Victorian racing takes place at Benalla on Tuesday and fresh off two winners on Monday, The Horse is back with three selections for today’s action.

Fresh off two juicy winners from four tips on Monday, The Horse is back with a set for Benalla.

There’s three races worth a penny, commencing with Race 1, followed by Race 6 and Race 7.

The favourite in this affair (12) Sweet Home Alabama comes in after two runs, and two second places. Last time it was behind Chapel Lane (who also runs today), and only by the barest of margins. She gets an inside draw (gate 2) and looks very likely to lead (although tough to assess the new starters).

On her immediate outside is (6) Red Peroni who comes in with a very similar form line, one race for one second. And again, only by the barest of margins. The Brazen Beau gelding was unlucky not to win, should be fitter now, and the rise in distance is a positive. Hard to split them, but at the better odds, Red Peroni is likely to have the last shot at the leader, most likely Sweet Home Alabama. So he goes on top.

Of course, there are plenty of unknowns here and (7) Royal Confession is the one at double figure odds worth including.

It’s pretty easy to make a case against most of these runners. The ones that have competed in the better company (at bm64 grade) really have not shown a lot, while most with the single win against their name have been trying (and failing) for some time to get the bm58 win.

At first glance this looks like a suitable race for the favourite (10) Kasino to come back and get a first-up win. The Zoffany mare has only won once last preparation, but out of the all, looks to have the most upside. Will Price has been riding well, while she comes from the Maher & Eustace yard, so we can expect her to have a touch of shine.

The top weight (1) Red Octane has raced in tougher gigs, but he is not that consistent.

(9) Surin Beach is double figure odds and comes here after going around behind Hindaam where he was paying $61. He placed fifth and was far from disgraced. Based on form, it’s between him and Kasino.

This looks to be the right race for (3) She’s A Karaka who placed third (when we backed her) at Kyneton last start over 1800 metres. She drops in grade but steps up in distance slightly—which should not present a problem. Maher & Eustace have put the senior rider Harry Coffey in the saddle after trying a few others. Her overall record is pretty sound, with 12 starts with 2 wins and 3 places. When looking for what could beat her, that’s where the confidence grows. Everything else in the field has been uncompetitive in this grade.

The only one showing some consistent, and likely winning form, is (7) Test A Day. But She’s A Karaka looks to have the wood on her—and a forest on the rest. Best bet on the card.

The Horse

The Horse found the thought of placing bets and drinking beers much more appealing once he was married, and that led to an interest in the many intricacies of The Great Game. He enjoys the challenge of predicting what will happen in any given race, but also loves horses themselves, none more so than the mighty mudlark Jungle Edge. His focus lies on metropolitan racing in Victoria and NSW, however isn’t afraid to find one out wide. Away from racing, The Horse is an avid drummer – quite a difficult task with a set of hooves.
