Thursday racing comes to Eagle Farm with an eight-race card. The BM70 Handicap looks to be the highlight on the program. The Horse has reviewed Race 1, Race 3, Race 4 and Race 7 and brings us his best bets of the day.

This is a nice little race to open proceedings. The favourite (3) Boyles has been a picture of consistency of late, with 2 wins and 2 places this preparation. Last race he won nicely at Randwick on a Heavy track.

Two starts back he was second to (2) Northern Knight who completely spaced him by over 5 lengths. They took different paths but meet again today. Northern Knight drops back in grade after racing against tougher company last start. For me, Northern Knight should be the favourite, so considering this race looks to be between the two, I am leaning towards the better valued runner.

One of the better bets on the program is (5) Scottish Mist who drops down in grade and goes well on Good tracks – course and distance she is 1 from 1. She draws a wider gate but has the speed on her immediate inside, so it’s not too sticky. The price is starting to get thin, but happy to take it.

The 7 year old (3) Macs Girl is racing in handy form, and at odds, is the blow-out hope. This is a tougher test, but she is a consistent hard-trying nag. (7) Hallowed Girl goes well, but doesn’t traditionally fire fresh.

This is an open race and there’s one at value worth a spec. (11) Kittykittybangbang has had one start and placed 4^th. She came from 11^th in running to get that position and was closing (despite some traffic) as well as the runner-up (10) Kaliya who is also contesting this one. She is $7.00 today while Kittykittybangbang is $19.00. At the each-way price she looks just as likely. She would have taken benefit from that run – in terms of fitness and experience, so she’s worth a crack.

(3) Bushido is going for three wins in a row after a couple of quality runs at Ipswich. On both occasions winning by a nice margin. He enjoys the Good going, and gets the nice 3kg claim of apprentice Sheridan Tomlinson. There are a couple of queries, including the step up in grade, and the wide gate which might force him to work hard early on. But he is racing well, and with even luck, he can be right in the mix.

If things don’t fall to his favour, the top weight (1) Voulait might be the one to gain the lead and set the pace. He won in a lower grade last start at this track of 1200 metres. And gets the additional weight. Can’t help but feel that if he gets an easy time of it, he could be tough to beat. And at $12.00 he looks like a sensible each-way bet.

The Horse

The Horse found the thought of placing bets and drinking beers much more appealing once he was married, and that led to an interest in the many intricacies of The Great Game. He enjoys the challenge of predicting what will happen in any given race, but also loves horses themselves, none more so than the mighty mudlark Jungle Edge. His focus lies on metropolitan racing in Victoria and NSW, however isn’t afraid to find one out wide. Away from racing, The Horse is an avid drummer – quite a difficult task with a set of hooves.
