Sunshine Coast Racing Tips: Saturday, January 30th

There is a lot of support around for the Mirunners horse, but I am siding with the stablemate early in (8) Leadership Spill. He has a tremendous first-up record and generally runs well over the 1000m. Without any official jumpouts, it may be a bit of a query but having watched one on Gollan’s video, he thinks he should be quite forward, more forward than when he won last preparation first-up. I don’t mind the gate and I think he gets into a nice position in the run. Happy to bet on him each-way with the favourite so short.

(6) Lyrical Girl is a deserved favourite and one to beat. She is going for her fifth win on the trot and is drawn well enough to do so. Ryan Maloney is back aboard which is a positive and she will be in a forward position from the draw. She looks set to step up in grade nicely and gets the chance to prove tomorrow she is worthy of more. She is under the odds in my opinion and happy to bet around her.

(7) Syd’s Footprints is way over the odds here and can run a bold race from a decent draw. This is his first start in Queensland, and I think he can make his presence known throughout. Include him in your exotics.

Tricky little race here with a fair amount of speed drawn.

(2) Simply Fly is one of the runners that won’t get into this speed battle. The Spirit of Boom gelding went back from a wide barrier last start and flew home on the heavy going to win the race by half a length. He is drawn much better than last start and may use it to obtain a closer position in the run. He will take massive improvement from that first-up run considering he only had the one trial in the lead up, and if the track unexpectedly takes a turn for the worst, you know he will still run well.

(4) Snitzari brings the New South Wales form after she won her class 2 at Muswellbrook in good fashion. She came wide on the track to win by a length in heavy conditions. She will have to manoeuvre from a poor draw and if she can get into a nice position, she can give this race a bit of a shake.

(3) Zingalong led the entire way at this track and distance last start and will need to sit in the first two to give himself a chance. Although he is drawn wide, they should go forward and he will be in this race a long way.

I thought the debut of (6) Glorious Ruby was very good, and she just found one better in Swift Witness on the day. Although she went down by 3 lengths, she beat home the rest of the field by 0.8 of a length and beat a couple of better-bred horses by 3 lengths or more. This is a much weaker field then what she took on at the Gold Coast and I will be shocked if she doesn’t beat this field from the favourable draw.

(4) Sacca ran well on debut and will come on nicely from the run. He has drawn the inside and with not a lot of pace in the race, he should be able to take up the running. If he can pinch an easy time in the lead, he may be hard to run down.

(7) Mishani Tulip beat (4) Sacca by just under half a length by taking the shortcuts late in the race. She had to go back from the wide barrier on the day and again will have to do the same and ride for luck late in the race.

(10) Platinum Euros is the short favourite after winning as the short priced favourite last start. He missed the start by around three lengths but did catch the field quite early before using the pace and gaining momentum and using his electric turn of foot to salute with ease. 1200m does look a query for him but he does drop 4kg in weight and if he can jump with them, he will be right there in the finish.

(5) What The Fuss is a country New South Wales horse who has come for a crack at this one. He is aiming for three wins on the trot after winning the Gilgandra Town Plate in impressive fashion before heading to Cowra for the Japan Cup, where he was once again dominant. This isn’t an overly strong race which will be good for him and with an experienced jockey in Michael Rodd aboard, he should be given a sweet run. I don’t mind the draw and I expect them to in the front half of the field before peeling off in the straight to make their run.

(6) Trengganu won well in a benchmark 70 at Eagle Farm over the 1000m first-up and he will look to make it back-to-back wins here. Ben Thompson will ride the gelding from a nice barrier, and it is expect that he will sit into a similar position to his last start. He drops 1.5kg from his last run and the step up to 1200m will be ideal second-up.

Happy to stick with the favourite here in (5) Couldn’t Refuse and I expect it to firm up come race time. He won well two back at Doomben over the 1650m, holding on by 0.1 of a length to salute over Rebel Rock before heading to Eagle Farm over the mile and winning the race with ease. He is chasing a hat-trick of race wins here and is drawn ideally to do so from barrier one. His record over this distance is superb and he does perform well here at the Sunshine Coast. Expect him to either sit just off the leaders or to lead himself with the lack of speed on paper. He will be the one to catch.

(3) Star of Michelin is coming back from 1800m to a mile and he is also taking a massive step back in class. Tomlinson gets the ride once again and will claim 3kg off his back which could be crucial. He will be hitting the line late.

(4) Penshurst is also going for a hat-trick of wins after saluting in dominant fashion. This is a lot hard here and will give the favourite a start. I think he is looking for further.

Another horse who performed admirably behind better horses on the Gold Coast, stepping back in class here is (10) Pull Anchor. He savaged the line in the class 4 on the Gold Coast, coming from near last on the turn to finish 2.8 lengths back in sixth behind Stolen Jade, Intrepidacious and Redoute’s Image. I think he is going to love that extra 100m and providing Ryan Maloney can keep him out of trouble, he will be hard to beat.

(7) The Driller was only fair at Doomben but will appreciate the extra 200m here. He finished 2.3 lengths back in fourth last start which I thought was passable for a first-up run, up in class. Sticks to the same class here and with a run under his belt, I think he is a top chance.

(2) Kateru has drawn poorly but he was always going to give them a start. He will need luck but he will be flying late.

I think Aquis Farm can nail a quinella here but not in the way you are all thinking.

(5) Igor goes on top for me and this consistent gelding is looking to go back-to-back after narrowly winning last start at the Sunshine Coast. He drops 4.5kg off that run and I love the step up to a mile now, especially due to the fact he got within 2.5 lengths of the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate winner Apache Chase over 1500m. Any rain won’t hurt his chances and his consistency is there to be seen, so I believe he is over the odds here.

(9) Divulge is coming off a massive maiden win at Doomben over the 1660m, where he saluted by 3.5 lengths. The ceiling hasn’t been met with him, so he could very well blow these others away or we could see some weaknesses. Happy to have a punt on him as a back-up.

(6) Little Miss Pixie is the best of the rest and will be put into the exotics.

This is the highlight of the afternoon, the Listed Sunshine Coast Cup over the 1400m.

(11) Splendoronthegrass has had a pretty consistent preparation, going down by no longer than 1.5 lengths in all four of her runs. After winning a class 6 over the 1400m at Eagle Farm by the barest of margins, the So You Think mare headed to the Gold Coast, where she was beaten late in the race by half a length by Fisticuffs, though she comfortably beat home next start winner Roman Aureus. She drops 1.5kg and is drawn nicely to get a comfortable run in transit. If she can avoid trouble, she is a good each-way bet.

(14) Juventus narrowly went down to Ulysses at Randwick over the 1500m last start, which is solid form for this race. He is drawn ideally and drops 3kg from his last run, which will be the lowest weight he has carried in over a year. He will be hoping there isn’t much rain to improve his chances.

(4) Prometheus was narrowly beaten by Ligulate last start over the mile and is on the quick back-up. He will be hoping the speed goes on because he will be hitting the line hard.

(2) Spurcraft is a 1000m specialist who has won 5 of his 8 starts over the distance and has raced well here in the past. He was massive behind Sugar Boom at the Gold Coast and will appreciate this easier race. I think he gets into a similar position from the draw and if Jim Byrne can put him into a nice position, with even luck he will be in the finish once again.

(1) Tambo’s Mate loves the Sunshine Coast and steps back from 1400m to 1000m on the back of a freshen up. He has been racing in much better company and is drawn well enough to make his presence felt. He wouldn’t surprise me here.

(6) Tullio is probably the best of the rest.
