Tim Geers previews all 10 races on Bunbury’s first ever standalone Saturday meeting for the 2021 Bunbury Cup.

bunbury-turf-club

Bunbury hosts its biggest meeting in the Club’s history on Saturday, with its first standalone Saturday meeting for the 2021 Bunbury Cup.

The meeting also features the Breeders’ Classic and the Bunbury Stakes, meaning all three features are on the same card for the first time.

After rain throughout the week, the track is rated a Soft 5, with the rail in the true position.

Tim Geers has previewed all 10 races below with his tips and betting strategy.

Quite keen on (11) Fair Grace here for Annie King and Pat Carbery. This horse is on debut and has trialled very nicely on two occasions. In her first trial, she was never let off the bridle and ran up the backside of the winner in the final 200m. She had plenty left to offer. She then came out and won her second trial. Anne King has a good record with her runners here at Bunbury and I expect her to be very competitive. The query is where she gets to from barrier 10, as it can be hard to make ground in early races at Bunbury.

(5) Quintus was the horse that beat Fair Grace in her first trial. He comes across to WA after failing in four starts in Victoria. His trial was enough to suggest he could run a good race here and he gets the blinkers on again for his stable debut.

(1) My Hidden Journey had no luck first up when three-wide the trip. His form from last preparation would be enough to see him be very competitive and he’s run 2nd in all three starts on soft ground. Drawn well today so gets his chance to break through.

(6) Cotchin and (7) Unitool have both had excuses recently and could run well at odds.

Tip: (11) Fair Grace $5.10 Sportsbetting

Value: (5) Quintus $9.50 Sportsbet

Betting Strategy: 1 unit WIN Fair Grace, 0.5 units WIN Quintus

(1) Ladies Of London looks exceptionally hard to beat here. She has two wins and a 2nd from four starts this prep. The only concern here is the 1200m as she’s had five goes at the distance without winning, but she gets a soft draw in barrier 2 and should be no worse than box seat.

(2) Chief Archer has a fantastic record here at Bunbury, with three wins from four starts at the track. He’s undefeated at the track and distance and comes out of a decent race behind Downforce at Ascot last start. The query is the soft track but willing to give him another chance on the surface here.

(6) Fair Justice is a talented horse. He was given a rotten ride last start and also raced below his best, but his efforts prior to that were good. He’s had an eight-week break between runs and he could be competitive in a race like this.

(3) Vadette De Star could be something special. She was well-backed late in betting on debut at Ascot, and her win was impressive. She was held up until about the 200m mark before bursting through and running down Charleton Eddie. That horse has form around the likes of Chantorque so for Vadette De Star to beat him at her first ever start, she must be pretty good.

(9) Secret Plan just found the 1000m too short first up. Triple Missile was the horse that beat him that day and he’s since come out and won again super impressively. Secret Plan will relish the step up to 1200m here but he’ll likely be giving Vadette De Star a decent start as he’s drawn out in barrier 11.

(2) Dark Assault can be included at odds. He won first up and has since been gelded. The stable is absolutely flying.

(1) Hot Zed and (4) Alpha And Omega chances.

Interesting race here as (1) Gemma’s Son gets the bar plates on for the first time, which is a huge negative.

(5) Excellent Dream comes off a win over Weaponson and Downforce and I think that form looks good. The query is dropping back to 1000m after two 1200m runs but he draws well in barrier 3 and should sit off what is likely to be a hot speed.

(3) Plutocracy is another that comes off a good win last time out. His past three starts have all been very good and from barrier 2 he should get a good run in midfield.

(4) Ziebell will lead them at a hot speed with the blinkers on first up. Might need the run.

If there is a roughie to include, it could be (8) Guns Of Navarone. He has a good record when fourth up from a spell and he draws much better today compared to last start.

Surely, surely today is the day for (5) Charleton Eddie. He ran 2nd to Vadette De Star first up and he ran 2nd to Chantorque twice at the end of last preparation. Provided he handles the soft ground today, he should be very hard to run down, but he’s getting a little bit costly for those that continue to back him.

(6) Diablerie might be able to run a race here at double figure odds. He’s won five of his seven starts here at Bunbury. Soft ground isn’t his preferred ground but he has won on heavy ground before so he’s not hopeless.

(3) Weaponson was tested at 1400m last start but didn’t run it out. Back to 1200m is much better and if he returns to how he was racing prior to last start, he’ll be right in the mix.

(11) Absolute will be giving them a big start but the horse is absolutely flying.

Fascinating race. (1) Kissonallforcheeks looks the horse to beat on what she has done to date. She had absolutely no luck last start in the Challenge Stakes where she drew wide and got caught without cover in a slowly run race. The form out of that race is good and with Chris Parnham on today, she’ll be very hard to beat.

The X-factor is (3) Triple Missile who looks a star in the making. He made it three from three with an effortless victory last start, but it’s a big step up from a No-Metro-Wins race to a Listed race against these horses. It wouldn’t surprise me if he won but it would be a huge effort.

(2) Magical Dream draws the inside gate which should help her. She was a couple lengths off Kissonallforcheeks when they met back in November.

I’ve been with (13) Pletto both starts this prep and I’ll give her another chance today. She was good first up behind London Miss, and she had no luck last start when held up between runners. She got dragged back at a crucial stage of the race and by the time she got out, the race was all over. Jockey change today and draws well in barrier 5 so with any luck at all she should be right in the finish.

Is today the day we see (6) Fa’lion Machine get a change of luck? She’s been ridden by an apprentice in all four starts this prep but gets the senior rider on board today. I’m praying we see Whiting be the slightest bit positive from the low draw because if she’s close enough on the turn she can give this a shake.

(1) Living The Dream and (9) Amelia’s Contraire both come off wins and have obvious claims.

Dropping back from 1800m to 1400m is never ideal for me when assessing the form but I think (4) Last Of The Line is up to pulling it off. He’s a serious horse and his win in the Detonator Stakes last start was very soft. Again, the drop back in trip is the query but I have reservations about the favourite so I’ll stick with this horse who just knows how to win.

I think the race sets up well for (2) Samizdat who gets the blinkers back on here and a soft track, which he relishes. He’s won three from four on soft ground and is one from one on heavy, so obviously he appreciates the cut out of the ground. He draws wide in barrier 14 so he’s going to get a long way back, but he’ll be charging home.

(9) Dig Deep isn’t hopeless at double figure odds.

Geez the Bunbury Cup looks at the mercy of (7) Montelena. She comes into this third up from a spell, having been beaten by Last Of The Line last start, and they pulled away from the rest of the field by more than 4L. She gets her preferred soft ground today, draws well with Chris Parnham aboard, and there isn’t anything in this race that should trouble her.

(11) The Big Show could well make it a stable quinella. He ran well first up before a plain effort last start, but he always runs flat second up. He tends to bounce back third up, with three top-two finishes from four starts.

(1) Trap For Fools carries the weight of Bunbury and at his best, he’d give this a big sight, but whether he’s looking for the paddock permanently now is the query. That weight makes things tough.

(10) Superior Smile next best.

Ugly race to finish off with.

I’m not sure whether (9) Antique Jewel just isn’t any good, or whether she’s looking for this kind of trip already. She got the job done (just) and she’s been very dour in all of her starts. She now jumps from 1400m to 2000m and maybe that will bring out a new gear in her.

(3) Rivalry Galore is ready for 2000m now fourth run back from a spell. The key for him is also the soft ground. He’s only ever placed twice from 14 starts on good ground, but has a win and three placings from seven starts on soft ground.

(6) Born To Try comes off a deserved win over the mile. Up to 2000m now and Chris Parnham jumps off to ride Antique Jewel. He’s a chance again.

(11) Reliable Star next best.

Tip: (9) Antique Jewel $6.00 Ladbrokes

Value: (3) Rivalry Galore $10 Bet365

A trip to Hong Kong quickly had Tim hooked to the racing caper, maintaining the best place anywhere in the world on a Wednesday night is Happy Valley. He holds a strong interest in the Hong Kong form, along with the metropolitan racing in Sydney and Melbourne. He’s a fan of dry tracks, Zac Purton and takes particular interest in identifying patterns in the form. Tim wears many hats, juggling the roles of form analyst, jockey manager and racehorse owner.
