolutely flying, with three wins and two 2nds from his last five starts. He’s getting up in the handicap now but he might just be able to sneak another win. He comes off a dead-heat win with Sunset Watch, who he meets again today. That horse followed the dead-heat with a 3^rd placing last start, beaten a length behind a couple of smart horses. Drawn well enough in barrier 7 and should be very competitive again.

If you fancy him, you have to make a case for (1) Sunset Watch who will carry top weight but looks over the odds at $9.00. Drawn well and with the same weight as he carried to 3^rd last start, he has to be a live chance again.

We see the return of an exciting horse for Size/Moreira here in the form of (13) Sight Success. He won his first three starts in dominant fashion, before failing as the $2.20 favourite in this grade last time we saw him. He pulled up lame and with mucus post-race, so there’s two legitimate excuses to explain his poor performance. Has trialled well, gets in light and just has to overcome the wide gate.

A trip to Hong Kong quickly had Tim hooked to the racing caper, maintaining the best place anywhere in the world on a Wednesday night is Happy Valley. He holds a strong interest in the Hong Kong form, along with the metropolitan racing in Sydney and Melbourne. He’s a fan of dry tracks, Zac Purton and takes particular interest in identifying patterns in the form. Tim wears many hats, juggling the roles of form analyst, jockey manager and racehorse owner.
