It is Jericho Cup day at The Bool where a massive field take on the 4600 metre stayers race. The Horse has assessed the card and has found some chances in Race 1, Race 3, Race 4, Race 6 and the Jericho Cup.

Dean Yendall on a Price/Kent runner always strikes my interest. (2) Swift Sure has raced once for a second at this track and distance. Didn’t start well but made up ground and looked the one to follow from that race. Gets a smaller field here and is a strong winning chance.

(5) Typhoon Moon was in that same race and performed well also. This looks like a race between the two.

Sixteen runners going around the 1700 metres with a wide-open field. The emergency runner (17) Spring Break will get a start and takes favouritism. He gets a good gate and has that same combination as the first race, Yendall Price/Kent. He is stepping up slightly in grade here considering he has not yet landed a maiden victory and that’s the query. Looks to be over the odds and may drift before betting.

The recent racing consistency of (11) Be Amazing stands out here. A win in maiden grade was followed by a second in bm58 – both races had decent quality runners. The Yargi trained galloper has been in the prize money seven times in twelve races, sand at double the odds of the favourite, looks to be a good each way bet.

We up-the-anti in Race 4 with a bm64 over 2000 metres. The favourite (1) Kissinger is the Best Bet on the card. Seven starts for three wins and two places – great consistent form. Last race was at Flemington over this distance in a bm80. It was a much tougher field that day – and arguably could have won. The choice to come here is interesting. Confidence is high on this one. The odds are skinny – but happy to take them – and anchor my multies.

(1) Dee Keeper is probably the best horse in the race but backs-up from a win on Wednesday. Not sure that approach is a good one so taking a set against him.

(5) Shezawitness comes from the Kent/Price stable and has 2 from 2 wins first-up. Drops back in grade here to what she finished last preparation. Looks well placed and at the better odds – looks a good play.

(3) Uptown Lola has been racing well and needs to be included.

The Jericho Cup over 4600 gruelling metres. A huge field assembles (18 runners) for this bm90 graded stayers battle. (1) Frenzied for the Waterhouse/Bott stable has been in great form winning 6 from 18 including 3 wins and 2 places in the last 5 runs. The last win as a bm85 over 3500 metres in Canberra where he took up the running. Likely to look for a similar strategy here and will be able to set the pace. Great chance.

Another winning horse is (2) Dambulla who recently won at Moonee Valley by 2 lengths over the 3850 metres in a bm78. Keeps stepping up in grade and distance and keeps winning – certainly can go on with it here. Second in that race was (4) Alienated who us paying $17 today – not the worst and must entertain.

The favourite is (5) Wil John for he Maher/Eustace stable. Looking at the grades, he raced most recently in a bm70 where he won well beating Alienated (who placed second that day too). It was over the same distance as the Dambulla/Alienated race but he beat him by over 5 lengths compared to the 2 lengths Dambulla beat him. Based on that – you can see why the bookies are with him.

From a betting perspective this comes down to the two favourites – but the chances are everywhere. The Sydney form has stacked up all Spring and Frenzied is the one that can’t be lined-up with many of the other chances. Maher/Eustace would have targeted this race where Waterhouse/Bott probably adjusted towards it along the way. Impossible to split them so keen to take a 3 to 1 bet strategy.

The Horse

The Horse found the thought of placing bets and drinking beers much more appealing once he was married, and that led to an interest in the many intricacies of The Great Game. He enjoys the challenge of predicting what will happen in any given race, but also loves horses themselves, none more so than the mighty mudlark Jungle Edge. His focus lies on metropolitan racing in Victoria and NSW, however isn’t afraid to find one out wide. Away from racing, The Horse is an avid drummer – quite a difficult task with a set of hooves.
