Great edition of the $75,000 Mudgee Cup with some quality stables taking part. Favourite for the race is the Waterhouse/Bott trained (3) Regal Stage who comes here looking for three wins in a row. Last time he won the Snake Gully Cup beating Irish Songs to the line. Relatively lightly raced for a 6 year-old, the Redoute’s Choice gelding has a pretty good record overall with 17 starts for 5 wins and 6 places. He has done his best work first-up, but comes here after a nice little freshen up, which indicates this was mapped out. The gate is not ideal, but she has the speed to get across and land one-out one-back in running.War horse (2) Petrology comes here as start 65 but looks to be a little outgunned, and the 9 year-old doesn’t really fire second-up. (4) Chalmers, from the Kris Lees stable, is a quality runner but does step up in grade and is yet unproven, so happy to take him on today. A genuine threat is the Lever trained (7) Highly Desired, who sticks in this grade and is proven at the distance. A pretty consistent galloper, and will be somewhere in the mix.The Canberra based runner, (10) Mookareena has been racing well for the Joseph/Jones stable, and comes here with every chance. She is a consistent mare and she’ll look likely from the start, getting the inside gate and potentially leading them. She may be able to hold-off most runners, but unsure whether she can hold them all out.Tip: (3) Regal Stage – $4.20 at Ladbrokes

The Horse

The Horse found the thought of placing bets and drinking beers much more appealing once he was married, and that led to an interest in the many intricacies of The Great Game. He enjoys the challenge of predicting what will happen in any given race, but also loves horses themselves, none more so than the mighty mudlark Jungle Edge. His focus lies on metropolitan racing in Victoria and NSW, however isn’t afraid to find one out wide. Away from racing, The Horse is an avid drummer – quite a difficult task with a set of hooves.
