The race favourite (2) Torrens won pretty easily last start and there is nothing to suggest he won’t make it two in a row. He measures up to the same distance and grade as last start, gets a slight bump in weight for his efforts, but finds a Soft track and Luke Dittman stays on. The 2200 metres was well within his grasp last time, and he has been pretty consistent in this grade.

The runner-up in that previous start was (1) Romakash who meets him here again today. That was a surprise second place in my view, but he was third up (and in his defense, he normally takes some time). The veteran goes okay on Soft ground but does have a 0 from 7 record at this track. I can’t see him turning the tables despite the weight differential.

The threats look to be the low-weight runners (6) Urbino and (4) Baritone who have been pretty consistent this preparation. Baritone was also in the race Torrens won, where he arrived fourth.

At the risk of being repetitive, going with Luke Dittman here on (1) Mangione. The Waller trained Gelding has never won first-up, but he does come to form quickly, so we can expect him to show some generous improvement here. There is quite a bit of speed in this race, so there is also a good chance a few might overdo it, and Mangione could be the one to take advantage. The gate is a little sticky, so he’ll need some luck.

His main danger looks to be (2) Mount Tabora who is frustratingly inconsistent, but he has been showing a little bit more in his last couple of starts. He gets a wide gate, which is not ideal. The fact that it has been quite a while since his last win—I am willing to risk him. Outside of the top two chances, it’s a total dart job.

Pretty keen on the chances of (1) Brabham here. He has the services of Nash Rawiller and has shown some quality this preparation. He started with a maiden win by almost 7 lengths, and then came second in two consecutive races. The latest run was over 1400 metres, where he was ahead but faded towards the line. He should be maintaining his fitness here, and the slight drop back in distance is a plus. The worry is the gate—hoping he doesn’t work too hard to get across into a nice spot (but could find himself one out one back).

(6) Our Fraulein drops back in grade and can be competitive, while (4) Sweeping The Board is the one at odds. The complete knock-out hope is (3) Grade Challenge which just seems overs at $71.

Happy to stick with the favourite here (1) Roman Aureus over the likes of (6) Lubuk and (2) Snowzone. He drops back in grade after a second place behind Stampe in a CL6. He is 2 from 2 on Soft, and has a pretty convincing record at this track (5. 3w 2p). He gets a friendly draw that could help save some energy but he will need some luck to get out when they sprint home.

Lubuk is another Waller runner who you cannot ignore. He put together a few average runs, and then popped up to take a last start win (standard Waller). But he could make it two in a row.

Snowzone is just super consistent so include in your exotics.

The Horse

The Horse found the thought of placing bets and drinking beers much more appealing once he was married, and that led to an interest in the many intricacies of The Great Game. He enjoys the challenge of predicting what will happen in any given race, but also loves horses themselves, none more so than the mighty mudlark Jungle Edge. His focus lies on metropolitan racing in Victoria and NSW, however isn’t afraid to find one out wide. Away from racing, The Horse is an avid drummer – quite a difficult task with a set of hooves.
