The 2026 Flight Stakes shapes as a tactical Group 1 contest for three-year-old fillies at Royal Randwick this Saturday, October 3.

Only seven fillies have accepted for the 1600m feature, with Striking Alibi, Global Goal and Bangkok Hottie controlling the early betting. Bangkok Hottie brings the strongest recent winning form after completing the Princess Series double in the Tea Rose Stakes, while the small field means barriers and race position could be every bit as important as raw ability.

Striking Alibi Gets Her Chance from Barrier Two

Striking Alibi has drawn barrier two and should get every opportunity to conserve energy before the pressure goes on. The Chris Waller-trained filly has been kept safe at the top of the market and the rise to the Group 1 mile is the defining test of her preparation.

In a field of seven, the draw gives her rider flexibility rather than forcing a predetermined racing pattern. She should be able to settle wherever comfortable and avoid covering unnecessary ground, which is a major advantage in what could become a tactical race.

Global Goal Brings a Different Form Line

Global Goal has been prominent in betting and draws barrier five for Dylan Gibbons. The John Sargent-trained filly enters the Flight with a lighter racing preparation than some of her rivals, giving her the profile of a runner who may still have improvement to come.

The 1600m is the key question, but her market support suggests she is expected to handle the step up. With only seven runners, Gibbons should be able to keep her within striking distance even if she settles behind the leaders.

Bangkok Hottie Has the Proven Lead-Up Form

Bangkok Hottie is the runner with the clearest traditional Flight Stakes profile. The David Payne-trained filly has won her past two starts and arrives after taking out the Tea Rose Stakes at Randwick, having overcome a testing run to continue her winning streak.

Barrier three is another positive. Kerrin McEvoy should be able to settle her in a comfortable position without being caught wide, and she has already demonstrated that she can handle the Randwick circuit and the pressure of the Princess Series.

The remaining question is the mile. If she sees out 1600m strongly, her combination of race fitness, winning form and tactical draw makes her extremely difficult to dismiss.

Queen’s Gamble Can Put Pressure on the Favourites

Queen’s Gamble is the clear next line of betting behind the leading trio. She draws barrier seven for Tommy Berry, which is far less concerning in a seven-horse field than it would be in a capacity Group 1.

Berry can assess the tempo before deciding whether to roll forward or find cover. She needs to improve to turn the tables on the market leaders, but the gap may not be as large as the prices suggest if the race develops into a slowly run tactical mile.

The Outsiders

De Armas has barrier one for Chris Waller and could receive the most economical run in the race. At a much larger price, that makes her worth respecting in exotics.

Sumac draws six for Jason Collett, while Parisest Magic has barrier four for Rachel King. Both need to improve considerably on exposed form to trouble the favourites, but small fields can occasionally produce unusual tactical outcomes.

Flight Stakes Speed Map

The seven-runner field makes the tempo difficult to predict. De Armas has the inside gate, while Striking Alibi and Bangkok Hottie draw immediately outside her. None of the three leading chances needs to be ridden aggressively to obtain a position.

If there is no genuine leader prepared to inject speed, this could develop into a sprint home from the 600m. That would place an even greater premium on positioning and acceleration rather than stamina alone.

There is little between the three market leaders, but Bangkok Hottie gets the nod on the strength of her proven Randwick form and consecutive wins through the traditional Princess Series lead-ups. She is already battle-hardened and barrier three should give McEvoy the chance to put her wherever the race requires.

Striking Alibi is the danger from an excellent draw, while Global Goal has upside and deserves her position near the top of the market. Queen’s Gamble is the value option if the leading trio become too short.
