The only race of the day at Ascot I’m keen to bet in is the first, where the market is shaped around the favourite (8) Powerful Force. I think that’s an error and I actually expect more support to come for this horse, who represents the popular Williams/Pike/Peters combination and wears the blinkers for the first time. We saw a similar thing happen on Wednesday with another horse for Williams/Pike – Seven Kingdoms – who had the blinkers on first time and was smashed into $1.80 before running a very uninspiring 7th. Powerful Force has really failed to impress in his two career starts to date and there is no indication that the blinkers being applied will suddenly result in a spike in performance. Happy to oppose him here and as the current $2.70 favourite, that means there’s a bit of value elsewhere.

(7) Shirl’s Dream is a runner that really catches my eye here, currently at $6.50. He’s had three career starts and has been very ordinary in all of them, failing to finish within 5L of the winner in any of them. However, he makes his stable debut for Dan Morton today, who wastes no time putting his main jockey Chris Parnham on board. He hasn’t trialled publicly leading into his first start for his new trainer and he tackles the 1400m straight away, which gives me the feeling they’ve got him ready to go fresh. This is a very winnable race is he were to have any ability at all.

(10) Freedomofthepress was scratched from a race at Bunbury yesterday in favour of this race, and I expect him to be very competitive. The big negative is the sharp step up from 1000m to 1400m, which I always mark harshly, but it was hard not to take notice of his debut run. He settled last of the pack down the 1000m straight at Pinjarra and ran home in the fastest final 200m, 400m and 600m of the race. He was almost struggling to keep up early, so that step up to 1400m actually looks to suit – it’s just whether he’s fit enough to handle it.

(1) Ginger Mack continues to run well, he just always finds a couple better. He’s a bit camera shy. The form around the race he comes out of looks to be very reasonable and with even luck he should be thereabouts at the finish.

Finally, the Lindsey Smith team have gelded (9) Elafella and applied the blinkers for the first time, so no shock to see some improvement.
