It’s an eight-race card at Scone on Monday and Joshua Reed has highlighted three bets that appeal at the meeting.

It’s an eight-race card at Scone on Monday and there’s three bets that appeal at the meeting.

Tipping local trainer Paul Messara to enjoy a good day at the races, with a couple of the stable’s runners standing out in the back half of the card.

This bloke is the best bet on the card, and I think he will start around $1.50. (4) Steps on Fire was awesome on debut with Reece Jones in the saddle as he led the entire way at Muswellbrook to salute by 2 lengths.

He has bigger things in target and will be extremely competitive in a TAB Highway down the track, and with that in mind he should put this field away with ease, despite the wide draw. I love that Reece Jones remains aboard with his 1.5kg claim and I will be shocked and disappointed to see anything but a win here.

No prizes to finding this girl, but it is better than bank interest if she can salute. (4) Mother’s Mercy made light work of her opposition at the end of last year beating home some decent country gallopers like From The Bush, Spiranac and Gold Codes.

She trialled up well in preparation for this and will no doubt be forward for her resumption. The draw is a touch awkward and will need a bit of luck, hopefully she drifts a touch before the jump to justify those slight queries, but he is the best in the race.

(3) Lady Patricia is another Paul Messara runner who I have on top here and will be hitting peak fitness here. Paul Messara has an incredible 42% winning strike rate here at Scone, winning 10 of his 24 attempts in the last 12 months.

Back to (3) Lady Patricia. She was favourite last start when she was slow to begin and ended up sitting a touch further back than she wanted and as they peeled into the straight, in my opinion was in poorer ground to her winning rival. She gets the blinkers for the first time and will tackle the 1100m for the first time also. Christian Reith will need to get her into a nice spot throughout from the iffy barrier but if he can, she will be one to watch as they turn.
