Benalla Racing Tips: Friday, April 9th

An eight-race meeting at Benalla on Friday afternoon and Billy Bestford has found three races that he’s keen to bet into!

We’re racing in the Victorian country town of Benalla on Friday afternoon, with a eight-race card and a couple of good betting prospects. Racing expert Billy Bestford is in the saddle to bring us his Benalla preview and best betting tips for the afternoon.

The Benalla track is currently a Good 4 and should remain in that range with fine weather expected on Friday.

Billy is betting in three races, with bets in Race 1, Race 4 and Race 6.

Pretty keen to side with the race experienced (3) Johnny Chutzpah. He ran some nice races in his debut prep, narrowly being beaten in his first two starts. Think he will only have improved from that and this looks his race to finally get that maiden win out of the way. His best performance was fresh over this trip and looks the one to beat.

(11) Fighting Lockdown has looked good at the jumpouts and can definitely run a race on debut. The gate is the query but any luck in running and she will be going close.

(10) Ashmosa looks the best value in an open race. Has been building towards a win with two solid placings. Her 2nd behind Five Star Decanter is strong enough form, after that horse went on to win another strong race.

Thought (6) Yesugei looked a decent bet here. Admittedly the favourite is hard to beat but at a price factor, this horse is the one I want to have something on. Took on some black type in his debut prep before running on well in his two starts this preparation. He was only beaten by Reuber fresh and that horse has since run well in a strong Saturday race at Moonee Valley. Happy to see him out to this trip and should go close.

(10) La Spezia is the obvious threat and has run well in her three career starts to date. Looks ideally suited out to this trip and will enjoy the gun run from the low draw. Just think she is under the odds here.

(9) Flying Nostra isn’t without a hope after just missing at wagga over the mile. Gets in nice and light with a good apprentice claim here and might be able to roll forward from the wide gate.

(2) Port Royal should have the measure of these after being unlucky in a strong race last start. Before that he finished 4th, 2L off Ruler By Choice in a bm64 after almost 18 months away from racing. Will now be ready to peak 3rd up and has gradually been improving with each run. Gets a claim to offset the big weight and should enjoy all favours from gate 3.

Thought (6) Makaretu Boy could run a sneaky race at a big price. Looks to have come back in good order after a big run fresh behind I Am Mamwaazel at Albury. That horse had been competitive in metro races before recently changing stables. That run will do plenty of good for this horse and steps up to the mile here from a nice barrier. Can definitely have something on at the price.

(4) Really Swish is a winner at this track/distance and comes back in grade for this. Looks another big chance but probably wanting a touch bigger price than the current $3.30.

Billy Bestford

Billy has been an avid racing fan ever since he and a few mates started a punters club once they turned 18. Following the initial punters clubs, he was properly hooked after landing a nice collect on Admire Rakti in the 2014 Caulfield Cup and has had a soft spot for Japanese horses ever since. Is a massive fan of 'blinkers first time' and has been known to enjoy a 'Hail Mary' multi. Loves punting across metro Sydney and Melbourne every Saturday but isn't scared to venture West late in the day to find a Pikey special.
