A pretty solid field here for the feature race of the day, the Bet365 Benalla Cup. (2) Harlech drops back from Group 1 company to take on horses which includes some proven only up to bm58 grade. I am actually surprised the field is as tight in the market as it is; with every chance the favourites will shorten right-up while the unlikely brigade will drift right out. As such Harlech is paying $3.35, but his last win was in Group 2 in New Zealand around a year ago, and although not terrible, his recent Group 1 appearances looked a bridge too far. Either way, he is clearly the class runner in the race.

(1) Haripour has been in better company performing well at Group 2 level last preparation. He gets to lug the full 63kgs in the Cup, but over 1406 metres, he should have the ability to offset the weight. He hasn’t got the greatest record first-up, so really wonder if this is a target or just to blow out the cobwebs. Considering this is not his pet distance, let’s go with the latter.

One that can win first-up is (4) Black Sail, but has been hard to find.

Mitchell Beer has two runners in the Cup, most notably (10) Mnementh, who goes around at a pretty good price, with the early odds of $13 already snapped up. He has been running well in worse company, including a second to Express Courier who also runs today in Canberra (and is one of my best bets). The jump in grade here is pretty significant, noting the class of some of the other runners. But he definitely racing consistently and should be in the exotics.

(5) Easy Beast has found support early too – but has been jumping around in the grades without winning. A second to Rich Hips reads okay.

The Cup is a tough race with plenty of chances. I am looking towards class, Haripour may not be ready, but Harlech is. Despite average results in group company, he has been tackling the likes of Behemoth.

The Horse

The Horse found the thought of placing bets and drinking beers much more appealing once he was married, and that led to an interest in the many intricacies of The Great Game. He enjoys the challenge of predicting what will happen in any given race, but also loves horses themselves, none more so than the mighty mudlark Jungle Edge. His focus lies on metropolitan racing in Victoria and NSW, however isn’t afraid to find one out wide. Away from racing, The Horse is an avid drummer – quite a difficult task with a set of hooves.
