This looks a nice race for (8) Palace Whisper after a solid second place behind I’m Thunderstruck at Caulfield. It looks the best form-line coming in—as she posted better comparable times than her opposition. For example, bettering (1) Awkward by around 2 seconds over the 1200 and 1 second over the last 600 metres. Given, they were at different tracks, but it gives us something to assess. It’s a similar story when comparing her times to (3) Ethekwini. In addition, she has shown improvement in each run, and she appears to be hitting her mark. Damian Lane stays aboard, which is also a good lead.

The short priced favourite (3) First Mate has had plenty of early support. He was short in the market at his first start also, and despite being forced wide in running he showed some character to fight on for third. That said, the run wasn’t too taxing and he did not close on the leading two enough for me to agree he deserves to be $1.85 today. He is a risk at the price, so keen to take him on.

The Luke Oliver runner on the other hand, (9) Star Diva is paying $7.50 the win, and $2.05 the place. He jumped-out nice enough to suggest that he can be in the mix here first-up. He gets Mick Dee in the saddle, and gets the plum inside gate. When you consider he pays more for running third than the favourite will for winning, you know where my money is going!

(2) Clever Approach has been a money-muncher, but fortunately we haven’t been backing him (yet). He has 12 starts for 0 wins, but his last start was his best performance to date. Damian Lane stays in the saddle second-up, and he gets some more distance (which looks to be a positive). He looks well placed here in an average looking field, where he gets a nice draw. Outside of him, it’s tough to find another one, so happy to have him on top.

The maiden win of (6) Yulong Island was a nice performance, but he got nutted last start in a CL1 by Mosscon, who has been racing well. Jockey Ethan Brown was on him for that win and he takes back over today. Despite the wide draw he can come across and sit outside (5) In The Fast Lane (who also appears to be the biggest threat). The relative weight he is carrying shouldn’t be an issue; however there is a query on the distance. Stepping up from 1200 metres to 1300 metres will not solve the problem he has, which is getting run over late. Either way he looks to have this lot covered.

The Horse

The Horse found the thought of placing bets and drinking beers much more appealing once he was married, and that led to an interest in the many intricacies of The Great Game. He enjoys the challenge of predicting what will happen in any given race, but also loves horses themselves, none more so than the mighty mudlark Jungle Edge. His focus lies on metropolitan racing in Victoria and NSW, however isn’t afraid to find one out wide. Away from racing, The Horse is an avid drummer – quite a difficult task with a set of hooves.
