canterbury-racing.jpg

There’s a quality eight-race card at Canterbury today with plenty of good betting races on offer.

The track is currently rated a Good 4 and the rail is out 3 metres.

Billy Bestford has looked through the form and found his better bets on the Canterbury card.

Best Bet: Race 7 – (6) Avion Fury
Best Value: Race 5 – (4) Lennon

Thought (5) Peekays Legacy looked good first up finishing 2nd to Grace And Harmony over 1400m. The rise to 1550m should suit and he finds Tommy Berry who should be able to give the horse a good steer from gate 7.

(1) Yangtzee Rapids continues to race well without winning while being well-liked in the market. This is probably one of the easier maidens she finds herself in and is a big chance again today.

(2) Kahuka was a good run on debut behind a smart horse in Maurice’s Medad. He’ll only improve on that and should enjoy a run up on speed from the low draw.

Tip: (5) Peekays Legacy - $4.00 at TAB

(7) Stavenger has only been seen once at the trials late last year but was impressive, running on nicely behind the likes of Fake Love and Ashema. I like the booking of Berry for her debut and can certainly make an impact in an open race.

(6) Socialist is the most experienced horse in this race with the two career starts to her name. She was 2L off Ashema that day which ties into the above horse. Not sure if she really enjoyed the wet track and can improve here 2nd up ontop of the ground.

Thought (1) Morioka was probably a deserved favourite after a solid 3rd on debut last prep. Has been ticking over nicely with two trials and will be much improved coming into her 2nd preparation.

Tip: (7) Stavenger - $4.80 at Bet365

Betting Strategy: 0.5 unit WIN Stavenger

(2) Giannis has run well behind some smart horses. Was seen last start tackling the Pierro Stakes running on very well behind eventual Golden Slipper winner Stay Inside. This drop back in grade will suit and has won a trial impressively leading up to this.

Stablemate (7) Cork Harbour looks a chance after a nice debut in a Saturday grade race earlier this year. He took some winding up but once he got into stride he made up nice ground behind the smart Remarque.

(1) Astrolger can also run well dropping back to maiden grade. Has won a trial nicely in the lead up to this and ran in some strong races earlier this year.

With Giannis scratched, Cork Harbour goes on top in a no bet race.

8. Wild Irish (7) J: Jean Van Overmeire (54kg) T: David Payne
4.24.2444.254.2

Thought (2) Fifteen Aria looked one of the better bets on the card and is a horse with plenty of improvement still to come. 2 wins from 3 career starts with the last of those coming last start at Hawkesbury beating home the smart Yardstick. Should enjoy all favour from barrier 4 and take beating again.

(8) Wild Irish can be a big improver 2nd up after running much better than the market anticipated fresh. Gets out to a more suitable trip and wouldn’t surprise.

8. Either Oar (4) J: Glen Boss (55kg) T: Ms G Markwell
6.56.55.55.56.66

(6) Mollycoddle is as honest as they come and she looks a good winning chance here. Hasn’t missed the quinella in her last 5 starts, winning 3 of those and has had a very quiet trial in the lead up to this. Finds Bowman and thought the $5+ was value.

(2) Ocean Emperor brings strong form to this with a 2nd to Lost And Running as well as a good 4th behind Salina Dreaming and Juan Diva last start in the same grade he faces today.

(4) Lennon was last seen bolting in at Kensignton where he beat Exoboom by 2.5L. That horse has since gone on to win 2 races and run 2nd in 4 others. Looks the one with plenty of upside.

Tip: (6) Mollycoddle - $5.00 at Sportsbet

10. Absolute Legend (5) J: Kerrin Mcevoy (54.5kg) T: L J Bridge
101110108.511

(8) Shibli was well backed on his Australian debut but think he might have just found the 1200m too sharp. Didn’t have much luck either and I like the fact Jmac sticks. The step up to the 1550m is a massive plus and will be right in the finish today. Only career win has come when 2nd up.

(5) Blesk finally broke through for a much deserved win on the back of two good placings this prep. Stays in the same grade for this and can certainly go on with it.

(9) Media Starguest can improve dropping back in trip slightly. Was a huge winner three back at Newcastle before running solidly over 1600m last start. Gets in well with a claim for Louise Day and thought he could be in the finish.

Pretty keen on the chances of (6) Avion Fury who drops out of Group 3 company today. He was far from disgraced there, finishing 5th behind Shared Ambition in his latest outing. Has won over this track/trip three starts back and gets in well with just 55kg. Will be going very close.

The obvious danger is (8) Solar Apex who is looking close to breaking through after a string of placings. The most recent was a hard fought 2nd behind a nice horse and should enjoy every favour from the low draw with Berry to ride. You’d think he will be ahead of his main rival here and will take some catching.

(3) So Wicked is the value runner and has been working towards a race like this all prep. Ran a very good 3rd over 1500m last start and now looks ideally placed stepping up to her most favoured trip.

Probably the toughest race of the day to round out the quaddie but will lean towards (11) Gravina. Was good fresh running on nicely behind a smart winner. Steps up to 1200m now and generally performs well with a run under the belt.

(6) Kobe Rocks is an interesting runner who lines up for his second Australian start. Was last seen winning on his local debut at Kembla Grange and has been trialling very well around some smart horses.

(10) Born A Warrior fought on for 2nd last start and should improve off that run. Only the one career win but his best can win.

(5) Instant Attraction was competitive in some strong races last and has been trialling well in the lead up to this. Does normally need a run under the belt though.

Billy has been an avid racing fan ever since he and a few mates started a punters club once they turned 18. Following the initial punters clubs, he was properly hooked after landing a nice collect on Admire Rakti in the 2014 Caulfield Cup and has had a soft spot for Japanese horses ever since. Is a massive fan of 'blinkers first time' and has been known to enjoy a 'Hail Mary' multi. Loves punting across metro Sydney and Melbourne every Saturday but isn't scared to venture West late in the day to find a Pikey special.
