2026 Underwood Stakes Tips, Odds & Betting Preview

The 2026 Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival continues at Caulfield this Saturday, September 19, with a compact but high-quality field assembling for the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m).

Cosmic Crusader has been one of the finds of the season, Lindermann arrives off a dominant Chelmsford Stakes win, and proven Group 1 performers Buckaroo and Birdman give the $1 million weight-for-age feature genuine depth.

Cosmic Crusader Gets His Ideal Setup

Cosmic Crusader has made an immediate impact since travelling east for Andrea Leek. He won the Bletchingly Stakes and P.B. Lawrence Stakes at his first two Melbourne starts before producing arguably the run of the race when third in the Memsie Stakes.

William Pike went back from a wide barrier in the Memsie and Cosmic Crusader was forced to make his run from last in a race controlled closer to the speed. Despite that, he closed strongly behind Beiwacht and lost little in defeat.

The rise from 1400m to 1800m looks ideal fourth-up. He won the Group 1 Northerly Stakes over this trip in Perth last summer and barrier three should allow Pike to settle much closer without using excessive energy. At an early quote around $2.75, he is short enough, but he has the most obvious winning profile.

Lindermann Controls the Race

Lindermann bounced back emphatically in the Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick, rolling forward and proving too strong over 1600m. He now draws barrier one for Blake Shinn and looks the clear leader in a race without much natural pressure.

That tactical advantage matters at Caulfield. If Shinn is able to dictate through the middle stages, Lindermann may be difficult to reel in around the tight circuit. The 1800m is no concern and his record at weight-for-age level demands respect.

The main question is price. His Chelmsford win was achieved on his terms, while Cosmic Crusader is capable of applying significantly more pressure late than the opposition he faced in Sydney.

Birdman and Buckaroo Add Depth

Birdman finished sixth first-up in the Memsie after settling well back. The import showed significant promise through his first Australian preparation, including a Group 1 Tancred Stakes win over 2400m, and the step to 1800m is firmly in his favour.

Ben Melham should be able to hold a useful midfield position from barrier four. Birdman may ultimately want 2000m and beyond, but he has the acceleration to be competitive at this trip and looks ready to improve sharply second-up.

Buckaroo was an eye-catching fifth when resuming in the Winx Stakes. He has produced some of his best Australian performances between 1800m and 2000m and Mark Zahra takes the ride from barrier eight. He may concede a start from the outside draw, but his first-up run suggests he has returned in good order.

Can Pinstriped Cause an Upset?

Pinstriped has quietly put together three encouraging runs this preparation. He finished strongly behind Cosmic Crusader in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes before running second to Evaporate over 1500m at Sandown.

The eight-year-old has only raced once at 1800m, finishing third, but he is now fourth-up and should receive an economical run from barrier two. He lacks the recent Group 1 figures of the favourites, although double-figure odds make him an interesting place or exotic inclusion.

Kingswood is another runner capable of improving over 1800m, while Middle Earth and Attrition need to lift on their most recent form to threaten this field.

Underwood Stakes Speed Map

Lindermann should lead from barrier one, with Cosmic Crusader able to park close behind him from barrier three. Pinstriped and Birdman can also settle in the first half without being pushed, while Buckaroo and Kingswood are likely to be ridden more patiently.

The lack of obvious pressure creates the main tactical danger for backmarkers. Cosmic Crusader does not want to give Lindermann an uncontested head start, so expect Pike to be more positive than he was in the Memsie.

Cosmic Crusader has the form, fitness and draw to make amends for his Memsie defeat. He is already a Group 1 winner at 1800m and should get every chance to remain within striking distance of Lindermann.

Lindermann is the main danger because of his tactical advantage, while Birdman can improve significantly second-up. Buckaroo brings strong weight-for-age form and Pinstriped is the value runner for wider exotics.
