It’s a pretty ordinary race card, but The Horse has found a few runners if you’re looking to combat the Mondayitis.

This is arguable the strongest race of the day, the bm58 over 1600 metres. This is a pretty open betting race, which means there is some okay odds on offer—if you are good enough to land them. There are some good reasons against most of the field (if not all).

(4) Oh Cecilia broke the bm58 grade last start, but stays in the grade looking for another win. She had one crack recently at the higher grade, but failed to make any impression.

(2) Not For Izzy finally got out of maiden status last start, but she steps up in grade today. She takes the role as favourite, but that looks a little off-the-mark.

Likewise for (7) Be Amazing, who steps up in grade today after getting a maiden victory.

The one who has raced in higher grades is (1) Shoot For Coomaah dropping back from a bm64 to compete here. He ran in a number of races that grade, and at this distance last preparation, but didn’t get the win. Looking at overall form, he has the edge today. Coupled with an inside draw where jockey Laura Lafferty (with claim) can make her own luck, he gets my top selection.

Like the look of the Laura Lafferty mount again in this race, with (3) Argyle Belle coming here after placing 3^rd in a bm64, and the 2^nd in a bm58. This is really no stronger here today (although a larger field), and she can go one better. She gets a decent gate which will give her the chance to sit easily in mid-field with some cover.

Outside her, it’s a dart job—but the veteran galloper (7) Sassoon does drop considerably in grade to what he has competed in (but this does look the right grade for him to be racing in). At the price of $17 he has every chance of a place or surprising with a win. He is just hard to find. Happy to play both in this field.

The I Am Invincible filly trained with John Mccardle (7) Sure Am Invincible is having its fourth start here, with one win and one place. The only fail was on Heavy going. So ignoring that. The pace is going to be on from the inside draw, with a few fighting for the lead. She should get in behind the leader without too much fuss, so as long as the split comes, she should have her chance. Jake Noonan is one of the more seasoned jockeys here today, so that no doubt will be important.

We backed (9) Changing Tracks last start at good odds and got the prize. The knock is that she is up in grade, only won by a thin margin last race, and gets an outside draw. The $4.00 on offer looks under the odds.

The one at better odds, which has been racing in this grade for some time (competitively without winning) is (12) Tugga War. She has had 22 starts for only one win—but placed ten additional times. Her best has been on Good tracks and at each way odds; she is in with a great shot to get another win.

(5) Ping Ping goes into the exotics.

The Horse

The Horse found the thought of placing bets and drinking beers much more appealing once he was married, and that led to an interest in the many intricacies of The Great Game. He enjoys the challenge of predicting what will happen in any given race, but also loves horses themselves, none more so than the mighty mudlark Jungle Edge. His focus lies on metropolitan racing in Victoria and NSW, however isn’t afraid to find one out wide. Away from racing, The Horse is an avid drummer – quite a difficult task with a set of hooves.
