Wagga Racing Tips: Thursday, May 6th

Day 1 of the Wagga Carnival is highlighted by the Wagga Town Plate where Billy Bestford is with 2 horses at juicy odds!

While many eyes will be looking south for the final day of the Bool carnival, Wagga kicks off their massive couple of days of racing, highlighted by the Wagga Town Plate today.

There looks to be some quality fields assembled throughout the day and it is set up for a great two days of racing in country New South Wales. The sun is shining and the track is currently rated a good 4 with the rail in the true position.

Best Bet: Race 4 – (4) Smuggler’s Bay

Best Value: Race 7 – (2) Lord Von Costa

Thought getting out to the 1400m finally will do the trick for (6) Grand Palazzo. This looks a weaker maiden than she’s seen recently and now finds a top jockey in Tommy Berry. Was slow away last start and grinded home well and she will love every inch of the trip here. Hoping today can be her day.

Victorian visitor (8) Berenib ran well on debut in a good maiden race and will be another who looks suited out to this trip. Should only improve on that 1st up run and looks to have upside.

(2) Tears Of Effort has been building nicely this prep and looks ready to peak here. Will roll forward and will look the winner at some stage.

Was very impressed with the trial of (4) Smugglers Bay who crossed the line in 2nd under his own steam alongside a recent maiden winner. That trial form has been incredible with first, third, fourth and fifth having all come out and won their next starts. Think he looks better than this grade and draws well in comparison to many of his main rivals here.

(9) Conjola Phoenix should run well on debut. Was pushed along in a recent trial but responded well to riding and Penza jumps aboard today. In an open race he looks a strong chance.

Putting (10) Aperol Sprint on top but the inside draw is the only question mark. WIll be spotting some of her main rivals a decent start in the run you’d think and that might be telling. Was very good however when 4th last start in a strong midweek BM72 and if she gets the gaps late, she will give this a shake. Steps up to her most favoured trip 3rd up and ready to fire.

As long as she isn’t looking for further now (16) Himiko can go close. Was a tough on pace win last start and should be able to roll forward again from the low draw. Can either lead or sit in the box seat for the majority of the race and just needs to handle the step up in grade.

(9) Would Be King has been running well in weaker grade but now steps up to the longer trip for the first time this prep. Drops in weight from last start and think his best is up to this.

The feature race of Day 1 comes up here with the Wagga Town Plate. Once again it is a quality field with a few good winning chances.

(3) Southern Lad has to be a massive chance on his class alone. Was last seen being grabbed late by Masked Crusader in a strong G3 at Randwick and that form has only stacked up since. Has been trialling very well leading up to this and is always good fresh. Wide gate is the only concern but think the $7+ is fair enough to find out.

(2) Lord Von Costa is another who drops well back in grade for this after contesting some hot Saturday races in Victoria. 3rd up now where his best performances have come in the past and loves the 1200m. Should enjoy run of the race stuff from the low draw and looks over the odds.

Concede (9) Marway is flying and may just go forward and run them into the ground again but can’t get near him at $2.70. Stepped up to BM88 grade and failed two back in a race arguably weaker than he sees today. Gets in light though and will be the one they’ll have to catch.

(1) Handle The Truth will be suited dropping back to his favoured 1200m. His best can certainly win and you’d think this may have been a target race for the stable.

Billy Bestford

Billy has been an avid racing fan ever since he and a few mates started a punters club once they turned 18. Following the initial punters clubs, he was properly hooked after landing a nice collect on Admire Rakti in the 2014 Caulfield Cup and has had a soft spot for Japanese horses ever since. Is a massive fan of 'blinkers first time' and has been known to enjoy a 'Hail Mary' multi. Loves punting across metro Sydney and Melbourne every Saturday but isn't scared to venture West late in the day to find a Pikey special.
