The unraced (3) Wine O’clock from the Patrick Payne stable comes in with two trial wins. The most recent at Moe over 1000 metres was solid enough to expect a showing here. Of course being unseen on race-day, there are still plenty of unknowns – therefore we’re looking towards those with race fitness and experience.

(8) Setanta for Maher’/Eustace has not shown a lot in his previous starts but has had some early support coming in from $4.50 to $3.50. He has had 2 starts on Soft conditions with no places.

(4) Bondi Beau is fourth up for the Price/Kent yard and comes here after an improved showing last start placing second at this track over the 1200 metres. That day he closed well to get the silver medal after sitting seventh in running. The outside draw is not ideal, but he should be at peak fitness now, and with Yendall staying on board, happy to make him the top selection.

Pretty keen to bank on a race-to-race double here for the Price/Kent yard with (5) Master Bartholdi. We’ve had him on top a couple times now for place results, and he is starting to get costly, but his overall form simply looks good enough to be winning. His last 3 starts has netted 3 place results. Craig Newitt stays in the saddle – and from a nice inside gate, he should jump and either lead or sit behind one of the outside runners placing him one-back along the fence. Outside the top selection it is a dart job with some pretty good prices on offer.

(3) Tarakan can continue to improve while (11) Anrushka has shown a little in the jump outs.

(2) Bitaequi is the one at the odds.

The bm70 over 1100 metres brings together a few quality horses. (1) Humzz has been racing above this grade and placed sixth behind Sword Of Mercy last start in a bm78 race. Has some second-up form, likes this distance range, and goes well on Soft conditions. He draws outside of the leaders so will need to drop back in behind and look for the outside lanes.

(2) Seven Castles is the main one in contention after 13 starts for 4 wins and 3 places. Has already won in this grade – he is a consistent galloper who has the services of Laura Lafferty (including a claim). From the inside draw he should be able to lead them around, and look for Laura to make every post a winner. If they’re not winning from the front, than reassess his chances.

This is an open race with some good odds on offer. I am unconvinced of the two joint favorites currently in the market, (6) St Joeys and (9) Glassey Miss. St Joeys looks to be unders despite 1 win from 1 start at this track. He had been racing in this grade last preparation with little success. Can’t understand why he is competing for favouritism. Glassey Miss admittedly looks more likely, with 3 wins from 9 starts overall. All three wins have been on Soft conditions and she has already won in this grade. This is a slight drop back from how she finished last preparation. Coming from the Wilde stable we can expect a little bit of polish.

One of the runners at odds is (2) Upswing who also has 3 wins – and also 3 places from 11 starts overall. The Patrick Payne runner gets Billy Eagan’s services (predictably) and from this inside gate should fund a cozy spot behind the leaders two pairs back. First-up he is 2 from 4, and all 3 wins have been on Soft conditions. Last preparation he started his campaign in a bm78 grade race before competing (and placing) in bm70 races. This is a drop down in class and considering you’re getting $19.00 he looks like a great each-way play.

The chances do not end there – (10) Aeecee Diamond can run well.

The Horse

The Horse found the thought of placing bets and drinking beers much more appealing once he was married, and that led to an interest in the many intricacies of The Great Game. He enjoys the challenge of predicting what will happen in any given race, but also loves horses themselves, none more so than the mighty mudlark Jungle Edge. His focus lies on metropolitan racing in Victoria and NSW, however isn’t afraid to find one out wide. Away from racing, The Horse is an avid drummer – quite a difficult task with a set of hooves.
